I'd say Kai is a little bit better. I like all of the epic scenes that they both are in, but kai is a bit better because he is actually threatening, and his backstory is actually reasonable. Also his theme slaps.
Kai! He had a less lousy backstory, he has an awesome theme song inspired by Imagine Dragons’ Sorry track and he is one of my online friends’ husbando.
Chameleon: "They would say I was too small, too lowly, and that kung fu was not my destiny." Mantis: "Who am I to judge a warrior based on their size? I mean, look at me."
I’ll throw my two cents in and say that the Chameleon symbolizes heart. She wanted to do Kung fu to be strong but lacked the motivation to actually make the effort to learn them (she could have snuck in a dojo then watch and learn how the masters do it) She decided to take the easy way and learned sorcery to steal other peoples experience and skills to get to her end goal. I find it fitting that the Chameleon has no original color code, she takes blue, red, green, and yellow cuz she’s stealing others identity.
I think you are on the right track but I could elaborate it more. It would be wrong to say she did not try anything at all. In the final fight we do see Chameleon using her own style of kung fu using her tail and tongue to fight Zhen. So clearly she engaged in self training. But of course self training won't make as proficient as it would be to train at a kung fu hall with teachers to guide you. Chameleon did say she was once a street criminal at one point of her life so you need to have some combat style if you are a street thug. I think Chameleon is a great villain. She is a great anti-polar of Po who too was humiliated because of his size and appearance but eventually worked hard and proved his naysayers wrong unlike Chameleon who took the easy ways to steal kung fu. Also she represents Change. All the KFP villains are two sides of the same coin as the protagonist type of villains. Chameleon too conforms to this category. Throughout the movie we see Po struggling to embrace intern change. He does not want to embrace new duties as a spiritual leader. Chameleon on the other hand can change externally with ease. People are saying I am looking too much into the script Po explicitly brings it out before the climax. This is what I like about Chameleon the most apart from her voice acting and powers. Here is my ranking of all the villains: - 1) Lord Shen - 9.5/10 Best Characterization 2) Tai Lung - 9.5/10 Best Backstory 3) The Chameleon - 9/10 Best Powers and Design 4) General Kai - 9/10 Best Theme Score I personally like Chameleon slightly more than Kai.
So, I agreed the Chameleon is the weakest villain in the franchise and the definition of miss opportunity. Viola Davis is able to make a small character sound intimidating, her shape shifting abilities is pretty cool, and they did utilize it, the idea she like kung fu but get rejected due to who her unfit body can make her a dark version of Po, as someone who can't achieve greatness themselves, so they steal from others. But she misused or not use them at all. She not only steals power from Tai Lung and Kai, but she also steals ideas from them too.
Although the Chameleon taking the Kung Fu of Tai Lung and Lord Shen makes sense, but why is Kai in this movie? His spirit was completely destroyed by Po at the end of the third movie, all the Chameleon says is "Bring me General Kai!" and then he comes back, how Tai Lung and Lord Shen would've been handled would've been that she was able to resurrect them at the start with her sorcery, and orders them to attack the animals building to lure Po to Juniper City, with Zhen being sent to bring him there, and during the final battle, Lord Shen and Tai Lung have their Kung Fu taken, with the two realizing that the Chameleon only wanted there kung fu if weakened, before helping Po and Zhen take down the Chameleon, though they desire to return to the Spirit Realm, Po offers them a second chance, especially Lord Shen since he took the life of Po's mother, and they could show a montage of Tai Lung, Lord Shen, and Zhen doing some kung fu with the Furious Five and they would at least say one or two things rather than nothing, especially Tai Lung and Lord Shen
Chameleon would have work as a dark magic villain and uses her shapeshifting powers to throw Po off. Also, we should have seen more of her flashback story and see why she's the way she is. She would have felt bad for her like we did with Shen and Tai Lung. She would have work as a criminal mastermind and not afraid to kill if anyone fails her or tries to talk back to her. I read that the Kung Fu Masters that rejected her were horrible just like how they treated Crane when he was young. It shows, what would have happened if Po never met Oogway and Shifu. If Po would have end up like her, if they did better with the Chameleon. Also, she would have been a dark version of peng and lian, since she's Zhen's adopted mother. We never got to see how she raised her in the flashback and their relationship. Did the Chameleon ever did loved Zhen or Zhen did loved her, but the Chameleon was too far gone? Zhen wonders if she would have saved her?
6:33, they could have made her namelessness work if they linked it to her enigmatic nature and made it that no one knows her name since she’s a creature of mystery. But to do that, they should have had the characters and audience be completely in the dark about her backstory.
I'm just confused about how Chameleon was rejected for being short when Mantis is much smaller. Should have been revealed that wasn't the real reason. Maybe have Shifu or Oogway show up and be like, that's not what happened.
It is possible that the Chameleon gave up on her dreams fairly early on instead of continuing to search for people to teach her. This further contrasts her with Po as, while Po was frequently belittled by Shifu and even mocked by the Furious Five in the first movie, he refused to give up his passion for kung fu and ended up attaining the status of Dragon Warrior, proving his naysayers wrong while the Chameleon continued to hold onto her grudges and turned to sorcery to gain power and respect. It is possible however that not all kung fu dojos are as diverse as that of the Jade Palace. This can be connected to the fact that Zhen told Po that he was not like any of the other masters she met, suggesting that the kung fu masters of Juniper City had racial mindsets. Furthermore, it's revealed that other than Tigress Shifu enlisted most of the Furious Five by mistake and planned to sack most of them had they not defeated the Boar. This could mean that the Chameleon grew up in a time period and place where the kung fu masters were not as accepting and thus, had a genuinely tragic past.
Po was initially mocked by Shifu and the Furious 5 (except Viper) for being big, fat, and clumsy, despite there being a Master Elephant twice his size (plus Thundering Rhino, which is just the leader of the Masters Council). They even put him through the same hazard course as the Furious 5 before he got any training in the hopes he would quit. So yeah, it looks like in some schools, it's either "git gud, or get lost".
You mean being tortured and mistreated in life for so many years he/she endures so much pain to the point he/she becomes a Villain. Not really evil, just broken. I just hope there will be a heartbreaking scene where Po tries to reason with the Villain and the Villain stops for a moment with a hint of sadness for a split second before he/she keeps on fighting
I swear we’re not getting any good villains, these days king magnifico, queen, Narissa, those twins from the trolls, and the chameleon just awful agree, or she have a great villain!
One thing i despise about bad movies is when theres missed potential that could've made it actually great, and KFP4, there's is a ton of missed potential with the chameleon, she could've been an epic villan, but she's just plain badly written, as is the whole movie. I haven't even seen it yet and i could tell from the trailer and the chameleons backstory that it's all lousy writing.
Just another villain from dreamworks that feels insecure about their height, rationalising why they need to gain power to feel better about themselves. Difference is farquad and Rumpelstiltskin were actually well written and acted characters whilst the chameleon wasn’t well written.

As one of the strong defenders of Chameleon and Kung Fu Panda 4, I strongly but respectfully disagree. Here are my views on Chameleon and why i think she is a great villain not just because of her shapeshifting powers and the voice acting of Viola Davis but also because of writing and storytelling [LONG THREAD]: - 1) She represents the theme of change. Which is something we see in the best DreamWorks villains. They are polar opposites of the main protagonists. They contrast the theme and the character arc of the hero. Throughout the movie we see how Po struggles to embrace change. He does not want to give up his role as dragon warrior to becoming a spiritual leader. Chameleon on the other hand changes externally throughout the movie with ease. But she refuses to change from within and the movie did have the message "Its never too late to do the right thing." 2) She also contrasts Po's role as a spiritual leader. Even though Po does not like becoming the spiritual leader, he still sees the good in Zhen. He tries to mentor her with the knowledge of Oogway ad Shifu. He gives her a peach pit and life advice. This mirrors how Chameleon hands Zhen a fake jewel peach pit, symbolizing a false destiny. Chameleon exploits Zhen's skills. I also love the placement of the scenes. The scene where Chameleon says to Zhen that she only used her and warns her "Don't Change" is immediately after the scene where Ping and Li tell Po how change is not always a bad thing. It can give new flavors. 3) Then like being a charismatic villain is not new but it still feels special "too make something special you just have to believe its special". Despite her small size she has a commanding presence over the crime lords and walks the table with casual defiance. She serves them with small plates and pots, symbolizing how they have what little she gives them the right to have. 4) Also I like how Chameleon and Po align with the saying "One often meets his destiny on the road he avoids to take it." Po went on this adventure to flee change and after seeing the vision he becomes determined to stop Chameleon but inadvertently gives her the staff, without which Chameleon was powerless against kung fu masters and also he learns to embrace change. I think this also makes Chameleon unique among villains like Tai Lung, Kai, Pitch Black, Drago and so on. They all were invincible and over the top powerful from the start but Chameleon became a threat after getting the staff. This made her rise to power more interesting. 5) Tai Lung challenged Po physically, Lord Shen mentally, Kai spiritually and Chameleon challenged Po's ability to adapt or change because in the end Po decides to give Zhen the staff and defeat Chameleon similar to how Oogway let Po defeat Tai Lung. If the fight continued with Po, I am sure Chameleon would have won but Po adapted. Chameleon did not even shapeshift while fighting Zhen. She underestimated Zhen and I find it ironical because she thought she had been underestimated her whole life by kung fu masters. I also noticed this - Kai was the reason Po became the dragon warrior, Lord Shen ensured Po becomes the dragon warrior, defeating Tai Lung was how Po became the dragon warrior and Chameleon is who makes him let go of his role as dragon warrior. 6) Then the backstory criticism has been refuted several times. Her backstory is "I was rejected from every training hall I went to, they would say I was too small, too lowly and that kung fu was not my destiny." Not "waah, I am short" or "I am Smol". I am sure these people watched memes and reviews before watching the movie and did not pay attention to the dialogues at all. So I give Chameleon and Kai a 9/10 and Lord Shen and Tai Lung 10/10. Yes, I gave Chameleon a 9/10. I am not afraid to express my views. Every time I state positives of the movie and Chameleon, everyone just ridicules me with memes and comments like "Bro is a KFP fanboy", "You are looking too much into the script", etc. Please disagree respectfully. I write this comment for any Chameleon defender who is scrolling through this section and wants someone who has the same views.
