      @B1RDSEYE 4 года назад +66

      akshay de why is that an issue? The whole point of these men is that they are ideals. It’s not saying that if you don’t reach the level of those men that you yourself have failed as a man. It’s saying that what these men have, who these men are is desirable.

    • @terrythompson7535
      @terrythompson7535 4 года назад +81

      The real issue is that we are told that we are allies, and that we are all in this life together and that we should collaborate, when the actual truth is that everyone is in it for themselves, and it is a competition. To the victor goes the spoils, and VAE VICTIS. What people are actually upset about is that they have been deceived, and haven't been prepared for the competition. By the time they realize this, they have no recourse because they are so far back that it is impossible to cross the finish line anything other than last.

    As a man, I've never looked to ads and compared myself to them. To be honest, I skip and block all the ads I can because they're just annoying and overly-fake.
    I may be alone in this but do other men also feel like it's a non-issue to see muscular men in commercials? When I see them, I don't feel bad for not looking like them. If anything, it's a reminder to keep going to the gym and progressing in my own life. There's a feeling I get inside me that says "You should be strong enough to get here or not have this effect you mentally and if you're not and cannot, too bad." Am I alone here?

      You're not alone. I think most men do one of two things. They either ignore the ads, or like yourself (and I include myself as well) see them as motivation to keep going to the gym and progress in their life as you put it. The difference between these ads and the female equivalent is that most men don't care about the images they see.

    The irony... advertisements are becoming so "woke" (sorry horrid word), yet social media regardless of advertising trends is enforcing shallower pressures on young men (and women) more than ever before. The media can change its ways, but its getting worse and worse within society. I can see it at first hand, I live in Bali which is now a hotspot for tourists coming for the "instagram" life, from their food, their hotel, their nightlife, their tan, their body, what was a surftown has evolved into a yoga/hipster town with girls posting pics like crazy to what is now an out of control "fitness mania" town, similar to a place like Tulum in Mexico. It is not reality, but people are coming here to take a piece of it to try and portray it as "their reality" and that is very worrying indeed. The acts of men in the gym are a clear signal of the problem, the sheer number of phones out filming their workout for posting later, or spending ages in front of a mirror to get the right light and pose so they can impress their "friends"... it looks like pure emotional torture... and you are worried that an old Lynx ad with girls running after a guy was a bad thing...

    Ultimately, it doesn't differ from women in that the goal is the same - instill an image in people's minds that makes them feel as insecure as possible, because people being content with themselves doesn't compel them to value "self-improvement," and they won't go anywhere or buy anything if that's the case. Men are perhaps just simpler to target.

    • @PeteS_1994
      @PeteS_1994 4 года назад +1

      Can you be somewhat comfortable with what you are but still want better? I think the ideal is to be accepting of reality but still be aware that it can be better so you still work for improvement. From experience, insecurity may lead you to try your hardest but it also causes you to hide your insecurities so some root insecurities go unaddressed and become worse.

    • @QuizHub
      @QuizHub 4 года назад +2

      @@PeteS_1994 You can absolutely be comfortable with yourself and still want better, as we appear to be hard-wired to strive for self-improvement. The key distinction is to find a path of self-improvement that you find fulfilling, whilst companies and society would have it that you're reaching for an elusive mountain peak that represents perfection. That peak is fictitious, and a better metaphor for life is to simply nurture your own path because it's both unique to you and open to a world of possibilities, which grabbing for the same thing as everybody else certainly isn't.

      lisanya23 Of course I meant “girls” as the opposite of “guys”, whitout any reference to age. Any other interpretation is plainly ludicrous or a wilful demonstration of stupidity, for it considers such issue as relevant in a way the video in question simply doesn’t, as it purported to take masculinity as an indefinite identity formed along one’s life. What I wanted to state was simply that it is quite beside the point to analyse the tendencies of masculinity only as a self-induced condition, regardless of its perspective as an answer to what is expected from males - whether “boys” or “men”. Mind the fact that I’m not using any alias, but my real name, and obviously don’t hide behind any social media masks whatsoever. As for the ridiculous gender issue aroused elsewhere, if there shouldn’t be any concerns about labels then of course any videos about “masculinity” would be pointless by definition - as much as any comments over what men think about themselves. As to pedophilia, It’s a blatant felony to be sorted out by courts - for those that see it in a word like “girls”, in the comtext of a simple phrase like the one I wrote above, I suggest a psychiatrist...

      DarthYuYevon That’s the interesting thing that most people don’t understand about rational argumentation, particularly when it comes to gender: you have a static perspective and a dynamic one, as you consider gender to be established by nature, as a metaphysical entity or according to socially and historically developed patterns. Of course you’ll fall into contradiction pitfalls if you mix both, as much as you will see contradictions where there are nome. Is it possible to have any discussion at all about gender stereorypes? If it is, obviously you can’t take any statements containing words like “men”, “woman”, “male”, “female”, etc, as an index to preconceived ideas without analysing the context and the background involved. Unfortunately that’s exactly what the exacerbation of the idea behind micro-messaging has created: a macro-stupidity unworthy of the pragmatic philosophy tradition...

And while you use the phone it is too easy to be distracted by the rest of the screen while the watch will always be in your face if you use it on your dominant hand. It is too easy to lose whole blocks of time, and enabling yourself to notice the passage of time is super helpful to catch yourself from losing too much in one go. You get more of a chance to catch yourself.

This video is going to be great material to show my clients and students. The Lynx case-study is particularly good. I worked on some of the brand's original campaigns and back then, they wanted to be seen as politically incorrect. Their audience were seemingly OK with this and the brand was rewarded in sales. Nowadays, consumers would think twice about spending money with a brand that is happy to cause offence purely for marketing gain. As consumers, we're a bit more aware about the impact of messages and how certain groups of society can be belittled or excluded unnecessarily (in this case, women / gay men).

    Loved this episode. Good range of interviews and absolutely, it's almost incredible how far women's advertising has moved on compared to male advertising. I think any male targeted adverts addressing the issue get attacked for being too "woke" and at times that's true. But the reality is, when Dove or whoever first started talking about "all women", not just skinny models, they were attacked too for glamorising obesity and attacks like that. But today, womens' adverts are closer to a healthy balance as a result. Men need those pioneering adverts. Also, damn I'd never have thought 14 year old guys would be looking at famous guys and thinking about the need for plastic surgery and tying it in with money/success. The watches adverts and the portrayal of men in most, as smouldering, solo, stare off into the distance type guys is crazy prevalent. I really don't know what to think of it... Like, I'm introverted and there's probably some part of me who idolises or wants to portray myself like that, or to be seen that way - but I'm now struggling to understand if i'm doing that because of who I am or who I want to be seen as and has advertising driven that self identity.

    Success for men is about accomplishing great things. The money, the respect, the women, may come as a result of that. But all of the men we admire, regardless of their occupation, have accomplished great things. And in order to do that you have to have a certain attitude of not letting anyone step over you, that doesn’t mean to be rude, but to respect yourself.

    I'm glad they've made this video
    People always complain about women being told to be size zero models by magazines. That are ironically made by gay men and women, even though its straight mens fault
    But adverts for men expect you to be Chris Hemsworth or Terry Cruise...

    They say advertising created this problem so they should solve it. These companies are doing it because it works. The key question is why does it work.

    • @theQuestion626
      @theQuestion626 4 года назад

      How exactly does it work…? Because it sells clothing? Sells cologne and cars and even firearms? Just because it sells a product doesn’t mean that it’s effective at addressing sociological or anthropological problems or even producing solutions to the problems they exacerbate.

      @@JustAboutToEat because it appeals to an imaginary archetype that human beings seek to conform to. Much like children who want to either be superheroes or Disney princesses or something or other. It’s a fiction. A fantasy. It has no more substance than smoke.

    I mean I started working out and eating well three years ago...and the results in women's attention is incredibly noticeable. So it's not really false advertising...women notice.
