Another great solution is to chuck the box as hard as you can from a tall building. Opened immediately for me when I was in a fit of rage. 10/10 would recommend.

That's exactly how I would have done it - lol. But I can't do these things. My mind just doesn't work that way, much though I wish it did.
(I've tried to teach it using various styles of puzzles and the like. The only thing it got me was frustrated. Lol. My thought process simply does not go in that direction...)
Maybe, as the false dovetail joint is so badly damaged on one side that you can see it slides diagonally. However I would guess it is more likely he let his children play with it or accidentally dropped it after solving it.

The dovetails are an illusion. The point of the puzzle is to make you assume the dovetails go straight through and that they're all 90 degrees perpendicular to each other.
The parts actually slide apart on a diagonal. The little marble is just there to lock the puzzle temporarily. :)

Seeing the style of the box, I already thought that it was designed diagonally.
Puzzle boxes are like magic, full of misdirections.
I imagined the diagonal slots immediately, but the magnet and steel ball is a nice touch. Nice solve as always, keep it up!

Not really a fair puzzle, since you don't have all the pieces. You don't know what mechanic is holding it together inside, and there is no way to deduce it either. You literally have to try everything on it until something happens, which isn't very much of a puzzle.

I love these kind of puzzles, so ingenious!!
I made one of these out of aluminum. It uses a spring loaded detent ball to keep it centered and offer a little resistance to movement. I really like the tricky ball catch though. Good stuff.
They are pretty useless if you don't have drugs to hide, judging by some of the comments.

There are enough non magnetic alloys and metals.
The problem is with your chipped puzzle is you can already tell how you have to move the parts without doing anything.
Mr.Puzzle they could use a nonferrous metal.

its not really a puzzle though is it? those are hidden mechanisms...its like telling someone to open a door without a key. yes, you'll open the door, but so can a guy with a hammer. Not really a brain exercise. Unless you intend to make it one for your own amusement. Which is clearly what this guy did.

I've been watching woodworking videos, and transparent paint made me laugh! Usually, it would be called a varnish.
