    I once played on a board where the 4 central squares were the highest and everything sloped down from there. It really added a sense of power to that high ground because you have to fight to get up and then attacking from there feels like you have gravity on your side. I highly suggest making a board like this if you are still interested.

      Thanks Melinda .. I know what you mean about the high ground in the middle .. i like the flow of the board with the corners high but will have to look at your suggestion. .im more about the look of the board than the playing it's been mentioned that I even set the peices wrong oops .. thanks for watching 👍

      Board is just a place holder. Game is inside your head. :) Many chess players can play without a board at all! :D
      This is a brilliant conversation starter and might lead to a few more games than you would play otherwise.
      Love it!

    • @haqeeqee
      @haqeeqee 5 лет назад +6

      Maybe you could make the same thing again but just make it a lot lower. So that there isn’t a huge difference between the high and the low points.
      That way, you could still keep this beautiful effect and it wouldn’t be so hard to play a game on this board.

    1 thing i dont realy like. But its minor. On each sides(black or white) there should be always a black square on your left hand side cuz it will most likely mess up common stratagies or openings.
    Other than that good idea for a chess board but it will most likely be hard to play on it :)

    • @AndyPhillipWoodturning
      @AndyPhillipWoodturning  7 лет назад +8

      Well spotted . I set the peices wrong it needs a quarter turn and the black square will be on left .. thanks 👍

  • @B-raddesigns

    I figured it out. The outside frame is uniform to the size of the square one decides to have. For me I’m going with 2” squares so 2x8 = 16” for my two corners, then 14”,12,”,10”,8”,6”,4”,2”. The inside pieces don’t have to be those measurements, you can use 4” pieces and ca glue them to the wood and adjust heights to what ever you desire for your 3-D effect.
    It’s suck a awesome project thanks!

    A fun but very challenging chessboard to make is one where you make the grid on the surface of a slab of wood which has a natural side rather than being square from cuts (think a tree that was hollowed out by fire). It's tough to find the right piece and make flat spots that flow but it's a pretty neat idea.

    redesign the game. pieces in order from top to bottom, left to right. queen. bishop, bishop. knight, king, knight. rook, pawn, pawn, rook. pawn5x. pawn 6x. all pieces can make the same moves but now..... there is a highground. when a pawn meets a pawn diagonally, he may take the opponent pawn but... the opponent gets to dice roll for a number the attacker calls. if it matches or is higher then the opponent gets his piece back starting at low square 1 or next available square. a knights L shaped move is twice as deadly when coming downhill on opponents piece. 1pawn plus the targeted piece are taken if there is a pawn within 1 square of the landing. same as if he attacks uphill. the victim gets a dice roll to avoid losing their piece completely. its the players goal to get queen to the other peak while keeping 4 prime pieces on home peak. or... get the king to one peak and the queen to the other without losing all your pawns. a complex spin on it... but super fun.

    Very nice look and creative attitude :) - lastly i have also seen the pencil vase :).
    But remember - A1 on a chess board - the place you put the left (Queen's) white rook is black :) - on the screen the pieces are put not in order. But of course chess have ebony/ivory symmetry and it doesn't matter for the position which field has which colour. On the other hand in Holy-wood they always put A1, erronously, as a light field :).

      no worries, if you ever need guidance starting a small business hit me up, I'm sure most of the youtube community would be quite supportive too. And don't worry about the cost of small runs (small freight shipping), that's usualy at the expense of the distributor and eventually compounded into the cost of the customer.

      Thanks .. Do you mean the ca glue I used to glue the blocks together ??

    • @BigTull655
      @BigTull655 7 лет назад

      Yes, and some assembly glue dries to a very hard state almost like glass and are difficult to clean off. The chess board being intricate in design, the clean off must have been a problem. And of course if the glue is not cleaned off properly, it shows through the sealer and top coat.

    • @AndyPhillipWoodturning
      @AndyPhillipWoodturning  7 лет назад

      The glue didn't cause a problem really I used a small amount of CA on each piece but where it wouldn't be visible then before I put the base on i coated the underside with a thick pva glue just as a back up really and to give it a bit more strength .. cheers
