My friend was shot and killed by his wife over 20 years ago. We hung out every weekend and you think you know someone. But throughout the two years it took to get to trial, the things I learned about them, I questioned whether I knew them at all. People keep secrets, very easily.

It's not for us to judge. I think they were trying to help a troubled soul who lost his mom. They aren't trained professionals, they tried and it is beyond heartbreaking for everyone.

He claims he "thought" he had the only key to gun safe but according to him, at 5:30 he says he was there when the gun safe was purchased and at 6:16 his wife states that one of the rules that he "followed" was that he wasn't permitted to take the guns out when they weren't home. Now, maybe I'm reading into this too closely, but if you have the "only key", or at least THOUGHT that you did, then why is this rule necessary to begin with? Something is off here. I think they know a little more than they are letting on. I believe they were at the very least extremely careless. They knew they had a mentally unstable person living under their roof (took him to counseling just days prior) and they also knew he had an arsenal under that same roof. And based on their own words, I believe they knew he had unfettered access to that safe. Again, why in the hell would it be necessary to forbid him to have the weapons out when they were not home if he did not have access to them anyway? If they have 2 cars & 2 sets of keys, then likely the gun safe key was on the Dad's keychain. I don’t put any blame on these parents. They have huge caring hearts to have taken him in and try and make his life better after he became an orphan. They were blindsided and uninformed over the couple of months this kid was there abiding by their house rules...or so they thought. In a short time they provided him with shelter, care, love, therapy, found him a job, etc. Shame on the professionals and other people that knew this kid was severely troubled...who didn’t clue them in as to what was really going on.

I helped one of my son's friends like this when he needed a place to stay, but I would not have allowed him to bring an AR-15. Fortunately he was not a gun owner. I feel sorry for these people and their son. They were trying to help and now their lives will be forever changed.

I am watching this video because the shooter is getting sentenced. But, although this people are not at fault and tried to help Nicolas Cruz, I take away a couple of things from this situation. It is not a good idea to allow a young person who you don’t know that well, around guns. And, I don’t care who it is, your kid or your kid’s friends, you should be aware of their social media postings, or at least try to be on top of that.

Even if you think you do, they are still steps ahead of us. Teens have secrets. Always did. Always will. Now the issue is that they can get in far more trouble than we did "back in the day". When my kids were in school i allowed a number of their friends come stay with us at different times and i know I would feel absolutely horrible if they had ever done something like this. Besides raising our own children,.. we opened our home to several “teen to young adult” children (some were family). We tried to help them all as they were having difficulty at their dysfunctional family units. It’s not this couples fault what Nick ended up doing. You never know what’s going on in one’s mind,..not even in your own Childrens minds sometimes. It’s such a horrific and sad situation all the way around.💔
This is a person who suffers from mental/emotional illness. What happened was absolutely horrific, no one is diminishing that. However, this child needed serious, serious help that went unanswered. Look at him as the person with a challenge that he is. I personally do not for one second believe he knew the consequences for his actions. I see a young man who was so emotionally and mentally tortured he snapped and lashed out. Like the straw that broke the camels back he just for whatever reason could not contain the pain and rage built up inside. Does that excuse his actions absolutely NOT! Does that mean he should not be punished? NO he should however, he STILL needs help serious help!! Why did it take something like this to happen? I have a daughter with Autism they can exhibit major mood swings and act out.Especially boys. When I ask my daughter what is bothering her many times she cannot put into words what is bothering her until we take a lot of time to figure it out. It sounds to me this person did not have that luxury which should not be a luxury at all. It should be considered a necessity to all kids not just the challenged. How sad is it that he thinks he deserves to die? That living somehow is worse than death! Doesn't that speak volumes? Many challenged kids despite what ppl. think can sense when you are going through the motions of being kind. Would you want ppl to do that to you? Pretend to care when in reality you are just doing it out of a sense of obligation or worse to seek recognition for "doing a good deed". I had a near death experience when I was perceived dead I never felt more love, peace and joy than I did during that time. Mere words cannot give it justice. As I watched from above my body, all I wanted was to convey to my loved ones to not cry or suffer because I felt the best I ever had . I came from a very loving family. This love was different though it was so pure abundant ans engulfing such a beautiful feeling. I hope and pray this brings a little peace to your day. I know the hardest thing for you to do is to forgive but in order for you to truly live again you will need to forgive. The Snead family took in Nikolas because his adoptive father was dead for several years & his adoptive mother had just died around the end of November of the previous year. The Snead family has a biological son. It's scary to think that they didn't know anything about Nikolas's issues & social media accounts. They were all possibly in danger & just didn't know it. They feel badly that they didn't see signs but Nikolas was clever enough to hide what he was contemplating. I hope that this family can move on eventually & that their son doesn't get any backlash from Nikolas having lived in their home. I am thinking that the son would be O.K. but they all need counseling to heal & deal with this grief. I wish them the best.
Most people understand how kind two people have to be to let their sons friend live with them. My parents are amazing and I highly doubt they would let one of my friends just come live with us and take care of them like their own even if they wanted to. It’s not an easy decision as a parent to do something like that, having your own kid is already hard and challenging enough and to take in someone whose not your own and clothe them, feed them, put up any expenses they may require is such a kind act. Do not blame these two for what happened. NC did this on his own and is solely his fault, he must fully take responsibility by himself and we can’t allow others to cast his blame upon others and ruin more people lives for his actions. The father (yes I know it’s not his actual father) says he thought he was the only one who had the key to the safe. Gun Safes are shipped standard from the factory with 2 keys, every gun safe owner knows that , you keep one on your keychain and you hide the second. I see your point but how did the gun safe appear? Someone bought it so did it come with only one key? Then how did a second key get in nic’s hand or nic was able to get the or found the sole single key ? In which case, at least in Canada the father is chargeable under our firearms act failure to secure. Either way nic got into the safe. Oh and in Canada we require double locks the safe or locked box and trigger lock. The theory is that in an act of rage having to use two different types of keys to open safe and trigger lock will slow you down so you might think twice or calm down.

Ummm...I grew up in TX and now live in ID and have family in MS and AL. We all have guns. If we died my son would inherit our guns and would probably keep them. I can understand that this family would not have known what Nikolas Cruz had planned all along, but when you take a kid into your home, who possesses numerous firearms, red flags are clearly visible! “I thought I was the only one to have the key to the gun safe”, does not sound very assuring!
I just watched another video of a call made to the police back a few months ago from the lady who took him in saying that there was a fight apparently between her son and the nick and that she was going to take the guns away...so why are they sitting here lying and saying that they never saw it coming and that he was respectful...? This doesn’t add up, someone is lying
I feel terrible for these people. I cannot imagine what they’re going through but the gun safe things sounds a little shady. How did he not know there was more than one key? Also; he didn’t question why this kid would want to take a gun of the safe to “clean it”. Why would a gun that’s locked up in a safe need to be cleaned? Why would they even allow some strange kid to bring weapons into their home!?
Because, he was a legal gun owner who they were trying to help through a bad time. They stipulated a gun safe they demanded the key, he deceived them. He didn't reveal his true self because he knew they wouldn't approve, and kick him out. I believe them, seem like good people and they help him and this is the Thanks he gives them.

This story sounds awfully familiar to a recent Netflix Show- 'The End of the F***ing World'. There's a teenage boy who seems kind of normal to his father, his mother died when he was young and so he was mentally affected, he killed animals in his spare time and had the urge to move on to 'bigger things'. He wanted to take human life. This all seems a bit coincidental :/
Coincidental is exactly what it is, and it's also very common among human stories. There are only so many combinations of stories that are interesting, and sometimes they are very similar to each other. This guy's mother died when he was 18 or 19, still young, but an adult. Having a parent die is not enough to turn someone into a spree shooter, unless you are otherwise deeply disturbed already.
Don't comment if you're not going to make sense. I'm not just simply comparing a show to reality, I'm insinuating that perhaps it is worth looking into. Perhaps the shooter saw the show and was inspired by it. It wouldn't be the first time. The media heavily influences us and some people more than others.
THIS family tried to help a kid who had just lost his only parent. They have nothing to apologize for. I don't know how to access/use/start an instagram account so why do people think they should have known? He was polite and followed the rules. The only thing I see as wrong is that the father figure let the teenager dictate to him as to him NOT going to school. Unfortunately, alot of people do that these days with their own children.

The way I see it is that these foster parents screwed up with letting a TEENAGER have access to guns!! I understand that people "want" to let someone have their right to the second amendment, BUT if your a household which doesn't have a gun in it AND THEN you bring someone else into your home and they have guns; especially when they're still a teenager, then you're at fault for letting that teenager have a gun! Because NO TEENAGER is mentally mature enough to possess a firearm (IMO)! If Nikolas was already like in his mid to late twenties, then that would be a whole different story. Even car insurance companies charge a higher premium for people under the age 25 because they understand that young adults are still reckless and careless in their youth. There are literally hundreds of thousands of 14-18 year old teenagers that hunt and participate in competitive shooting sports and they dont murder anyone.. . He claims he "thought" he had the only key to gun safe but according to him, at 5:30 he says he was there when the gun safe was purchased and at 6:16 his wife states that one of the rules that he "followed" was that he wasn't permitted to take the guns out when they weren't home. Now, maybe I'm reading into this too closely, but if you have the "only key", or at least THOUGHT that you did, then why is this rule necessary to begin with? Something is off here. I think they know a little more than they are letting on. I believe they were at the very least extremely careless. They knew they had a mentally unstable person living under their roof (took him to counseling just days prior) and they also knew he had an arsenal under that same roof. And based on their own words, I believe they knew he had unfettered access to that safe. Again, why in the hell would it be necessary to forbid him to have the weapons out when they were not home if he did not have access to them anyway? I wish the camera had cut to their attorney when she opened her mouth about that tid bit. Talk about a head-in-hands moment.

If they have 2 cars & 2 sets of keys, then likely the gun safe key was on the Dad's keychain. If they went out together in the Mum's car, presumably they would have taken her keys & left his keys at home in their keyholder, where he could have accessed it, but they assumed since he was so well behaved in their presence that he wouldn't do so

I don’t put any blame on these parents. They have huge caring hearts to have taken him in and try and make his life better after he became an orphan. They were blindsided and uninformed over the couple of months this kid was there abiding by their house rules...or so they thought. In a short time they provided him with shelter, care, love, therapy, found him a job, etc. Shame on the professionals and other people that knew this kid was severely troubled...who didn’t clue them in as to what was really going on.

I am watching this video because the shooter is getting sentenced. But, although this people are not at fault and tried to help Nicolas Cruz, I take away a couple of things from this situation. It is not a good idea to allow a young person who you don’t know that well, around guns. And, I don’t care who it is, your kid or your kid’s friends, you should be aware of their social media postings, or at least try to be on top of that.

Besides raising our own children,.. we opened our home to several “teen to young adult” children (some were family). We tried to help them all as they were having difficulty at their dysfunctional family units. It’s not this couples fault what Nick ended up doing. This is a person who suffers from mental/emotional illness. What happened was absolutely horrific, no one is diminishing that. However, this child needed serious, serious help that went unanswered. Look at him as the person with a challenge that he is. I personally do not for one second believe he knew the consequences for his actions. I see a young man who was so emotionally and mentally tortured he snapped and lashed out. The Snead family took in Nikolas because his adoptive father was dead for several years & his adoptive mother had just died around the end of November of the previous year. The Snead family has a biological son. It's scary to think that they didn't know anything about Nikolas's issues & social media accounts. They were all possibly in danger & just didn't know it. They feel badly that they didn't see signs but Nikolas was clever enough to hide what he was contemplating. I hope that this family can move on eventually & that their son doesn't get any backlash from Nikolas having lived in their home. I am thinking that the son would be O.K. but they all need counseling to heal & deal with this grief. I wish them the best.

Most people understand how kind two people have to be to let their sons friend live with them. My parents are amazing and I highly doubt they would let one of my friends just come live with us and take care of them like their own even if they wanted to. It’s not an easy decision as a parent to do something like that, having your own kid is already hard and challenging enough and to take in someone whose not your own and clothe them, feed them, put up any expenses they may require is such a kind act. Do not blame these two for what happened. NC did this on his own and is solely his fault, he must fully take responsibility by himself and we can’t allow others to cast his blame upon others and ruin more people lives for his actions. I hope these two and their son find peace in their life one day.

Gun Safes are shipped standard from the factory with 2 keys, every gun safe owner knows that , you keep one on your keychain and you hide the second. I see your point but how did the gun safe appear? Someone bought it so did it come with only one key? Then how did a second key get in nic’s hand or nic was able to get the or found the sole single key ? In which case, at least in Canada the father is chargeable under our firearms act failure to secure. Either way nic got into the safe. Oh and in Canada we require double locks the safe or locked box and trigger lock. The theory is that in an act of rage having to use two different types of keys to open safe and trigger lock will slow you down so you might think twice or calm down.

Why would anyone have dangerous weapons unless the person has the intention of hurting someone or causing a lot damage? I would not allow anyone to be under my care to bring those weapons to my home. No way.

You should clarify what weapon your referring too. Because knifes can easily be considered dangerous weapon. I own a gun & it's primary use is for hunting. However I've used my gun to stop a man from breaking into my grandmothers home who had a butcher knife on him.

In no way am I blaming these people I just need to understand where normalcy lies that a high school aged child would need a gun safe and guns? That to me would have been questionable, I would not have allowed that part of his belongings to move into my home.

That is a codependent overly optimistic and empathetic attitude towards someone like this. No he could never be normal. This is so far back in the roots of his personality it's as guaranteed as the fact that he's a red headed freckled man. It's within his personality genetic wiring. And no amount of therapy, friends, family, cops, foster homes, cps interventions will change who he is. He's a manipulative controlling, "narcissistic" personality, and that in itself guarantees that you are giving him too much credit. This kid, Brian Laundry, so many many publicly covered instances of people like this. It's how they were raised in early early childhood and that can't be changed or reversed. It's as much a disorder/disease as cancer, except medications and therapy typically does nothing except exaggerate low lows and higher highs and instability within them.

This story sounds awfully familiar to a recent Netflix Show- 'The End of the F***ing World'. There's a teenage boy who seems kind of normal to his father, his mother died when he was young and so he was mentally affected, he killed animals in his spare time and had the urge to move on to 'bigger things'. He wanted to take human life. This all seems a bit coincidental :/

Coincidental is exactly what it is, and it's also very common among human stories. There are only so many combinations of stories that are interesting, and sometimes they are very similar to each other. This guy's mother died when he was 18 or 19, still young, but an adult. Having a parent die is not enough to turn someone into a spree shooter, unless you are otherwise deeply disturbed already.

Perhaps the shooter saw the show and was inspired by it. It wouldn't be the first time. The media heavily influences us and some people more than others.

THIS family tried to help a kid who had just lost his only parent. They have nothing to apologize for. I don't know how to access/use/start an instagram account so why do people think they should have known? He was polite and followed the rules. The only thing I see as wrong is that the father figure let the teenager dictate to him as to him NOT going to school. Unfortunately, alot of people do that these days with their own children.
Yeah but he was old enough to work it's not like he couldn't fend for himself and to let him in with guns very suspect....
Not the same people dude. He moved in with other people a few days after his mom died and they kicked him out because of his behavior. He moved with these people only a few months ago.

GRIMLOCK07 I know that but everyone has to go by the same court procedure. Even though he admitted to police he did it the court has to rule that he did it. A huge media outlet like ABC can get in trouble for saying hes guilty without the court saying hes guilty even if the defendant admitted his crimes to police. At the end of the day he still plead not Guilty though, I suppose for the fighting chance to live the rest of his life out in a mental health facility instead of state prison.

They probably thought that the patents r part of it. Sometimes we do stuff and it turns up as failure. Ppl think they where part of this shooting. I would never have part of my son or daughter if they killed someone.
These people are only guilty of kind hearts, and taking a young man in that had lost his parents. I can not imagine how these people must feel, but they damn sure haven't done anything or anyone wrong. God Bless them. I hope this doesn't stop them from opening up their heart again to someone in need, they have a lot of love to offer.

My heart breaks for this family and for all the families that lost loved ones. I hope the public understands that the family was trying to help a kid who was alone when his stepmom passed.

The way I see it is that these foster parents screwed up with letting a TEENAGER have access to guns!! I understand that people "want" to let someone have their right to the second amendment, BUT if your a household which doesn't have a gun in it AND THEN you bring someone else into your home and they have guns; especially when they're still a teenager, then you're at fault for letting that teenager have a gun! Because NO TEENAGER is mentally mature enough to possess a firearm (IMO)! If Nikolas was already like in his mid to late twenties, then that would be a whole different story. BUT this guy was still in his youth, still mentally developing AND he shouldn't of had access to guns at such a young age! This is why gun laws need to change and need to make the minimum age of owning a firearm someone where at the age of 25. Even car insurance companies charge a higher premium for people under the age 25 because they understand that young adults are still reckless and careless in their youth. And if car insurance companies understand this concept then law makers need to understand this too and make gun laws to keep firearms out of the hands of people under 25!!

There are literally hundreds of thousands of 14-18 year old teenagers that hunt and participate in competitive shooting sports and they dont murder anyone.. . This has nothing to do with age and everything to do with mental illness. A normal 16 or 18 year old kid with a healthy brain knows that murder is wrong, regardless if there brains are fully developed or not. It doesn't matter if nick was 18 years old or 28 years old, mentally ill people shouldn't own firearms. Unfortunately nobody spotted the mental illness.

And this is because teens brains are still growing, still maturing, still developing AND are still being molded by what ever environment they are in. This is why NO KID, NO TEEN and NO young adult under the age of 21 (me personally believe no one under the age of 26 would be better, but that's another argument for another day).... SHOULD be allowed to possess, own or handle a firearm! NOT EVEN with their parents presents! And I say not even with their parents presents because any right minded, competent parent would know and understand that they shouldn't be putting a firearm in their child's hands and shouldn't be teaching their child about firearms at those young age, in the first place!! Just like how responsible, competent parents don't introduce children to sex and have their child "watch" people have sex or give their child drugs to use! Even though adults do these things!

I'm really baffled at why they would allow a young man in High School to have Guns in their home? A gun safe whereby the father "thought" he had the only key? I just can't fathom that there was absolutely nothing unusual they couldn't see in this sociopath. Where were they when calls about this guy were made to the FBI? Why weren't they involved in being made aware of so many students concerns? I'm not blaming or judging them, I'm just finding hard to understand. Their son knew nothing was "off" either? I do find that a bit strange. I would of not of let him bring the guns in...they are probably gun owners so that's why I'm assuming. Grave mistake but still they couldn't of known he would do something so extreme and vile.

at 5:20 they say they got this kid a GunSafe. A gunsafe is very expensive and heavy. Not only that three eyewitnesses say the gunman was wearing a bulletproof facemask and underneath a skimask. A bullet proof vest, and enough magazines to shoot 100's of rounds. This is a ton of money!!!! If he worked at dollar store it would have been "after" school he could never have afforded a AR 13 guns a bullet proof vest, a bullet proof mask, high capacity magazines, a gun safe. this Guardian dad guy has just contradicted himself! He said he checked all the paperwork on his guns, then immediately said he doesn't know what he had. None of this makes any sense. And any kid would be totally excited to buy a Car the moment he could afford it.
