Remember this coming out and being dismissed as cheap bubble gum pop, listening to it over 20 years later there's nothing cheap sounding here. It's really beautiful, professionally put together, each part clearly played/programmed by pros who were the best at what they did. This is hard stuff.
Imagine being 16 recording this and a year later, you’re now a household name. Such an iconic song!!!
Fun fact: Britney was given a few demos of other songs but she just couldn’t find “that” song. And when BOMT landed to her lap and heard the first three notes, she said to Fe (her then Assistant/Friend) “This is it!!! This is my song!!!” or something like that 😅
Another fun fact: Jive Records was pushing her to have a Power Ranger themed Music Video, but she did not want that for her first music video. She came up with the concept, look and scenes. If i’m not mistaken, her entire outfit was less than $50.
Another another fun fact: Max Martin heard the first three notes in his mind as he was sleeping or about to sleep. Good thing he decided to get up, record it before going back to sleep. Damn.

always thought she delivered the vocals on this track (and her whole debut album in general), but hearing them like this makes it even more impressive. she gets a lot of shit for it, but her voice is incredibly versatile - and those lows, mid-belts in this are 👌🏼 thanks for dissecting this iconic piece of music history!

Her natural vocals sounded very similar to xtina so her producers made her change her voice cuz they wanted her to sound unique.
Without that baby voice she probably wouldn’t have become as successful as she’s now

I always thought she sounded like a strangled duck , but her vocal timing and double tracking is very accurate. She does have that Britney quack, but what she lacks in pleasant tone, she makes up for in very expressive vocal styling, with a hint of MJ.

M I saw somewhere that it was a combination of Martin's idea to have a soft vowel sound and Britney's Southern accent. The hard "y" sound felt uncharacteristic.

Tbf a better comparison would be ‘Backstreet’s Back’ and Britney’s ‘Stronger’ - so many identical components in those. Back in the late 90s/early 2000s, this was a classic Max Martin signature. He literally created a genre of musical style. I remember when BOMT debuted on the radio- everybody was bobbing their heads to this! Older,younger,black,white,Asian-it didn’t matter.

Are those backing vocals real people or computer generated ?
They're obviously real. Backing vocals are by Nana Hedin, Max Martin and Britney herself. You can't just generate backing vocals, not even today. And definitely not in 1998. You can use Melodyne to make a clone of the lead vocal sing a harmony, but it tends to sound robotic and thin compared to real harmonies. I think some Katy Perry songs and newer Britney songs have used this method.

Yes? There is hardly any AutoTune on this song. AutoTune had just barely come out back then and it didn't sound very good. It was very obvious in its early iterations.
