Kahane has been the darling composer of my heart since I first read about the Craigslistlieder. His musical language is one of my favorites of any living composer. I’m so glad this concert finally got posted on RUclips.
I was on a high school field trip to NYC when I heard Gabriel Kahane's Crane Palimpsest in Carnegie Hall and I loved hearing his command over both classical and songwriting languages. I looked him up and found this tiny desk, and I've been wholeheartedly supporting his music ever since. I wasn't expecting to see this on my yt subscription feed, what a shock of nostalgia!
Such a unique way of songwriting.. each song feels like a mini musical. The way the melody and harmony swings between keys makes the song feel so fluid and dream like. Makes me listen to the music in a mindstate I rarely go to when normally listening to music. Interesting and beautiful experience. I'm not a musician, but I became intensely interested in the craft in this. I don't normally like close-up camera work either, but it worked here, it went with the close intimacy of the music.
A prayer for tomorrow today: "Heavenly Father. It is with most humble of heart that I ask this of you. The world's eyes are upon us. The United States of America. A land filled with the most diverse group of people on the planet. And we just can't seem to get along. Please put your loving arms around each and every one of us. Not individually, but together. Will your love upon us as a group. A group of people that will vote on our Country's leader today. No one really knows a man's heart except you dear Lord. And both of these men need your prayers. But today if you could, see to it that we as human beings are showered with love. And forgiveness. And thoughtfulness. Towards one another. Some will vote one way. Some will vote another. And even though not all believe in even You most heavenly God, may there also be acceptance. I personally have been witness to your miracles. I know they can happen. I've seen them! Your love is greater than all men put together, yet it's those men that need your love right now. Please grant them that. Give us all a humble heart today. I know you can prevail. Not showing off, but it feels like they cramped too many harmonic and melodic ideas into one song and it ended up sounding too unstable without building up a distinct atmosphere. I do feel all the ideas were good, just too much for one track.
I used to be obsessed with his piece - November in "Book of Travelers". Just so good.

Little Love is a beautiful song of his, along with his family story of escaping Germany in 1939 as a Jewish family running from the Nazis.

Music doesnt have to be "easy-listening" there are many more emotions to convey through music than just happiness or sadness
