Blown away, and wishing I had found this tutorial sooner! So much wasted time trying to mimic a painting and not having a clue what I'm doing (like they say "just have fun" ha ha). I love the reference photo at the beginning and then the detailed strokes that make everything so clear. Because we just celebrated Christmas, my favorite is #4. Thank you! Thank you!
I am only two minutes in but SO freaking excited because I finally found an artist who is teaching painting like my old arts teacher did (unfortunely I didn't stick to it and forgot a lot over the years). So many artists on youtube know nothing about didactics and pretty much just do a speed painting, thinking that that's going to teach people. I mean maybe it does for intermediate and above levels but a true beginner must start at zero, learning the very basic brush strokes that they'll need for a certain technique. Thanks a lot and I'd love to see more of these in depth videos!
@@Shirumoon thank you!!! I have a background in science and breaking things down into pieces has always helped me and that naturally fell over into watercolor. I appreciate you being here 💕
This is amazing! Thank you for showing us the details of how to build the brush strokes from small straight lines to combining strokes and the pitfalls to avoid. How to paint the trunks. Using reference photos, etc. I love this lesson that teach techniques and I appreciate it. I hope to use this to create a Christmas tree for Christmas cards 😊
Thank you for explaining everything… Some artists make it look so simple but you break it down and explain how every piece has to be practiced and it’s not just that I’m bad at it….lol…..I just need to practice more.
Thank you so much. You actually break down the strokes. Practicing trees today and was super frustrating because creator did no explain the strokes. This is super helpful
Thank you so very much! Your method of painting pine trees is the clearest I’ve yet to see. I don’t live where there are many pine trees, so I’m not a very good judge. However, I fell in love with the first one!
I love all your tips to paint these lovely trees. I think the reference photo is very helpful. The way you paint the trunks and ground beneath really gives your trees beauty and life. Thank you for taking the time to share your talent💕
Excellent tutorial , very useful technique on the brushstrokes , I learned a lot how to make the trees look natural and not overworking the branches and needles. Very good and helpful. I like them all but maybe the number 1 and 3 are my favourites! Thank you so much for this video.
I like having the final painting as you are working ... as you said, it helps to see where you are going and so a bit of the "why". I like all of the trees ... hard to pick a favorite! I live on wooded acreage in NW Montana. I paint a lot of trees and they all look the same and not "real". Then I look at the real things and realize they are so different as you described. SO ... will practice with this video and also my observational skills outside. Thank you!
Thank you Kristin for sharing your ways of painting and describing the brush strokes to us to use. It flowed and was easy to watch. Definitely having low medium and dark highlights makes it look more aesthetic which you demonstrate so well. Have a great day until next time take care 😊

I understand. I am not a natural artist, but I have always thought watercolor ( and those that can create with it) are super cool, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you 🙏 I just wanted to have enough water color sense to feel confident enough to have a play, to give it a go, I will now binge watch all your videos, and just subscribed! 😊❤🎉
Outstanding! Great instruction. #3 is my fav! Yes, yes, yes - the photo of your finished painting as a reference during the tutorial is a valuable tool. Thanks for all your work to create quality content.
Hi Kristin, thank u for this tutorial. I am really struggling with understanding the different brush strokes, and how to combine them. I watched this part of the video, slowed down, several times and I just can not follow how to make the marks. I know that u are very talented & I am most appreciative of how much work you must have done. I would be appreciative for any advice. Thank you so much!
@@tarablouin3260 hi Tara! It doesn’t have to be exact, just practice similar movements. Flicking out, using the very tip of the brush, changing the weight and texture. The more you play around with it the more it will become clear. Sometimes I use a whole scratch piece of paper just flicking my brush around to create muscle memory and see what I like. Let me know if that helps!
Hi Kristin! Love this video. When you say Princeton 4 long round brush, is there a difference between 4 round and a 4 long round? Not sure what I should be looking for. Thank you for your guidance 😊
@@saftah0305 yes there’s a slight difference. The long round has longer bristles making the brush a little more springy. A round 4 would still work if you can’t find it! I’m new to the “long round” shape but my first one was a long round 8 and I use it for everything! It’s Princeton brand that does the long round sizes
are you able to say what exact colours/ mix you used for the needles/ branches? you mentioned mixing indigo into sap green in the voiceover but neither of those colours are in the palette you’ve put in description. i’m struggling with getting the correct green when i mix my own. thanks ☺️ love the tutorial, very helpful! tree number four is my favourite! i love the fullness and fluffiness of it
@@xxJINTxx yes sorry! Sometimes I change my palette and forget to change the description. I’m using sap green and indigo both from winsor and Newton. Sometimes a bit of cad yellow in there as well to brighten it up
I kept watching her turn that brush around and finally saw that it’s a Princeton Velvetouch. They tend to have a better fine point than the Neptune series.
Great tutorial, Kristin. I really struggle with pines and the exercises at the beginning are so helpful! I recently purchased the Princeton Velvetouch long round (I think a size 6) but I love the springiness and fine tip of these brushes. I originally started with P Select and P Neptune brushes and struggled with getting precise details on trees. I excited to put all these tips to use. Thank you!
