  • Thessalonike was the sister of Alexander the Great, and her myth tells how she turned into a mermaid after her brother's death. It's said that she would ask sailors if Alexander still reigned. The correct answer, "He reigns and conquers," would calm the sea; any other answer would provoke storms.

    Here in Greece the tradition dictates even the words u must respond with to the Mermaid if u want to live. "Is King Alexander still alive?" u always say "He is alive, he reigns and conquers the world".

      There is also a medieval legend about Alexander telling that once he got in a 'batiscaf', a kind of subarine that is lowered down the waters, to explore the deep of the ocean.

    To clarify things very well.
    Ichthyocentaurs have two equine legs and one/two serpentine tail/tails, Tritons and Nereids have two serpentine tails, Sirens/Mermaids (winged), Lamias and Gorgons have one serpentine tail.

      The legend goes that Olympias (the mother of Alexander the Great) was seen in bed with a large snake that was believed to be Zeus-Ammon (the syncretic fusion of the Greek God Zeus and the Egyptian God Ammon). Olympias raised her son to believe this was true

    • @russergee49
      @russergee49 15 дней назад +3

      No, *sirens* are half bird half human. Mermaids are not sirens in Greek stories or in the Greek language. Maybe in other European languages people use ‘siren’ for mermaids, but this is not true for Greek.

    • @wildmen5025
      @wildmen5025 15 дней назад +1

      Sirens are what you are thinking of. They got conflated with mermaids. The nymphs of the sea such as the Haliai and the Nereides are the Greek equivalent to mermaids and They are women that reside within the sea. I don't know if They are ever depicted with fish features but They are often in the company of sea creatures

      @@russergee49 wrong! Mermaids appear in the Odissey, that tell the story of Odisseus(Ulisses), king of the island of Itaca, going back home aftet the war of Troy, where he devised the trojan horse gambit to win the war. In a part of the story Odisseus goes to an island where the sorceress Cersi lives and she advises him to make his crew put bee wax on the ears not to hear the mermaid's singing and tie him to the mast of the ship without bee wax on the ears, so he could hear their song and not throw himself from the ship. This way the mermaids would have to throw themselves on the sea and die. The creatures half fish half human in greek mythology are called tritons and are part of the court of the god/king of the seas Poseidon(Neptune)
      Read the Odissey...

      @russergee49 15 дней назад +1

      @@andredfreitas6909 I’ve read that part, and the word used in Greek is ‘siren’, not mermaid. Also, I don’t care if in your language they use the same word for mermaid and siren, the Odyssey is written in Greek and in Greek they are not the same thing. Also, they are never described in the Odyssey, so Homer did not write they had fish tails. We know what they look like from other Ancient Greek art, which shows them as bird ladies.

    • @andredfreitas6909
