I worked there as a security officer and manager in the mid 1990s. It was still called the White House Motel. The apartment on the second floor of the main building is where the owner's son resided. I've been up in that attic in the summer and you're right, it is hot as Hell in there. There used to be a clock tower above the attic. The main lobby was impressive before they ripped it out and turned it into a nightclub. The front desk was huge and there was a fireplace in the lobby too. It's a shame someone couldn't renovate it and make a decent business out of it. In the 60s and 70s, the motel was usually occupied by people travelling to Maryland to gamble. There were slot machines in the bar and lobby, but that was before I worked there. In the 70s, race fans would stay there to attend the car races at Budd's Creek raceway.

The sign that said "Welcome to the shining... murder" was probably arranged by one of the people that rifled through the place to look for money and valuables.

@X G that's so true. I care, but I'm not rich. If we taxed the top 10% properly, we could easily provide for the bottom 50%, in addition to whatever they could provide for themselves. That's why I'm Socialist. It's not a dirty word kids, it just means not letting the rich and powerful take everything. People can still get rich, plenty rich, but not to such an immoral degree that 60 million others have to do without some form of basic needs. It's sad that we have a sick political party (Republicans) that will fight to the death to defend this system (unregulated predatory capitalism).
I think that every single time I watch these. It makes me so sad and angry that people and the government are so greedy that people are sleeping in the rain and snow when they could at least have shelter.
I think logically it was a production failure. Those animal noises can only be observed at dusk and dawn. Not midday. I’m a Dan bell fan too, not just here to shit talk.
@@Andrew0089 Well said. Anyone who does any kind of sound design has to think quite carefully about the behaviour of animals at different times of day.
Looks like someone may had been living in that top room towards the end. Had a monster drink, power strip, bathroom with air freshener and stuff in it, etc. Looked like stuff that wouldn't had been left behind or is somewhat recent.
Hey Dan, don't know if you know this but since this video they have taken most of everything out of the motel and are restoring it into a homeless shelter, nice video.
You have GOT to get a team to go with you to places like this. It worries me to see things like this, especially the child asylum thingy. There is proof that someone (Or maybe even multiple people) were following you and watching you the whole time. Please, just be safe about this. We really care about your safety, and a line is crossed when you making videos for us puts you/your life in danger. Take care :)

@thisisdanbell , I stayed at this Motel close to 20 years ago driving back from Florida with my family. It was not a nice motel back then. (Pretty scary, actually.) When I saw this, I called my parents and I just mentioned the name and the video of watching it and my parents remembered it just by the name.

I found a few of the people on FaceBook that were on the "Do Not Rent" list, send a message to Adam Quade, linked him the video, said he was kicked out for smoking weed in the room lmao.
Yea big info anyone can find in less than five minutes. Why you bother posting it I don’t know since it’s not anything interesting about the space being explored, in other words, who cares! If that loser was that interesting to people they could go waste their own time to look it up. Busy body people. Oooo look a criminal! Probably some serial killer!! Lol.

*Gate open, backdoor open, just walks right in* THAT'S THE START TO EVERY HORROR GAME/MOVIE CMON MAN! Also, you are incredibly brave. You get so much respect.
I'm from South Africa. And seeing videos like this is unbelievable to me. The fact that there are still windows and a roof is amazing enough. In SA, if a house is abandoned for a month EVERY THING is stripped, broken and stolen. All down to the toilets, Roof, Glass, Pipes... you name it.
You're probably the best urban explorer on RUclips . I really like how you don't overreact to anything . your commentary is really interesting and not jarring ,nor unnecessary . And you really focus on the building and not SPOOKY GHOST Noise.
I'm really surprised that no one else has ever made the connection of the chandelier in the main section of the motel, and the box of crystal bobbles in the attic (that go with it). Worth quite a bit of money if it were cleaned and put back together (which isn't difficult). Proof that thieves and vandals are stupid.
I think it's really sad that so many places like this are left empty and basically just left to rot. It could be turned into something cool. Places like this would be great to make into sleep shelters for homeless people. It would be nice to see something like that happen because there are way too many abandoned places that could be put to good uss
So.... Being it was called the Shine Inn, did you see a pair of creepy twins that said, "Come play with us, Dan Bell... Come play with us.... Forever.... and ever...."
Considering legal concealed carry is pretty much nonexistant in MD, and the police would immediately assume he's carrying for offensive purposes rather than defensive on the offchance he got caught, pepper spray is generally a smarter choice in this type of urbex situation. I'm almost positive he carries pepper spray (or something similar) for those reasons.
Love it. Our motels here end up being cheap apartments. I like the fact that you are checking them out but doing it safely. Beware lead paint and mold, etc. We don't want you to risk your health.
If anyone is in Savannah, GA, stop by the Thunderbird Inn. Classic 50's-'60's motel that has been lovingly renovated and restored. My folks stayed there on a visit and the rooms are really nice and comfy.
being that we hear the wrong throughout the whole video and only heard those bangs at the very end and just a few times I'm going to bet IT WAS NOT THE WIND. YOUR INTUITION IS TELLING YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW. The one thing I've learn in my life through the years is trust your intuition every single time it don't lie and it'll never let you down.
Dan,In the attic was a framed poem or something-called "the unseen guest". If there WAS an unseen guest still lurking about this place,he was trying to make his presence felt to you I reckon!!!
Boy I miss these kind of videos from Dan. There is plenty of urbex out there but NO ONE does it like Dan. It's the wind ambiance added to the videos, slow movement and panning of the camera. Literally no one has picked up on that ambiance effect that makes these so surreal.
There used to be a similar hotel outside of Marfa, TX. Allegely built in the 1940s and in business until 1966. The whole place looked like the people just up & left. Rooms were fully furnished and the sheets were still on the beds. There were even brochures in the lobby, still. Very eerie cause the place was along a very deserted stretch of highway 90 heading to Big Bend. The sand and dust seemed to act as a natural mumifier for all the old stuff. As far as I know the place was torn down as of 2002. It even had a sand filled pool in the courtyard.
The thing that I found interesting was that I did not see even one single solitary bug! I would have expected that every time you entered another room the roaches would have gone scurrying out of sight. The people who left this motel must have done an outstanding job of making sure there was no food left anywhere on the premises. Thanks for the tour.
I was waiting to see signs of animals too, they could have easily pushed those doors open. There's over a foot of snow on the ground in Maryland right now, I hope the little animals found places like this to hide. Hell, I hope the homeless found places like this to hide as well.
I just found your channel and subscribed, very good video. I had an unusual motel experience several years ago. I was doing a bicycle tour and came to the tiny town of Mt. Dora, NM, three or four houses well off the road and a six unit motel between the road and railroad tracks. The motel looked ready for guests but not a soul around it. A storm was approaching so I was glad to find shelter. The office was locked but none of the rooms. No water or electric so I rolled my sleeping bag out on a bed, spent the night and rode on the next morning, still without ever seeing a soul.
You're my new favorite exploration youtuber, Dan. I've bipped around a few channels, but yours is the most interesting and LEAST SHAKYCAM of all I've found. :) I like being able to recognize what I see without having to pause the video and try to make out what's through that motion blur. Also enjoying your choice to narrate rather than comment on the spot. Kinda weeds out heavy breathing and sniffling and other obnoxious noises.
I went to an abandoned home with my friend a few years ago, we use to do this all the time for photoshoots. We found a place close to his house, me him and our other friend went to do a photo shoot and all of us felt like we were being watched. This was at day time. We just got on with it and started to pack up when we saw a black hooded something go past a window. We shat ourselves and stood frozen in spot. We all said at the same time " did you see that" then we all left. A week or two later the house BURNT down. it was in a small village in the UK called Aston. We haven't done any photoshoots since.
Motel was purchased right before the economy took a dump in 08. I’m sure the last owner wasn’t prepared for what happened in the coming years after the purchase. From the pictures and the name on the business license, the owner was Indian and probably put every last penny he had in it.
sharad patel and the property looks like it wasn’t updated for decades. The cost of upkeep, utilities, not to mention renovations, is a huge expense. I hope the owner was able to recover from the losses. Jay Shree Krishna.

+Shill Bots was thinking the same thing while watching his videos now. I watch horror Movies almost daily. But this week, I'm on Dan Bells channel. It's not about jump scares. I know it's not "scarier" like a horror Movie. But I love the mood while watching these videos.I hope you continue uploading loads of these videos Dan!
Mark Gentile America has lots of creepy places :) i envy them for that. In my country buildings unused are not allowed, so they get demolished almost right away. Cost a fortune, but slum is not allowed in any form. So nothing to see here, if it looks abandoned, it is not.
I work at a small motel. It was built in the 40's. We still use metal keys. Due to the design of the mote (every single room is different and has all custom dimensions) we can't do cards. Fortunately in the year and a half since the current owners took over, no customer has ever lost a key.
This is Dan Bell. There's at least two abandoned Scout camps in Oklahoma that I know of and I love to see a video of you exploring them . One is called camp red rock and the other is called camp Scott
This is Dan Bell. Hi Dan! FYI: Ok so there's a somewhat obscure horror film called "Session 9". In a nutshell,it's a movie about a hazmat team that goes into an abandoned insane asylum and well-mayhem ensues.. anyway the movie was actually filmed at an actual psyche hospital that I think is located in the Seattle area??? Not really sure. The movie itself is a pretty great documentation of the place but it would definitely benefit being "Bellinized". Other trivia is this film stars David Caruso before his csi Miami role blew up. Love your videos and commentary. Keep exploring and be careful.

This should NEVER happen in America. Before it fell into disrepair it could have been senior housing. Any kind of housing.
Yeah but nobody wanted to buy the place when it went belly up and the bank took it back
Right? People can live here.
Who would pay for it? Nothing is free
Banks shoukd be ashamed to let a landmark like this go to shit like this has. America needs to be able to get back to the simple days whem this place was in it's heyday. What a waste.

The errieness of the frogs, owl and crow and you approached the back door... excellent.
It was added sound effects. But yes, it made the video better.

@thisisdanbell , I stayed at this Motel close to 20 years ago driving back from Florida with my family. It was not a nice motel back then. (Pretty scary, actually.)
When I saw this, I called my parents and I just mentioned the name and the video of watching it and my parents remembered it just by the name.
Rumors said the attic of the motel was used as an inbreeding brothel.

Also, you are incredibly brave. You get so much respect.
I respected the way you respect the building.

Watching these abandoned places videos are giving me the creeps!
So.... Being it was called the Shine Inn, did you see a pair of creepy twins that said, "Come play with us, Dan Bell... Come play with us.... Forever.... and ever...."

He's probably packin heat. I'd carry if I was up in this joint alone

+Maryann Anderson Roaches only like to live in live motels.

I live in NM, I should definitely check that out.

This place is cleaner than some active places I’ve stayed in. 😅
I live near Stevenage, didn't realise Aston had abandoned buildings. Quite rare to see them in the south.

Why would anyone name their motel the "Shine Inn" and NOT expect to go bankrupt??! LOL
I work at a small motel. It was built in the 40's. We still use metal keys. Due to the design of the mote (every single room is different and has all custom dimensions) we can't do cards. Fortunately in the year and a half since the current owners took over, no customer has ever lost a key.
I’ve never seen a property that can’t have key cards. The real reason is usually cost.
Is the Motel still open? Or has it closed since you posted this comment?

Ok so there's a somewhat obscure horror film called "Session 9".
