  • As everyone else is uploading 'What I did in my shed/garden/kitchen during the Lockdown' videos, I thought I'd make this, which is basically about the idea that the guitar is a friend for life, including during hard times. Well it is. There are happy and sad memories stored in a guitar, even a new guitar when you use it to play good old old songs.
Parts of 31 great songs from my life story, playing is not perfect but the songs are all great. See how many you recognise, and see if you can guess which bands I saw live (6 in all).
PS for those who may be interested, the guitar is a made in Mexico Fender Telecaster with a replacement neck (very thick) original pickups middle setting and the amplifier is not the Vox you can see but a Fender super Champ XD on a medium setting.

These songs could all be, and have been, played better, but as Martin Carthy says, 'The worst thing you can do to a song is not sing it.'
    1) You ain't goin' nowhere (Dylan, by The Byrds),
    2) Apache (Shadows-saw live once),
    3) You can close your eyes (James Taylor) reminds me of a young lady I once knew
    4) Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring (FJ S Bach),
    5) Throw down the sword (Wishbone Ash, seen live many times)
    6) Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix)
    7) Shendandoah (traditional American folk song)
8/9) Interstellar Overdrive, and Astronomy Domine (Pink Floyd, saw them twice, at Hyde Park and Earl's Court)
    10) Day Tripper (Beatles)
    11) The Wind Cries Mary (Jimi Hendrix)
    12) Whisky in the Jar (traditional Irish-Dubliners and Thin Lizzy etc)
    13) Yakety Axe (apologies for poor rendition)
    14) Ghost Riders in the Sky (Various)
    15) Fire and Rain (James Taylor)
    16) One Tree Hill (U2) never seen U2, but I have seen One Tree Hill-it's in Auckland, New Zealand,
    17) Wonderful Land (Shadows)
    18) Crazy Man Michael (Richard Thompson/Fairport Convention (seen live several times between 1973 and 2021)
    19) Rambling Man (Allman Brothers Band (saw live at Knebworth 1973),
20 Lazy Sunday Afternoon (Small Faces)
    21) Desperado (Eagles, saw live supporting Neil Young at Royal Festival Hall, London, in 1973 before they were famous,
    22) 1983 A Merman I should Turn to Be (Hendrix)
    23) Message in a bottle (The Police)
    24) Summer Song (Joe Satriani seen live about 8 times)
    25) Touch of Grey (Grateful Dead)
    26) Jack Straw (Grateful Dead) I nearly saw the Dead at Wembley in London around 1972, one of the great 'might have beens'
    27) Song for Guy (Elton John)
    28) The Burning of the Midnight Lamp (anyone would get the impression that I was a big Jimi Hendrix fan)
    29) Walk away Rene (Four Tops)
    30) Dock of the Bay (Otis Redding)
    31) You've Got a Friend (Carole King, popularised by James Taylor, also taught me by a young lady I knew in the long long ago........
    The guitar is your friend.
