- In this real-life example video, Tim explains the difference between Payload and Towing Capacity, and how the weight of the trailer can affect how much payload you have available to haul your passengers and gear. Does this Sequoia have what it takes to transport 6 adults and their stuff to the campsite while towing a full-size camper?

Forget about mansplaining, there was a lot of interrupting nagging in this video.
Boy you ain’t lying lol I stopped at 1:25 like ok she just explained his intro she’s going to do a whole lot of womensplaning after this point
Thank you! This is so helpful. I just bought an SUV with towing capacity and now I understand!
This is why I upgraded from a 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton. With full gas, trailer packed for camping and my wife and I in the truck, I only had 250# to spare. That being said I was 3500# under the towing capacity. Now I have 2980# payload and will never be close to my limit. Nice video Tim and Jill
Bring back the diesel Excursion
Great video! Payload is often overlooked. Most trucks will run out of payload before tow capacity.
Do not forget GCWR..gross combined weight. Let’s say you tow 5000 and your vehicle is loaded to 6500 which is 11500 BUT your GCWR is 11,000 it wont matter that you are within your vehicle and trailer GVWR. For example, my truck can tow 7650. My truck also has a GVWR of 6250. My GCWR is 12,800. If I totally took my truck up to its GVWR of 6250 all I have left for the trailer GVWR MAXIMUM is 6550. It does not matter that my max tow capacity is 7650 because if I did that I would be over 12,800. Also Gross axle is extremely important.
Yeah, there is WAY more to it, than what's in this video.
CDL!!!!!!
Kudos Jill for making this video happen! Large SUVs are great because you can tow OR haul. But they are not engineered to do both simultaneously. Something else to consider is trailer length. Large SUVs have shorter wheelbases than extended cab pickups and will be more susceptible to sway with some of the longer towable travel trailers out there. In my opinion you should stay under 26ft even with long SUVs like the Expedition Max or Suburban.
🙌
Best to take your vehicle to a scale to get an accurate weight to help with towing numbers. Never sure what fuel level is assumed in factory numbers.
Thank you for this video!! It's very clear and concise. I have spent two days watching over a dozen YT videos and read even more articles and forums trying to grasp the info you graciously provided in a clean format (the side typed info = yay!).
Nice effort clarifying a complex and poorly understood set of topics. I find it interesting to consider how stringent the towing standard is today (SAE J2807) compared to 10 years ago when each manufacturer simply had their own standard for determining tow capacity (and seemed to be creative with their calculations). Go back further and a 1986 K5 Blazer with a 185 hp 305 ci engine was asked to tow far beyond anything a similarly equipped vehicle would be rated to tow today. If you’ve not read the SAE J2807 standard, it’s a stringent set of requirements and might be interesting to research…. Thanks again for your informative approach.
I'm glad we checked payload. We were going to use our 08 Toyota Landcruiser to Tow a medium sized 23 ft airstream. the math works out with just my wife and me. But if we add our two teenage boys to the vehicle (another 400 lbs), we blow past the 1585 lbs payload capacity! So we are looking for something with over 1900 lbs of payload capacity. Good video!
This was helpful, thanks.
Very good explanation. Great job by both of you!
Thank you for the explanation
Great video!
Before this video I was clueless , after this video I am confident , thank you very much for pushing him Jill , definitely glad this video was made !
🙌
very helpful !
Very Good Explanation
This was great, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
VERY HELPFUL, WELL EXPLAINED
My daughter bought a SUV and said they want to get a trailer. I think they better study the size of the trailer first, then get the vehicle. Thanks for the video. Very nice.
🤯 Thanks for this!
This is discouraging 😕. No matter what vehicle I get, I'm basically screwed on everything that I want to put in or on it.
Great video. Would love to see you guys do an actual tow using the new 2022 Honda Ridgeline.
Here is some towing with a 2021 Ridgeline (only change in 2022 was a new paint color) - Mid-Size Truck or Crossover with a Bed? 2021 Honda Ridgeline AWD Sport

@@Pickuptrucktalk THANK YOU !
Great video, in the future you might also want to mention that a full tank of gas is also payload and adds up fast!
Sorry gas isn’t included in payload. That’s a myth.
@@Pickuptrucktalk I’m not following your statement. It implies you are saying the weight of a full tank of gas does not subtract from the payload. Is that what you mean?
I know that is NOT the case with airplanes. Fuel weight takes away from payload. This is why planes can carry more for short hopes, they carry less fuel!
@@SamCarleton correct. A full tank is included in the payload numbers.
This is a good statement on it.
“The curb weight of your truck is how much the vehicle weighs when empty. When determining maximum payload and towing capacity, you need to know the curb weight, which includes a full tank of gas and topped off fluids but no passengers or cargo. Your truck's mass constitutes part of the GVWR, as does the load you carry.”
Payload is what you carry above curb weight. Curb weight includes all fuel and fluids needed to run the vehicle. Fuel is not added towards your max payload. Hope this helps!
First the question - who’s Silvia? 😜. Seriously, we have a 2017 Acadia Limited that we tow a 3500 lb rated utility trailer once a year. I am guessing that total trailer weight is 2500-3000 lbs for this trip. This year, the Acadia, will be loaded probably 1400-1500 lbs. internally. I am trying to limit tongue weight by how I load the trailer. I know I will exceed maximum load.
I got a 2007 RAV4 -4cyl with all wheel drive capability. Can I tow a 3k lb civic si on a tow dolly?
I have Toyota Sienna 2018 AWD. Trying to buy right Camper , it is kind of confuse... I found out that Sienna Limited AWD can only tow 2000 pounds. If you want to tow 3500 have to add Towing Package,,,, They going to instal transmision cooller "thing" :) also I was asking about larger brakes but ... I called them (dealer) they said not offer it.... LOL My Q is do I need to get transmission cooler to tow camper weight around 2500 Ibs and my family weight around 500 lbs or not? I have not much other options... because most of campers weight more than 3500 lbs. Thanks
realistically The only safe option is to get a new tow vehicle.
Thanks for the video and visuals!! So basically I can't tow squat with my Nissan Pathfinder :( I do not like tent trailers at all so that's not an option and I cannot upgrade my vehicle so my long life dream of owning a trailer is gone :(
What’s the trim. Certain Nissan Pathfinders are rated between 3500-6000, so there are lightweight teardrop campers that fit in those specifications.
I’m 58 years old and always wanted a mobile home. For the first time l bought a SUV. 2012 Jeep Liberty in mint condition. This thing weighs 5,600 lbs.
It even have a tow hitch installed. I’m looking at 3,000 lbs for a 5th wheel. The vehicle is rated at 5,000 lbs max tow capacity.
Subscribed ✔️
Uh, your looking at towing a 5th wheel trailer with a Jeep Liberty?
5th wheel has a special truck bed hitch. Your liberty can tow a travel trailer, not a. 5th wheel. And 5th wheels are usually double axel very long and very heavy- more for a super duty truck.
I enjoyed the video and actually learned something. Way to go guys, thanks 😊
❤️❤️❤️
I read people saying the cargo weight limit listed doesn't include 150 lbs for a driver (nor gasoline in the car), is that true?
There are many videos on RUclips about payload and just looking at the sticker. I was really hoping for a more in depth engineering discussion about payload. We have all seen the million mile trucks and how beat up and abused those trucks were. Do you think they considered the payload? I would love to know what is setting the limits. Is it the suspension, bearings in the axle, or braking performance that set the limits?
While this video isn't specific to payload, this is probably the type of thing you're looking for : ruclips.net/video/iPhMnj1F-Lc/видео.html
Just out of curiosity. With the example given, can you add that 810lb of payload to the towing capacity?
You mean increase the towing capacity by that much? There's no way to improve payload or towing capacity numbers since that's based on the frame strength.
Still not sure I understand it but I was not fault you, but I was really captured by how much my guy was concerned about mansplaining 😂
There is now max towing rating on my 22 Yukon? Is this the same as GCWR?
Nope. GCWR and max towing are different things.
@@Pickuptrucktalk how do I determine max towing if not on sticker in drivers side door?
@@kevinr5187 it should have a Vin specific sticker on the cabin metal between the front and passenger door. Look for a silver sticker. It should list all the important towing stats.
@@Pickuptrucktalk Yes, I understand exactly the sticker you are referring to and the said sticker is present, however there is nothing that says MAX TOWING on that sticker. It must be different on GM products.
@@kevinr5187 it should list towing numbers by various hook ups like conventional towing, 5th wheel, etc… send me a pic to Tim@pickuptrucktalk.com. We will figure this out.
So payload is part of towing capacity , if towing capacity is 5000 and payload is 1000 you can't tow more than 4000 pounds ?
NEW RULE: No maths during summer vacation.
*EDIT* 4:40 See what I mean.😂
This is video editor Phil: Tim’s “close enough” math gave me a headache while editing this video.
@@Pickuptrucktalk 😂
I think this might have confused me if i already knew all this.
Excellent broadcast !
Also you can never have too many JILLS❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
Guys, I'm new to the USA and my English is bad. I've watched a bunch of videos, but I don't understand everything. Please tell me. I have found several campers that have a gross curb weight of between 5,000 and 5,300 pounds. I plan to load personal items etc in there and let's assume the weight is 6000 pounds. I am currently actively looking for a truck that can safely transport our family. And so, there are 4 of us and our total weight is 400 pounds. Plus personal belongings in the car worth 50 pounds (water, phones, small items, because I added the main cargo to the trailer). We plan to travel for about a month and a half a year. Now the family has a BMW X5 and would really like to replace it with a BMW X7 (pulls 8500 pounds), but I’m afraid that it’s risky to pull a trailer on it. I also look towards the Jeep Wagonner (pulls up to 10,000 pounds). If you have time, I will be very grateful. Tell me, are my calculations correct and is jeep suitable for these purposes? Thanks a lot!
I was told by two weight distribution hitch companies that you do NOT add the weight of WDH’s to your payload🤷♂️. Has to do with science or something😂
I would have called the company rep a dumbass and walked out.
thank you for the information. But the interruption in between the explanation is kind of annoying.
OK so my truck says 7000 towing the camper is 6200 lbs but my transmission is heating up to 250 what's really going on
Transmissions are designed to run higher temps. Temperatures in the 250 range are normal these days.
Not mine lol tore up the torque converter
A lot of Ram 1500’s have under 1000 lbs cargo capacity
its intresting to note some top level trim 1500 rams have less then a 1200 pound payload. Completely useless truck for towing.
you can get two more Jills is you only use a 1/4 tank of gas.
😂
I always thought the max towing capacity was more of a recommendation.
It did tow a space shuttle.
I think Jill should have been the one doing the video and Tim holding the video
The tongue weight increases as you go downhill.
New sequoia has 9k tow capacity which you state in the beginning then you do math with 7k?
Do the manufactures fudge the numbers down to compensate fools who overload?
I think yes, however, I have no proof.
How about letting him do the video and you operate the camera
The other number that needs to be considered is the gross combined vehicle weight rating of the tow vehicle. It’s possible to exceed that number while staying within the other numbers. It can all be confusing. I guess paying attention in math class is important after all. It may be a good idea to take your rig to a CAT scale and weigh it with the trailer loaded as normal to determine how much payload is left for the tow vehicle. Also check the owner’s manual or for a sticker on the hitch. The tow vehicle may be restricted to 5000# towing and 500# tongue weight without a weight distribution hitch. There are so many things to consider when towing!
Right. Just trying to simplify it and yup skipped a few things.
What scenario could GCWR be exceeded while staying within the other numbers?
Nice video, but only 1 person should do the video. The guy talking and her correcting, adding or talking over him was getting very annoying! lol Thanks for the info anyways!
Just let him talk jeez
These payload are a joke people should demand more out of the 100000$vehicles
Any large suv at least a minimum of 2000lb payload
Agree!
I’m sure they bring them down for DOT
@@chrisd5383 I'm sure but its need to be up there for legal purposes.
I don’t necessarily agree. If you have a need for X payload or towing, purchase a vehicle to accommodate that. I think shoppers just need to educate themselves a bit more and put their money towards what they prioritize.
@@ALMX5DP problems is no one offer an hd suv with a higher capacity I have trucks with the higher payloads but would love to have a suv that could take all my things and tow my travel trailer
I hate when 2 people are explaining something.
How dare him mansplain by sharing his knowledge 😫
I don’t see the point of buying a half ton. They’re just as big and expensive as a 3/4 ton but have the capacity of a mid size.
Could each person please speak one at a time?!!!
There is no such thing as man-splaining, just explaining. Don't let women tell you differently. Info is info. It shouldn't matter who is listening. Women wouldn't let you use the phrase "woman-splaining". ;)
I'm really disgusted, Tim, that you kept asking Jill if you were 'mansplaining'. First off, let's explore the accepted definition of mansplaining because you clearly have no idea what it is which makes you look a bit silly constantly being 'worried' if you're doing it or not; "the explanation of something by a man, typically to a woman, in a manner regarded as condescending or patronizing." Now that you know what the phrase means, do YOU feel that you were being condescending or patronizing in ANY way? OF COURSE NOT! The act of a Man (don't ask a crazy leftist liberal what a Man is for christ' sake), simply explaining or teaching a thing to a person cannot, should not, and hopefully won't ever be 'mansplaining'. So, stop 'worrying' about whether you're doing it or not, unless you're actually being a jerk, which by the way women can be a jerk as well. I'm so tired of hearing Men tiptoe around that stupid woke phrase! Great video btw.
So confused. Please make a script, practice, speak slowly, don’t babble over each other. Then redo this vid. I feel like you know your stuff but it did NOTcome out in this vid
No such thing as mansplaining since men make everything.
thanx for the mansplaining.. a simple explanation might sound condescending but sometimes that is exactly what folks are looking for. This one time i was with a customer at my old job and i didn't wanna mansplain her why she was incorrect about her understanding of an HVAC system. my former boss walked in the house, carefully listened to the complain and with the straightest face, the old man proceeded with his texan accent saying,
''ma'am.. let me show you how a thermostat works.. this thing right here is designed to signal your AC condensor outside and the blower motor in the closet to blow cooler-drier air out of these supply registers all while sucking warmer-damper air from this return register. now ma'am, no matter how hot it feels in the kitchen while you're cooking or what the current temperature is outside, the thermostat won't signal the system to kick in until the temperature of the air surrounding this thermostat goes above 87.4°F if you keep the desired temperature at 87°F like you do here. and ma'am it operates in this manner because it is only engineered to read the air temperature and only in this area''
5 mins later, she's happy and gave us a 5 star review.
Y’all, Mansplaining is when a woman correctly tells you how the thermostat works and then a man repeats what she just said as if she had been speaking gibberish and the other men in the room nod enthusiastically and give him kudos for explaining it. You think I’m joking but I swear I’ve seen this too many times.
