      If I had to pick one or the other, I'd go melodic, as a song that is dissonant all the time just gets irritating imo. However, adding a little bit of dissonance (a nice flat2 or flat5 riff in a riff) to a mostly melodic song resolves so nicely to the more melodic bits and stops the song sounding almost too 'nice' all of the time

    Overall, melodic stuff wins out for me, these days. Melody is just so important, and unfortunately also very overlooked in metal. Dissonance is cool to add spice, but when it's all out, it's just as having all parts at 10. At that point, it stops being exiting. Also, there's no reason why dissonant stuff can't have melody, either. Bands like Slayer were masters at this.

    • @willrichtor
      @willrichtor 2 года назад

      You're right, there IS no reason, because these two things aren't opposed. The correct comparison would be harmony vs dissonance. Like an Iron Maiden solo duel vs the intro to Lark's Tongues in Aspic. Dissonant music is rarely lacking in melody, and the pieces played here illustrate that pretty well.

    I am definitely a melodic type player but i do appreciate the Dissonant style stuff. The tone was sick.
    I've never really spent any time on a 7 string. It's an expensive experiment and i'm always too poor. 😂

    Dissonant into yet more dissonance luvlee jublee, followed by a few chugs, happy boy! Melodic or Dissonant we all won because we got a piece of what we love :)

    I add dissonance in my breakdowns/intros and melodic in the verses and chorus, so its more beautfull while singing and heavy while playing

    So many thousands of years of evolution and I end up liking the dissonant stuff.
    I honestly dislike melodic metal, most of It makes me cringe, but it depends very much on what the melody is.
    Also, the kind of rhythm and groove most melodic metal has, tends to be more boring for me.
    So after years of listening to music with more dissonance, the dissonant lines don't sound non-melodic or necessarily tense and the music that ends up using ( more ) dissonance and harmony as complementary tools sounds a lot more pleasant to me. At least when talking about metal music.

    Dissonant all day, but if I had to pick, I'd pick Astronoid's melodic metal.
