My word, that is an absolutely superb cover version, wow. It's a song I've heard plenty of times before but hearing this version just totally changed the way I saw the song, wow.
Well, his voice is at least special... Many say that it's Bowiesque, but to me, they sing quite differently (I'm a Bowie fan too). Bowie is much "stingier" with that screechy stuff... Brett adds/added (he's lost it recently) it everywhere. And I love it.
With Bett's interpretation, the song has a much more serious underlying message, funny the realism. Almost sad how a male's rendition seems to call one's attention in a different way... I don't know. I'm a woman, perhaps that's why one reads into the message differently depending on one's sex. My Brett has me in his pocket. Even a cover one is forced to read into without thinking...
Chrissy Hynde, herself, rewrites lyrics of cover songs to fashion an interpretation more relevant to her own circumstances, so your point really has no merit. If reinterpreters want to excise some of the more Ohio-centric aspect of the lyrics, to make it more personally relevant, so be it.
Brett, I -for one- do not love you (considering I don't even know you). But the public loves S u e d e (this period in particular) so let's stop the nonsense, reunite and do "Heroine" & "He's Dead" fer old times sake, ok luv?

Chrissie is being coy.....although this version is slower and very wonderful, no one can bring me to my knees the way Chrissie's voice does.

If I were young enough to go to Idol, I would sing this song.
It would not work :D
Huh? Had a bad day?

Poor boy...
i geuss we're supposed to think that he's showing us vulnerability.... in fact, he's showing us that his range is limited as all fuck.
Uh, it would help if he knew the correct lyrics.
Brilliant. You're slating a 'limey' for not knowing how to sing a Pretenders song. And people say Americans don't understand irony!
what...the hell?
