The Amos and Andy Show was on television for only two years, 1951 to 1953, I believe. And what a legacy they left us in fantastic acting and scripts. Then reverse discrimination got them off the air. I Watched them as a young kid who grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, which was racist, the "N" word used freely. Note, too, that the Archie Bunker series or Jackie Gleason's Honeymooners series showed normal white people, and we never thought of the characters as inferior human beings, just everyday people. The Amos and Andy shows never gave me the impression that the characters were lesser people than white people. Just a different color and culture. I've purchased the 60th Anniversary Collectors Edition DVD set. And I'm also watching shows on-line. The quality of the shows and the acting rank with the best comedy series television has ever produced. I'm loving the shows!!!!!! And now I'm going to watch Amos & Andy 54 The Eyeglasses.

This is classic example of great art being restricted by
censorship. The NAACP of all organizations are responsible for this show being removed from the air. This show is so much better than all of the shows of that era and any in the present. This has to be the greatest sitcom in history.....

I don't consider this racist...there are always comedies about goofy misfits..look at Laurel & Hardy and Abbot & Costello who were white. I think it sad that these actors lost their jobs. I had a Black friend who was in medical school at the time..she thought Amos & Andy was fine. We all need to laugh and I LOVE all the old comedies better than the one's today. I am so glad to see these wonderful actors again after more than 50 years!!

Terrific acting. Great comedic timing. Well-developed characters who had heart and edge... And the writing is superb! If you compare this to the white sitcoms from the same era, like Father Knows Best, Life of Riley & Ozzie and Harriet, Amos 'n Andy was far superior! I hadn't watched this shows in many decades, and I can't believe how well they hold up. Funny is funny, and this stuff is top of the line. It's making me think about Curb Your Enthusiasm, because the main characters in each keep getting themselves into situations that backfire on them. They piss other people off, and yet you can't get enough of them. I smiled at these shows too. I am thrilled they're out here.
Tim Moore MADE the show. He was one of the best comedic actors of all time. He didn't get nearly the credit he deserved. The other regulars were all talented, and the deep bench of supporting and character actors was outstanding. These shows highlight the tragedy that Hollywood did not provide decent, ongoing opportunities for gifted black actors to work and thrive in the industry.
