    I'm Tunisian and I could never get over my love for Sumeru and the goosebumps I get whenever I see my own cultural representations in it or listen to the osts. I am still as excited about it as the moment I've heard/seen the teaser for the first time. I am so in love with this nation not just as a Tunisian, but also as a North African, Arab with Amazigh origins. thank you hoyoverse.

    I think sumeru will be my favorite for a long time. Walking through it as an Egyptian really made me feel at home (yeah even the forest area) there is even an NPC that has my name (Maryam)
    People keep mentioning how the representation is bad bc of the small number of black people but... Idk how to tell them that most of Egypt (right now at least) either has light skin or is tanned. There are black people but I don't encounter them as much as the other two. I myself have light skin that leans on the yellow side. And my brother and sister has skin similar to Cyno.
    Cyno (especially him), Dehya, and Candace's skin is the right shade of tan if you look at the people here, also their design is very sick (I literally thought Candace was gonna be 5 star), I didn't really feel offended when I saw the characters or felt any misrepresentation (although, in my opinion, I don't think they own anyone representation tbh, it's their fantasy world mixed with reality after all. they can talk about Dori all you want, if someone actually thinks people in middle east are scammers based on one character, then uuuh, how old are you? lol.) and I know people are up in the arms about Sumeru bc they wanted more black/dark skin characters not bc they care about culture of the Middle East, who is heavily made fun and demonized in the west. (edit: coming to add that yup, the Cleopatra documentary was a sight to be hold lol. it proved me right.)
    I would have loved Sumeru even if it didn't include the dessert, it really made me feel at home and idk why 😂 (I don't walk in the forest or the desert every day so 😂)

    • @mybeaniebooz9601
      @mybeaniebooz9601 Год назад +8

      I dont think people's issue is the lack of "black people", and i think it has more to do with how coincidentally all of the worst playable characters happen to be dark skinned and how coincidentally most of the playables in sumeru are white despite the npc designs reflecting the skin tone diversity of the region. Of course, this is not really a coincidence since in China most people view dark skin as ugly or scary

    • @Mars_261
      @Mars_261 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@mybeaniebooz9601 Sorry for the late replay, I only saw this now, bc I was randomly scrolling. I don't know how true the 'black is ugly' view is when it comes to Genshin, they are willing to create stuff about Latin America in the future after all. I personally find it a closed-minded way of thinking that just bc it's said "that" about these people (Chinese) so all people like that (Chinese) are this too. the only game-changing characters from Sumeru are Nahida, Nilou, and Alhaitham. the others are good but aren't game-changing like them (Dori, Kaveh, Collei, etc.) but I have been playing with Cyno and he is amazing (even as a f2p) just slap good artifacts on him and he is golden (like most characters really). I personally didn't find him as bad as people made him out to be (idk about Dehya tho lol, and I tried Candance in the character test run and she isn't bad at all just very niche and isn't for everyone. my Kaeya is amazing as a support that carries me a lot and he do some amazing numbers. I don't like Xinyan really so I don't know much about her) there are many characters that are not that good and have light skin so...
      You keep coming back to that way of thinking that most people in these countries are on the darker side, believe me when I say that people here are tanned more than dark-skinned. meaning, a lot of people here are not even born with the tan, they gain it. You can walk in Egypt and find this guy who has his sleeves rolled up and there is a skin that is much much lighter there. My brother who has skin similar to Cyno is like this too, his wife and daughter are very light-skinned, her family is also white but the father and the brothers are tanned-skinned. my sister has olive skin and her husband has light skin (even he has a tan despite looking generally light). Not saying there aren't tanned or dark-skinned people at all, there are just more light-skinned people than you think.
      You are free to disagree but this is my take as an Egyptian, Arab, and North African, I didn't feel Genshin was disrespecting my people (especially by being 80% accurate about the things they added in Sumeru). they are making their fantasy world and mixing real life in it. and trust me when I tell you they will add more dark-skinned characters who are game-changing or meta, Sumeru or not. So don't feel discouraged. I saw a leak about a dark-skinned (or tanned. not sure) child character from the desert a few months ago. the amount of Sumeru characters are not that great anyway, look at Mondstad, Liyue, and Inazuma. Just wait and you will definitely have more characters like this.

    I love this series and cannot wait for the Indian/South Asian one. I love the detail of the Sumeru Desert seems to have a dried up 'Nile River', because if I am getting this right, then the Rainforest have a lot of river and it might be based on the Indus river valley which is considered the cradle of Indian civilization. (Modern day, it runs all the way from India through Pakistan and then back to India before it falls in the Arabian Sea.)
    Also, Indus is the Roman take of the Greek Indos which is taken from the Persian Hindus which refers to the river Sindhu which just means, river. India is 'land of Indus' to the Roman and Hindustani (land of the Hindus) to Middle East. It's funny that they are just talking about a river and Indians call India Bharat or Bharatvarsha or Vedics/Hinduism (which is likely a cultural combination of the Indo Aryans, the step people and the IRV civilization, this culture is seen alot in the Sumeru rainforest and the new map, especially in Rukkhadevata).
    Puspa Cafe is interesting, It have a Sanskrit name uses Middle Eastern wears and serves coffee that North African are famous for.
    Nahida is also full of Indian Religion, Symbol and terminology references.

      Natlan will actually be Latin America, so countries like Mexico, Guatemala, and Brazil.
      The name Natlan is an Aztec (native Mexican) word, and their archon is the archon of war, just like how the Aztecs worshiped the god of war huizilopochtli.
      They said Natlan will have a festival called carnival, which is based on the Carnival in Brazil and Caribbean. Some west African influence will be in Natlan too cuz the African slaves that were brought there from Nigeria and Benin also brought their beliefs.

    • @kaoru9829

      I wouldn't be surprised to see some reference to Australia, but I'm not gonna get my hopes up too much. Right now all we have is Collei's boomerang, if you can even count that lol. With genshin mixing a bunch of cultures in Sumeru, I expect that Natlan will be similar in that way. It would be nice to see some Indigenous Australian representation, I'd loooove to see some references to dreamtime stories. I believe Natlan is partially in the desert as well, and with all of the red sand we've seen in Sumeru it'd be a great opportunity to draw inspiration from Australia's outback.
      Also there may be a number of (somewhat) distinct tribes in Natlan? So maybe we'll see a tribe based on Indigenous Australian culture. But this is purely speculation on my part. We know basically nothing about Natlan at this point so who knows!!

    Sumeru desert is a land ruled by white people claiming (for the "elite") to be superior to the Desert tanned/dark-sinned and who use them as mercenaries and their lands as their personal trash bag...
    Also, during the story quest, a revolution against the oppressor started and allowed the desert people to be more respected and to keep their own culture without being oppressed or looked down anymore...
