If I had to pick one or the other, I'd go melodic, as a song that is dissonant all the time just gets irritating imo. However, adding a little bit of dissonance (a nice flat2 or flat5 riff in a riff) to a mostly melodic song resolves so nicely to the more melodic bits and stops the song sounding almost too 'nice' all of the time
Awesome! I’ve been playing a lot more 6 string recently too, and for this video I made all the riffs at 150BPM which is a tempo I usually avoid kinda to see what riffs it inspires :)
@@peteplaysmusic Just bought me a dean mdx it's beautiful and plays like a drem and a fraction of price of A Gibson (hate Gibson Before really can't stand them after that )

first melodic riff sounds very similar to russian band "stigmata" september song also almost every melodic song had a small vibe of that band maybe because of b tuning, idk
@@Hardcore4pants I mean I’m glad the 12 year old so I could find a new band. I don’t speak any languages besides English and Spanish so I probably never would’ve found this band
Both of them mixed together in a song. That's greatness. The kick in the face we get when that melodic clean chorus ends and the this super heavy dissonant riff starts is priceless.
To me there's no winner... Metal can be melodic and dissonant in fair proportion. As my friend Thanos would say: "Perfectly balanced, as all things should be". Sick video Pete. Keep it up! 🤘🏻🔥
I love both styles of Metal especially when they are used together. You can't beat a solid anthemic track with a heavy breakdown. It makes the best boss music.
@@peteplaysmusic "All Alone" by Blind Witness (aka the "what the fuck is going OOONNNNN" song) is something that comes to mind. Brutal -core track with a really beautiful melodic solo section.
Transitioning between the 2 is more effective than either in a vacuum, beautiful melodic bridge -> disgusting breakdown or Dissonant build up -> melodic release are some of the best feelings in metal
Dissonance wins my heart every time hands down. Nothing wrong with some killer melody but when two or more waves interact to create additional tones there's magic to be found!
So good man. Such a riff monster. The new Rabea plugin is so good. I've got some absolutely filthy, growling, beastial tones out of it and the synth is too much fun.
I don’t think any style “won”. I think both melody and dissonance played off each other perfectly to make a beautifully heavy piece of metal. Killer job
Yeah...hard to choose a favorite. Both have their place depending on the song. I like the dissonant a bit over the melodic, but again it depends on the song. Great stuff, Pete. I look forward to your vids.
I’m a dissonant guy myself. My favorite metalcore band is Misery Signals because they blend melodic and dissonant guitar together masterfully. Nice video!
Overall, melodic stuff wins out for me, these days. Melody is just so important, and unfortunately also very overlooked in metal. Dissonance is cool to add spice, but when it's all out, it's just as having all parts at 10. At that point, it stops being exiting. Also, there's no reason why dissonant stuff can't have melody, either. Bands like Slayer were masters at this.
You're right, there IS no reason, because these two things aren't opposed. The correct comparison would be harmony vs dissonance. Like an Iron Maiden solo duel vs the intro to Lark's Tongues in Aspic. Dissonant music is rarely lacking in melody, and the pieces played here illustrate that pretty well.
I think the best kind of metal is the mix between the two. BIG HUGE melodic choruses and and dissonant verses breakdowns. Basically whatever will fit the song and whatever will do the best job of what you are going for.
As a power metal fanboy, I definitely preferred the melodic stuff. I recognize that the dissonant riffs have their place (and certainly their fans), but if you want to get my attention, it's gonna be with a melodic riff, and this had some good ones.
I’ve never been able to get into Power Metal, I think mainly because of the vocals. But, I can definitely respect it musically. It has a lot of melody in the riffs :)
@@peteplaysmusic Yeah, I could tell your "melodic" riffs were very much in the vein of MeloDeath, but I like that as well. I just like Power Metal more. XD
I prefer melodic if it's in minor, Harmonic minor, double harmonic major, or phrygian. The dissonant sections are good but they still have a sense of melody. Idk From the title I was expecting melodic riffs vs full on discordant riffs (like something off of "Ad Nauseams- imperative imperceptible impulse")
This sounds like an old IWRESTLEDABEARONCE track, back and forth between melodeath or melodic proggy metalcore riffs and dissonant blackened death, deathcore, and/or grindcore type riffs.
What about even rhythm metal vs. clunky metal? "Clunky" rhythms may consist of quarter note triplets, 16th note septuplets, and 8th note quintuplets (called "10th notes" by one drummer, they would be 5 notes over 2 beats in common time) in addition to values like 8th and 16th notes. Several or many of these notes with diverse values would play across beats.
I had to leave a comment, when I discovered dissonant metal music like Gojira in the mid 2000’s it really blew me away. I would stay in a complete trance for minutes at a time 😮

Melody and dissonance are not opposed. Dissonance is the opposite of harmony, and melody can be either harmonious or dissonant, as the MELODY playing IN your dissonant pieces proves. Also, that first piece did evoke "metal" to me at all. It was definitely more power/pop punk along the lines of blink 182.

Dissonant into yet more dissonance luvlee jublee, followed by a few chugs, happy boy! Melodic or Dissonant we all won because we got a piece of what we love :)
So many thousands of years of evolution and I end up liking the dissonant stuff. I honestly dislike melodic metal, most of It makes me cringe, but it depends very much on what the melody is. Dissonant for sure for me
A melodic song but with way more shreding in the solo and a dissonant breakdown
Having dissonance build up tension in a song and then having it shattered by a beautiful melodic line is truly and experience.
