People seem to forget that the real protagonists of this movie are Adam and Barbara. Beetlejuice is a secondary character, and he has a lot less screen time. Michael Keaton steals the show, yes, but the plot does not revolve around him but around Alec and Geena.
Yep, the movie was going to be called “The haunted house”, was more appropriate but so gerenric
Beetlejuice is the antagonist but yeah the protagonist are Adam, Barbara and Lydia
Greatest movie of all time 1988
Beetle Juice is the antagonist. The reason the marketing revolves around him is because Keaton stole the show. They knew he would be everyone’s favorite character and part of the film.
Agreed 😇😇
This movie is so unique and charming. I also love the idea that a young, beautiful couple dies tragically but everything turns out to be just fine in the end. This will always be one of my favorite movies
have you read your hand book for being recently deceased?
I love the subtle indication that either Barbara or Adam were sterile (I get the feeling from how hurt Barbara looked at the comment she miscarried at some point).
It’s not only interesting character development but strengthens their relationship with Lydia as surrogate parents.
?
@@delete---7593 00:48
so i've always wondered about that...was there any confirmation that either them are sterile or was it just that they didn't want kids?
@@astroboi86 Adam mentions trying again, so I think they attempted but failed.
@@astroboi86 They definitely wanted kids
This film is just iconic. No sequel or whatever could beat it ❤️
Totally! The Wizard of Oz of our time!
How about a fight with the ghostbusters
❤❤❤❤
Yup, this will always be my favourite film :)
.🤔😑.
I think the most horrifying aspect of this movie, other than Mrs. Dietz's so-called remodel, is the fact that someone, despite their constant assertions, was trying to the sell the house out from under them
this house is to big I love it
Exactly what I was thinking ❤
People say the Beetlejuice snake scene was scary, but for me it was when the Maitlands died. They died so sudden and without warning. Plus, they didn't pass away in a quick way either, considering they drowned. It was just so ominous that death could happen at any moment when you least expect it.
At least they were together, even in the afterlife, I mean how bad could it really be, if you still have your true 🧀 Love ?
When I was 8, I knew a couple like the Maitland's, the Tumineas, and they had a 9 year old son, both parents died in a horrible automobile accident, years later, I saw the son, he was now a Police Officer, I asked if he was Frank and Phyllis son, he said yes, and I told him how their loss was something I never got over.
The look of pure hatred from him was scary, down to this day, I wondered how he did not shoot me right then and there.
But they were very nice people.
Could have hit their hits on the roof & died instantly when the car hit the water.
@@wildcat8797 That's what I thought too, otherwise they'd remember the struggle (maybe).
You make an excellent point. I thought the scariest scenes were Barbara tearing her face off, the exorcism scene and the scene when Barbara and Adam were morphing their faces into freaky monsters.
@@carminemurray6624 Sounds like their son had issues. That's too bad.
Idk why but the line from Alec "Handbook for the recently diseased" kills me every time 🤣
5:49 Adam: "Hand book for the recently diseased"
Barbara: "Deceased"
I wonder if he really did say it wrong like that and they just kept it in the movie.
My husband was today years old when he found out that they were dead for the majority of the movie. Like, I understood the concept that they were ghosts from the age of four or five years old. I was like, "Don't you remember they got into that car accident on the covered bridge, and drown in the river/creek?" He completely forgot that part of the movie. This was one of my favorite movies from my childhood.
I didn’t understand it because I was kid when I watched it later as a adult I got it completely and gets getting funnier ever time I see it
@@luisvilla799 My husband didn't realize that they were dead because he thought that their car accident was survivable. I mean, maybe... Those older car doors were hard to open while not submerged in water. He thought they survived 😂
Alec Baldwin looks so kind! he’s unrecognizable lol

I always thought that she's so pretty ☺️ That movie is just iconiccc
Oh she’s got that classic, housewife beauty. The kind that says “I’m casual with my makeup, but I’m only highlighting what’s natural.”
agreed with both
She has a chin like a man lol
Did anyone noticed the dog's fur color was black and white the same colors as Beetlejuice's suit? Maybe it was a subtle hint that Beetlejuice somehow manipulated events in his favor to cause the Maitlands to crash.
😂 🙄🍪
"Functional Perimeters vary from manifestation to manifestation."
Essentially, each haunting is different and each ghost only gets a specific area to dwell in, you go outside those perimeters, you break over into the world of the dead as you can only remain in the living world in a place where your particular manifestation (or haunting) can exist. For the Maitland's, it's their family home as it is the place that means the most to them.
Also: "The Living often ignore the strange and unusual."
I always wanted to read the handbook
The only basics for the Maitlands was to accept the fact that they were not longer alive.
Love how he goes to the obituaries to find a job lol!
I wonder what payment in exchange for services rendered would be.
@@javaman7199 the reason he offers his services as a bio exorcist is so they summon him and free him
These 2 had amazing chemistry.
😊
One of the coolest and most charming movies ever made. This is what made Tim Burton a legend and Keaton was iconic along with Winona Ryder and the whole cast in general. The music, characters, style and just whole feel of the movie was unique. I do hope they make a sequel one day that is worthy.
just trim it a little🤣🤣🤣
Adam: 2 weeks at home. The perfect vacation.
Covid: Hold my beer.
tWo wEeKs tO sLoW tHe sPrEaD
I also like how the music was taken out when Adam puts the tape in the player, makes him look delightfully insane.
yeah lets take it slow
It's creepy and mysterious but a awesome entertaining movie, they don't make them like this anymore
Fun fact:
Around the time that this movie was released, I was seeing a personal trainer in a small gym on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood. One time I was there, my trainer pointed out Geena Davis, who was with her personal trainer. In the parking lot in back was her car, a Volvo station wagon with an Amnesty International sticker on it.
The same one as in the movie? Man I love that car design.
wow after 30+ years i just realized Adam can't read.....love this movie!!!
More like the book is not very specific
We have the same profile icon bro! 🎉
The fact that I’ve watched this movie so many times, I actually understand what the handbook is actually saying. In layman’s terms, 6:37 boils down to where and how long a ghost is bound to the area they haunt differs for everyone.
In other words, you can haunt this place where you died as long as you like, depending on who you are, until you go to your proper afterlife.
Seems simply easy to understand, but too bad the handbook is written by dead bureaucrats.
Barbara is one of the best characters in my opinion
That was when Geena Davis was at the height of her career. I loved her and her ex husband Jeff Goldblum in The Fly, and of course, Thelma and Louise.
I just wished the couple would've lived longer...very interesting how they interact with the town sorta Funny farmish
This movie is such a classic 💓
Indeed
Yes, it surely is !
Ghost was another.
I'm so excited hubby & I are dressing up as Adam & Barbara for a Halloween Beetlejuice party tonight!!🎉
have fun!
You know what? I think Michael Keaton would've made a wonderful Darth Sidious! That evil laugh. That voice. PERFECT! 😆
Geena Davis is so adorable 😍
Her 👗 in this movie is beautiful
Tim Burton is a Genius , one of a kind ♥️🙏
yeah he made a lot of great movies
One of my all time favourites, I love this film from the 80s.
"Don't send pictures of our house." I don't think Barbara would like living in '22.
you know what @exbronco I don't think we survived the crash
I do love actress geena Davis always have
Those two are SO BEAUTIFUL
did anyone else notice that on the back of their station wagon, there's a bumper sticker that says "I brake for Animals"..... The irony of that bumper sticker is killing me and even though the only time you can get a decent look at it is if you pause after the car falls into the river, the people who made this movie were geniuses for those who actually took the time to look at it.
Theres a wonderful warm feeling I get from watching classic 80s movies.
Barb, honey. We're dead. I don't think we have much to worry about anymore. Not funny if it was for real, but hilarious delivery 😂
I really hate how the musical treats Adam and Barbara as boring characters; they really are such a likable couple with charismatic personalities.
It’s funny that the picture of them in the neitherworld’s newspaper they appeared with the same clothes they were wearing when they died 😆
bet i watched this 100 times on VHS when i was a kid
6:07 “You know what? I don’t think we survived the crash.”
I can definitely picture Maniac Magee’s parents (as ghosts) saying that after drowning in the P&W trolley crash in Bridgeport, Pennsylvania.
he's still talking to himself 🤣
I LOVE THIS MOVIE SOOOO MUCH
I love how the tape music is gone in the RUclips version. I get that it's obviously due to licensing. I still hear it in my head though... Seen it about 167 times......
This clip was uploaded by Warner Bros though who has the rights to the movie. They must of just gotten the rights to the song for the movie and then gave them back
"And it keeps getting funnier everytime I see it!!!"
@@blackstrawberry8923 "Not to mention the fact that you're talkin' to a dead guy! Now, what do you think?! Do you think I'm qualified?"
This movie is awesome. Specially the music from Harry Belafonte. ♥
its not Danny Elfman?
@@Joshcoshbagosh Harry Belfonte wrote Day-o and Jump in the Line which are the songs with lyrics. The rest of the music was written by Danny Elfman

If there's never a Beetlejuice 2, I would like to see something in that Universe, maybe a different story and characters and "Handbook For The Recently Deceased" could be the film's title.
Im sold already thats a dope title
They did want to make a sequel with all the returning cast and it was supposed to be set in Hawaii where they all go on vacation! (: Something like that
@@sassygirl4728 Yeah I heard about that. It was a terrible idea lol. I am glad they didn't make that. They could have made a sequel and explored more of the afterlife, while keeping the same cast with a few additions. Maybe the parents get kidnapped by Beetlejuice and taken to the afterlife. Lydia, Barbara and Adam have to rescue them. Anything but Hawaii! They waited too long, so I really think their only shot is to make it the same Universe, with a new story.
@@sassygirl4728 that would’ve been trash ngl
Diseased, lol 😁
Love this movie !!!
Either Adam and Barbara are in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, or they went somewhere at peace, hopefully their peace is the case.
they simply wont be the focus in the new movie, in the original they were the protagonists we saw everything from their perspective but in the new movie it will be from lydias
remember in the original where adam and barbara met with juno for like 5 minutes and when they got back to the house it had been a year? from lydias perspective we dont see the 5 minute meeting we see the one year absence
The windows of the car were open, as if they couldn't swim out lol
And they were like 6 feet from the edge of the water.
They did have their seatbelts on in the car, and usually if a person falls in a lake/River/ocean, etc. in any car or truck and is wearing a seal belt, the seat belt buckle will be jammed because of the water, the water will go into the buckle and jam the seat belt and buckle, so you can’t get it off
Look how high they felt down, maybe that’s what killed thed
@@royalzavala8545 always have a knife
4:45 I always wondered how they did that effect. Now I'm realizing it's a prop hand

That was quite the crash for 3 miles an hour.
Haven’t actually been in a crash I see? Or if you have you were either blacked out or loopy from whiplash.
The handbook of the recently deceased aka the employee manual for the Department of Motor Vehicles
Top comment.
I guess business was going bad at that barbershop which is why that barber named Bill asked Adam if he needed a haircut from 2:41-2:43 even though he was closed for the day and I guess Adams goes to that barbershop having his business next door.
Greatest movie of all time. 1988
This movie is a spectacular actually have the feeling for a sequels.
Dr. strangelove Tha Maitlans must have been Casper’s parents
@@leociresi4292 Unless you are referring to the Casper comic books were Casper is born as a ghost to ghost parents then maybe but if are referring to the 1995 film “Casper” the story is a bit different. When Casper was a alive boy his father was a scientist who died after Casper died and Caspers mother died before Casper did if I remember right.
There’s a sequel going to be filmed this summer.
Jane is so appallingly rude.
I seriously didn’t get her deal, why was she constantly trying to sell their house?!
She knew about the couples baby troubles so she must be close, so what close friend would behave like her?!

So...what happened to the hardware store after the Maitlands died? It’d be interesting to know what happened
There was probably a liquidation or a town auction ran that's what happens when people with business die without a successor
bloodyrose1985 It probably came with the sale of the house or The Deetz’s bought it separately because in a later scene Charles saids that he wants to put an insect zoo “in the old hardware store”
When Charles is giving his presentation towards the end, he mentions potentially building an insect zoo where the "old hardware store" used to be
It's now a Starbucks

The Cat in the Hat, The Boss Baby, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Madagascar 2 Escape Africa, Thomas and the Magic Railroad, Cats and Dogs,.and Arctic Dogs.
He was a host on “Match Game”, I believe.
I'm guessing Barbara couldn't have kids or miscarried and now can't have them.
Watching this clip reminds me what a hottie Geena Davis was back in the day.
Sometimes I think the real estate agent wanted them to just Disappear. Pay close Attention how she snoops into their property with no permission. Also she keeps telling them to sale the house with a bigger family. She continues to beg them & how much money the guy from New York is willing to spend. She was wishing BAD on them all along to get payed.
