    ....Then you can turn on the terrain by selecting the 'toggle terrain' button from the toolbar (getting started toolbar - View > Toolbars > Getting Started) once the terrain has been generated, you can make a rectangle just bigger that the size of the terrain selection make mulitple copies of the rectangle at set distances until all the terrain is covered (NOTE: measurements are to scale) once all the rectangles are in place, select all > right click > Intersect Faces > with model......

    Firstly Right-Click the terrain and select explode. This should then enable you to edit the terrain. Go the sections you want to edit. From here you can do two things: actually delete the extra lines using the Erase tool, or you can ''Hide'' the lines by holding Ctrl or Command (mac) and delete the lines using the erase tool as you normally would.
    Hope this helped.

    You can easily draw in su in different plane, to do this just establish the planes first ,draw a line in "blue" direction (it could be of any size) the end of the line "blue" indicates the level indicated at the time when you entered the dimension of the blue line, than mark that plan (draw a rectangle) now you can establish the next level. From a corner of the rectagle just drawon draw a new line in "blue direction" the dimension of which will indicate the new plan, and so on ...

    There are two ways of creating contour lines that I know of, niether is easier than the other. One of the ways is literally drawing some contours with the free hand tool and making each higher than the previous contour. this is mainly for custom terrain.
    For existing terrain, say a mountain range you can get the relief of the terrain (how it looks) from the Geo-Locator (File > geo-location > new location) from which you select a region and it puts that region into your model....... tbc

    As far as I know, there is no way to draw on different planes. In this video I started from out to in when drawing the lines. Once each 'level' was created, I deleted the face of that shape so just the outline remains. Then I did the next 'level' inside that shape, and then move it up afterwards, then do as previous, but the other way round; so drawing the 'level' then deleting the faces. Continue doing this and its pretty easy. If you don't get it, let me know, I'll make a video.

    @coryelisabeth Nope, its the free version. the tools are in a toolbar, but it is not default on Sketchup, you have to activate it. We have a Tutorial on how to activate them. Go to our channel and find the video:
    Sketchup 8 - Sandbox Tools - Finding the Tools
    Hope this helps.

    Ok, lemme see if I got this... So, in order to build terrain from contours in SketchUp, I need to use the "From Contours" tool in Sketchup in order to build the terrain.
    Wow, thanks man - I don't think I would have _ever_ figured that one out in a million years!

    Also, if your still not sure, watch a tutorial by concept3Dmodeling called: 'SketchUp Tips and Tricks: Creating Contour Lines From Google Earth Terrain' just to make sure you're doing everything correctly.

    If you're not going to provide a narration, slow down with the mouse. It's hard to read from the bottom of the screen, while trying to see what the mouse is doing at the top.

    Sorry for long wait for a reply, I've been pre-occupied with university stuff.
    From what you have said, I think I have an idea what may be wrong, but I'm not promising anything. When creating terrain from contours, I've noticed that if the contours themselves are in a vertical position, it goes all weird. I don't know why this happens, but SU doesn't like it. So make sure that your contours are horizontal before to hit the button.
    And I'm pretty sure that it's not the Middle East's fault...

    ...Then simply remove the terrain layer and the extras of the rectangles and you have some contours. I Hope this has cleared things up for you, i know i went on a bit, but if you still are not sure let me know and ill make a quick video showing you.
    curse the character limit....grrrr

    How can I make those curvy lines?

  • @Gasperan1
    @Gasperan1 12 лет назад

    as easy as it seems its kind of weird to draw the lines above each other, as the new ones keep getting glued with the ones "below"

  • @FPSArchitect
    @FPSArchitect  12 лет назад

    Nope, this can be done on the free version too, you need to enable Sandbox Tools - I have done a video for this - then you can create the terrain.

    I have a big mess with no verts it seems..I did all as in this video,but instead of half way decent polys connected as in your'from contour' step, I have a mess of disconnected verts with no polys created. I got my terrain from GE, Israel area, is that the problem , that the middle east doesn't give nice details for from contour as other areas ?

    So, I am currently using adobe illustrator. I do have it importing into sketchup as a .DWG, but when its imported in, all of the lines are connected. So, for example, when I try to delete the box bordering the contour lines, it deletes the entire map.

      check to make sure you dont have it grouped (right click>Explode) then you should be able to delete what you want

      If you right click a blank space on your upper toolbar, you should be able to find the Sandbox. If not, you can find the tools in your Tool menu -> sandbox.
      Note: The sandbox tool comes default with SketchUp, but sometimes you have to enable it. On SketchUp 2016 or older: go to Window -> Preferences -> Extensions and tick the box next to "Sandbox". On 2017: go to window -> extension manager and enable it.
