I've always wondered what the difference was. Next shot I pull, I'll have to try it long black style. I just love your channel, Hoon! I'm learning SO much. Thank you.
Very interesting....I live in Australia but was visiting New York a couple of years ago. I went into a coffee shop and was approached by a tall African American waiter. He said ....what would you like sir? I replied .....I’ll have a long black. Well the guy jumped back and said.....you can’t talk like that here. I realized what had happened and explained to him that I was from Australia and that’s what we called coffee without milk. I added ....it’s ok, we have flat whites as well....we use steam rollers ! With that he cracked a big smile, gave me a high five and said....My man!
Todd T You’re telling me Tod! As I said it and at the same time that I saw his reaction I thought....OMG how am I going to get out of this one. Luckily even though I’m 75 I can still think on my feet. Luckily my “flat white” gag came instantly to mind and he seemed to enjoy it. A flat white is what we call a long black with milk....not a cappuccino or latte.
@@vickersonp I enjoy flat whites, and I'm not white so I have to watch myself if the server is of a certain sex and background. Then again, that might turn out better than I thought...
Thanks for the shoutout Hoon! In about 5 more days that coffee should be sooooo much better. Make sure and save some then and see if there is a difference :) keep up the great content!
Hi Brent, so far I’ve used Lavazza Super Crema & Rossa beans and they’re just too bitter for me for a straight espresso. What would you recommend from ur shop that’s more on the milder Colombian flavor but not oily and bright. I really love Illy coffee but it’s too expensive especially when u waste so many beans experimenting. Thx.
Nelly right now our Colombian at a medium roast and our Guatemalan would fit that best. The Colombian is a lot less bright at a medium roast and the Guatemalan is very juicy. Both would be great And we rarely have oils on our beans as we tend to not roast that dark like the companies you listed. Roasting that dark usually causes the bitterness (or roast flavors) you describe. Also if you want $3 off use the code “youtube” at checkout for you first purchase. anything else just let me know.
I usually do long black but pull the shot right on top of the water without the separate cup. Gets a nice thick crema on top and looks beautiful! If you make it in a clear glass it’s really fun to see it blend together as the shot pulls.
Here in New Zealand the long blacks use a double shot of espresso and has less water than an Americano. It's quickly become my favourite drink and helped me cut down on drinking too much milk with all the flat whites I was drinking. I think being weaker than an espresso helps me enjoy the flavours more without being overwhelmed
Must try thanks Hoon. Long black sound interesting, thanks for tip too Sam. Good coffee is like single Malt whisky, the more you drink, the more you will appreciate all the notes. All that said Im loving cortado too.
I was under the impression an Americano was a double plus xx amount of hot water. A long black was a double shot left to run a lot longer than normal, so therefore getting more solids out of the shot, then made up with hot water. If you made your drinks with the same amount of water, they should have tasted the same.
@@HoonsCoffee Hmmmm I don't think I explained myself well. What I was trying to say was in your title you say Americano vs Long Black, like you're comparing 2 different drinks. When in fact you made the same drink twice
In Switzerland the coffee brewed longer on a espresso machine with a coarser grind is called Cafe Creme. In Germany too. At least that is what I grew up calling it.
Americano, long black ? New to in home espresso (also with my Breville Barista Express). All I know, Hoon, is the more I get into espresso, the less I use milk. Just adding hot water to really get that coffee flavor!!!

Well that could have gone the other way quickly...

Brent Goodale Thanks so much for the guidance. I’ll pick one of them.

I'm impressed by your passion for creating good coffee, even more impressed how you keep your teeth white after all these espressos :)
It is really fun and enjoyable. I used to drink coffee to wake me up in the morning but now I'm searching for a perfect cup of coffee.
@@HoonsCoffee That's funny, I wake up to have coffee!

I prefer long black myself as well.

I know. I have been enjoying the different types of coffee. There are so many coffees out there!
I'm wondering why you don't use the hot water option from the machine?
I usually do but looks much better with using hot kettle on the video!
I wondered how many grind setting on your machine?
This one has 16 settings outside and internal additional 10 settings.

I want to smell that coffee so bad!
I think someone was pulling your leg. They are the same. The order you pour makes no diff.
I know!
Of course, americano is better. Why not? Songsengnim, you are good barista.
Maybe "home barista"!
Americano is my go to drink.

I know. I really like latte in the beginning now I really enjoyed the americano and espresso lately.
It’s all nicely done and stuff man but please stop saying EXpresso 😑
