  • It's International Chess Day and we're going to take a look at a Star Trek 3-dimensional chess set, talk about space travel, Apollo 11, and some great TV shows that you may want to binge on. Plus there's a video. This article has it all.
July 20th is International Chess Day (also called World Chess Day by the United Nations). In honor of the, the folks at The Noble Collection asked me if I wanted to review their Star Trek chess set. Sometimes my job is really cool.
In the accompanying video, you can see the entire chess set in action. It's actually a lot nicer than I expected. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I guess I figured it was going to be some kid's toy. It's not. It's much more collectable quality. Watch the video. You'll see.

I just got one of these and I'm trying to figure out the rules. There are a few fan made rulesets online but it doesn't sound like any of them are the accepted defacto rules that everyone follows.

I have no idea. I always just figured Spock made it up as he played.

How does it compare with the blue one by a different manufacturer?

Ha! No idea. The vendor sent me one and it was cool. I am not a Star Trek chess board collector (or much of a collector of anything). That's probably a question for some specialized Trek board or Facebook group.

@@AdvancedGeekery Actually the one he is referring to was put out by The Franklin Mint back in the early ‘90s it is only half the size of the Nobel Collections set and very expensive even today. And by the way you set your pieces up on the boards completely wrong. If you have the Star Trek Starfleet Technical Manual the diagram of the Tri-Dimensional chess set shows you exactly where the pieces go on the boards

I remember watching Spock playing chess against the leader of the Kelvins; purposely busting his chops over Kirk making a play for Kalinda.
