I got a Barium enema today. When the doctor said "Now I'm going to blow some air in your rectum to enlarge it" I guarantee you, one of the most painfull thing I've ever endure. Felt like I was getting rammed by a horse for like 5 seconds......
Because barium enema are supose to be fun? What am i suppose to say? Comment and say "it's really not bad at all, you won't feel anything". people that get cancer and go through Chemo don't say to other people "Chemo is not bad at all". I'm not trying to compare my experience with someone that is affected with cancer it would be stupid, I'm just saying gthe truth. Barium enema is a painfull, but necessary experience.
Also, if someone can be badly influenced by a comment on youtube, they got a problem....

I had one about 2 hours ago. All my worries of it being painful were alleviated, it was simply a mild discomfort, .. the whole thing took literally 10- 12 minutes. Probably the worst thing was not being able to eat ANYTHING the day before, .. but if you take your mind off food it wasn't really a problem for me. Feel free to send me a PM if there's anything else you need to know.
PS:( i get my results in 2 weeks.. fingers crossed they'll find nothing.)

This procedure helped me out with my diverticulitis. Went in for lower left abdominal pain. And when the procedure was over the pain was gone instantly. Strange. Now the pain is back.

@@starman9933 Well it’s different for everyone. I’m a super skinny guy so it made my stomach grow tremendously which is what caused the pain. The bigger you are the less it’ll hurt.

They made me drink barium. It was white, extremely thick which made it hard to swallow and it tasted like plaster and smelled like something not meant to go in your mouth. A total nightmare.

i remember having this humiliation once. they didn't let the thing flow, they fucking used a pump. i was one of the most horrendous feelings you could ever have. and at the end of it the left over barium clogged up my colon and made it million times worse. the thing is i didn't knew that was the case until 3 days later i had to have a colonoscopy and when they gave that salt to mix with water to clean up the colon, i felt constipation instead of diarrhea and i felt the pressure build up until it finally a golf ball sized clump of shit shot out like a cannon, that fucking barium was clogging an already fucked up colon. if you think what you reading is bad, imagine going through that shit

had surgery on Oct 18th. (I had two surgeries before, I knew about not eating). Then on the 17th, I was told at 2pm that my surgery had to be pushed back, someone was bleeding badly. I broke down since I had prepared for surgery. Good thing I fasted after midnight on the 17th. . . . my surgeon called me 6am Oct 18th "don't eat, you can have surgery today the 18th!". was NPO for a total of 33 hours. No food from Thursday Oct 18th 1am to Oct 19th 10am, only ice chips after surgery That was hard!

For some patients, urgency of diagnosing could be difference between life and death/severe complications; therefore such risks are taken.
Frankly, barium is becoming a thing of the past. Endoscopy/Colonscopy is more accurate, confirmative, and way less risky.
Barium is, without question, on a par with arsenic as a deadly toxin.
Barium sulfate is inert and not absorbed in the GI tract. It is a harmless radiopaque contrast that is used hundreds of times every day in diagnostic imaging... 🤣
I think it depends on the person because during this exam it hurt so bad for me I don’t even know how to describe it.

since this is a lower GI series and you had to have stuff up in you, did you feel like you had to go to the bathroom during the procedure???? Did you have to "hold it in"?

What is a boiled sweet, sweet what?
Yes. The white liquid is a mixture of barium sulfate powder and water. When you poop after having a barium swallow or barium enema procedure, your poop is a mass of dried out and compacted barium sulfate powder. Barium is a very heavy element. That's why they use it for this! It blocks x-rays and makes the colon visible in the images. :) Usually a laxative is recommended afterward to get that barium sulfate out asap so that it isn't dried out and hardened by the colon. It is very constipating if it is left inside and allowed to dry out like that.
unexplained bleeding happens to me on my skin. it just appears out of no where. it happens sometimes.

The procedure was horrendous. Nearly passed out at 1 part as i was full of gas and they was getting me to leave forward standing up and the pressure was to much(this was to take xrays at different angles) cant fault the staff they were brilliant throughout. After the procedure was sat in loo for over half an hour though lol
The also inflate your colon with air. Since I have an ileostomy for 18 months the inflation part was extremely painful.

!!!!!!!WARNING!!!!!!! Yo watch out with holding it in.(10?-15-30min). Im experiencing signs of DIVERTICULITIS but have stabilized with some penicillin like pill (amoxcillin, dixtocillin?), probiotics, chamomile tea 3 bags in a big mug. Baby steps might be best. I feel like I should go to the doctor now. But am feeling a little better... Be careful with all these natural things.
Since surgery I have this constant feeling of fullness in my pelvis (Lower GI) and I am hoping it is just due to having a laparoscopic surgery to remove my ovary. But it has been over 4 weeks now and I still feel full all the time? I want to get a colonoscopy since I want to make sure I don't have anything up there but then I heard about this and thought it may be less invasive. It's good to know that you were not in a LOT of pain. . .and only not having food was an issue.

We went to a new doctor and he said that I have appendicitis.
PRO PRO TIP: The dude who will stick that tube up your butt hole might keep on yapping about elderly patients taking the exam and how troublesome it is to clean up after messing up on the clenching part.

The procedure is pretty standardized, though a doctor may want the radiology technician to focus on a specific anatomical area and take images at certain positions or angles showing that area. Generally though, there's a standard set of images and positions. X-ray energy levels are adjusted to get correct penetration of soft tissue and a clear image of the barium bolus.

I did a Barium "meal" some years ago to diagnose my appendix. I was simply asked to drink a huge glass of the barium concoction, wait for about 30 mins or so and then go x-rayed. frankly, that makes more sense to me than this video. It seems unnecessarily complicated, uncomfortable and messy.
Barium swallows are best for the upper GI tract. Barium enemas are better for the lower GI tract. If you just want to image the rectum, sigmoid, and colon up to the splenic flexure, it makes no sense to ask the patient to drink a liter or 2 of barium sulfate and then wait 8+ hours for those areas to fill with the barium. An enema can be done and those areas can be filled completely within a few minutes and excellent images can be obtained. Plus, barium sulfate is disgusting. I'd much rather have it injected into my butt and through my colon than have to drink 1-2 liters of it and then wait around in a hospital for hours. I HAVE done the latter as a child at 7 years old, because my GI doc wanted a full esophagus to rectum imaging series. It was awful sitting in the lobby, nauseous as hell, being asked to go drink more and more every 30 minutes for the first 2 or 3 hours and getting x-rays done every hour along the way. One of the worst memories I have as a child. The 2 colonoscopies were also torturous, at least the prep stage of them was.
Rectum is a funny word. Isn't there an easier way than having to roll around on an xray table?

+Jibreel Ahmed ... The Barium Enema is a diagnostic procedure (or sometimes used as treatment) for lower GI studies. Basically if you're having GI problems this diagnostic test can help the doctor see what's going on. Or if there's a medical condition (e.g. intussusception) it can be used the correct it.

Prolapsd intestins cannot pass anything. Not fluid. And you swell and swell your body doesn't hurt yet. Lay on your back with slightly elivated uperbod if intestins are week like mine. & You have role around and put ur legs up & liquify inside your intestins. normal people have no probleming.
