her first performance on letterman was nice, but you could tell she was really nervous. it makes me feel really warm inside that she was given the chance to come back on a couple of years later and show people what she can really do, because she totally owns the stage on this one.
Since no one has talked about it-- I love what she's wearing. Very quirky, very British. :) she's a great singer and a great songwriter. I like her music a lot.
she in an artist. yes, its programmed, she has an echo button, repeat, fade, while she sings and plays the piano, sure a band would be better, but its not needed. she does it all in the moment.
Great talent, awesome song. I'm a new fan from this. I would listen to this as an instrumental, that's the mark of a great song, but the vocals give you a glimpse of life like great writers do, and of course it's the rare magic that puts a great song and great words together.
Imogen Heap has one of the best minds as in song writing and really makes me smile. She ahas inspired me to start singing a lot more and write little songs in my head and sing them. Her songs are so unique that if anyone tried to make a parody they would never make a good one that would ever get caught in my mind Really Your youtuber: Yoshi
I saw this, too, and she was unforgettable. She sings, "I'm not that much fun to be with..." but who among her fans wouldn't be happy to find out? She charmed Letterman. She charms most of us who clicked on this video.
INcredible!! Wow ive been listening to her for years but had not come across this and seen her 'process' of creating these sonic soundscapes. Mmm lovely :-)))
How in God's name can ya dislike this type of engineering, creativity, originality, and self contained completeness of Imogen Heap. Some people really have their head up their ass !!!
Letterman certainly can be rude, but I don't think he's being rude here. His "Wow!" sounded unguarded and spontaneous; he seems really impressed with her. And, honestly, who wouldn't want to have dinner with Imogen Heap? She's fascinating.
+alyxxxify All you precious people on here whinging about how MEAN Dave was. He said he wants to fly to UK to have dinner with her. Because he's impressed so that it doesn't actually matter what they eat, as long as he's in her company. Y'all would realize that if you weren't so wringing your hands so hard...
Yeah...I don't think he was joking about having dinner with her :-) definitely appreciated her music, even if it's different from his usual tastes, perhaps. If only she can get him out of Montana now lol.
beautiful performance...I wonder if she will get better from this point. I like her new stuff but doesn't compare to this. I really hope to see her live...everything she does sends shivers all over.
I like her a lot and this is a great song; thanks for posting it. I just wish she'd have played it with Letterman's band rather than preprogramming it all. It would be so much better with live musicians (especially musicians as good as that band is).
She's a gift to us, lucky us to live in the times she's blooming creatively. I do think of Cindy Lauper and maybe another few who didn't stop themselves from creating their looks as well as their music and were looked down upon as being excentric, not serious musicians and all. But Imogen seems to do well so far ;-) (and she certainly seems to have the same bravery and independence to not give a shit what people think of her, I'm not worried...) I really hope she's there to stay for a long time.
@brinkmusic Yes, you're right. And for the people posting comments here that have no CLUE how they work, each button is programmed via software to produce different sounds, trigger different pre-recorded tracks, and/or even a series of them. Hitting one button can trigger a series of different sounds simultaneously, or only one sound or beat, depending on how you have programmed it. I wish people would bother to educate themselves before making comments that just making themselves look stupid.

This is what I need to learn how to do, especially if I can't find musicians to back me up. I just love these electronic synth effects. A lot of my new songs involve my laptop, but I play guitar, so it would have to be done like TNAF.
I love how she combines her MIDI work on her laptop with an acoustic piano. I could do something similar w/ my guitar/midi music, if I can't find some real musicians, but I will. 2015 or bust!!!
@OnychaHazel I can see whereas that MIGHT be true. Even though the programming (somewhat akin to keymapping, as you know) is done via software prior to using the monome...you still have to trigger it with the monome. My point was this...you can program a SERIES of beats or measures to one button. Isn't it possible that it "continues playing," as you said, because it was programmed as several measures to trigger with ONE button push for that specific part of the song?
Not enough people know and appreciate Imogen Heap. Her music is so different, and theatrical. And her creativity is just off the charts, as in "Minds Without Fear"- ruclips.net/video/61o25egU5c4/видео.html Her voice is unusual and lovely/ethereal at times, yet her CD iMegaphone showed her (if you could call it that) "harder" persona through songs such as "Getting Scared". Her early command and embracing of technology (incorporating a tenori-on, ffs) is also amazing. She took to tech early and immediately showcased it on, "iMegaphone" (an anagram of Heap's name-- she's even creative there!) and later with her "Mi-Mu gloves"- ruclips.net/video/ci-yB6EgVW4/видео.html Honestly, songwriter, singer, producer, collaborator, one-half of of the wildly successful and stellar in it's own right, Frou Frou....what an amazing woman!
@OnychaHazel Actually...having watched it AGAIN...I think what I said is correct. She has a part she plays on the keyboard following what you're referring to...watch it again. Personally, to me, it looks like she has a loop programmed there that she hits and THAT is why "it keeps going" even though she's not continuing to hit the beats "in real time." Watch again and see if you see why I say that....
@OnychaHazel Ahhh...yes, this time I caught that extra beat you're seeing. Hmm. It is a different drum synth she's playing beat by beat manually, than the looped beat, but...I do see one extra beat of that drum synth AFTER she stops hitting it, so...you might be right! But...it doesn't make me love her any less. :) Her music rocks my world...regardless of all the technicalities. =D
@wilmothg I think some of the people posting comments here, don't have a clue what that "little red lighted machine" is...lol. They seem to think it's a drum machine. No accounting for people that don't know how to read, research, or learn, is there? Good comment you had. :)
saying that you think that Imogen should have had paul's band back her up is negating her amazing talent. while you may not have any ill intent, her music is her craft...much like saying that you love jackson pollock you wish he would have used ms paint so he didn't make such a mess. i've learned not to question the beauty within the talent.
Why are you distorting what I said? I wasn't questioning anybody's talent; only saying that I'd prefer this song less tech-aided for a live performance. You're perfectly free to disagree with that, but creating offense and suggesting I'm demeaning her is ridiculous. And analogizing by saying I'd like Jackson Pollock to be more tech-aided? Good grief.
+P2/L1 The train which takes her home to pure consciousness... unbounded by the dissapointment and limitation of this broken world we live in. At least thats my personal take on it. But thats what's great about great music, it's not about what they intend it to mean, it's about what it makes you feel and think of. That's what it means... It mean's different things to everyone, but all perspectives are correct whom enjoy this remarkable woman's talent for playing on our heartstrings with her sound. :-)
+Paul Vibert Looking way to deeply into it. She went out with some friends and just had an awkward moment that night and got in a weird mood, went home and wrote the song about it. It wasn't some epiphany that she meditated about about the human condition. She really did just have a bad night. She says so herself in the video link ill post. On the other hand she knows we can all relate to it in our own way and I agree, it means different things to everyone.
+Paul Vibert Also this link I provided may be one of the most emotional, raw, and beautiful versions that I have ever heard of this song. It is simply masterful.
@OnychaHazel I can't help it...I adore her. :) And no, I don't think she's perfect, what human being is? However...I've watched this a few times now, and either you OR I could be right....guess we can't know for SURE, can we? lol ;)
her first performance on letterman was nice, but you could tell she was really nervous. it makes me feel really warm inside that she was given the chance to come back on a couple of years later and show people what she can really do, because she totally owns the stage on this one.
this woman is a true creative and musical genius. To be so lost in the song whilst still handling the technology is truly breath-taking
I can't think of something that I can respect more than using a fine grand piano, voice, and synth pad in such a lovely mix.
Her use of piano in this performance makes me wish the album version were more like it. It's just... so wonderful.
Just listen to this one
Imogen kills it, every time. So talented ...
Such a stunning performance, Letterman has a great ear for good music 🙂
Since no one has talked about it-- I love what she's wearing. Very quirky, very British. :) she's a great singer and a great songwriter. I like her music a lot.
FIRST train home.....
Music is the medium through which Imogen so beautifully swoops, dives, and swims.
So cosmic, so atmospheric, so divine, I love Imogen Heap and how she can never cease to amaze me!
How can one person have soooo much talent!!
AMAZING...............I've loved her for years................... simply
AMAZING
I love how she samples her own voice and then layers those samples in the background.
bad ass song one of my favorites
she in an artist. yes, its programmed, she has an echo button, repeat, fade, while she sings and plays the piano, sure a band would be better, but its not needed. she does it all in the moment.
No ... this is perfect the way it is...
Awesome ... Imi always puts so much 'feeling' into her music ;-)
Great talent, awesome song. I'm a new fan from this. I would listen to this as an instrumental, that's the mark of a great song, but the vocals give you a glimpse of life like great writers do, and of course it's the rare magic that puts a great song and great words together.
You're in luck as she released the CD with an accompanying CD of instrumentals of each track!
@@grahamball9375 Yeah, we got the album, I like the instrumentals equally well, again, the mark of a talented composer.
Imogen Heap has one of the best minds as in song writing and really makes me smile. She ahas inspired me to start singing a lot more and write little songs in my head and sing them.
Her songs are so unique that if anyone tried to make a parody they would never make a good one that would ever get caught in my mind

I cant not stop listening to this song!! She is amazing!!
*First* train home...
Brilliant performance. I love the climactic synth part that comes in at 2:56.
I still LOVE this arrangement of the song.
The 7 dislikers must have missed the last train.
They probably got on the first train home as that's actually the title of the song. =0)
How in God's name can ya dislike this type of engineering, creativity, originality, and self contained completeness of Imogen Heap. Some people really have their head up their ass !!!
This aired august 28 2009 I remember
just beautiful.....
Beautiful!!! luv this too!!!
I love the title of this video.
She´s great!!! full talended
I'm sad because the volume seemed kind of low. Love her. She's AMAZING!
Magnificent! She has a real Thomas Dolby quality to her work!
Letterman certainly can be rude, but I don't think he's being rude here. His "Wow!" sounded unguarded and spontaneous; he seems really impressed with her. And, honestly, who wouldn't want to have dinner with Imogen Heap? She's fascinating.
jackal59 at the end he seemed a bit rude with the whatever i dont care remark

He said he wants to fly to UK to have dinner with her.
Because he's impressed so that it doesn't actually matter what they eat, as long as he's in her company.
Y'all would realize that if you weren't so wringing your hands so hard...
+ROOKTABULA Nailed it. Thank-you.
Yeah...I don't think he was joking about having dinner with her :-) definitely appreciated her music, even if it's different from his usual tastes, perhaps. If only she can get him out of Montana now lol.
my favorite song. atlas an artist with true talent
This woman is bloody brilliant.
this gal is talented~!
what majesty
She is The Music itself! She need no one to perform her beautiful songs.
beautiful performance...I wonder if she will get better from this point. I like her new stuff but doesn't compare to this. I really hope to see her live...everything she does sends shivers all over.
Brilliant~! And that's not something I say often.
I love her piano piece in this version.
True Artist
Spectacular
I like her a lot and this is a great song; thanks for posting it. I just wish she'd have played it with Letterman's band rather than preprogramming it all. It would be so much better with live musicians (especially musicians as good as that band is).

@d12martini the instrument she's using is called a monome

Had the exact same experence of her first Letterman performance :)

If Novation Launchpad and/or APC's are PC, then Monome is a Mac.
Love her hairdos
I love her hair in the official video. So curly...makes me want to cuddle with her, LOL.
It's "First" Train home...
AWESOME!
FIRST Train Home is the title, not last train home
I wonder how hard it would be to make the CMI FAIRLIGHT V easier to transport between gigs without it getting broken BTW Ilove this very beautiful.
Holy shit this is so good!
if goosebumps could kill I'd be dead right now ^_^
She is just brilliant. Incredibly gifted individual. And a lovely person too. Yeah the 13 dislikers are morons.
amazing
i played this side by side with the origanal vid and it is pretty much the exact same except for 2 bits
Are you serious? She's faking them?
She's one of the most talented people alive. Grow up.
Dave wants to have dinner with Imogen ;)
its FIRST train home not last train home

Yep, she does. At least she kept it on float. :)
FYI: this is not her first performance on Letterman
David Letterman is hitting on Imogen Heap...before millions of people.
luv me some immi!
I received an email saying Imogen Heap is touring World wide in 2018. Anybody else get that email. I would be awesome to finally see her.
I want one of those pads
@wilmothg I think some of the people posting comments here, don't have a clue what that "little red lighted machine" is...lol. They seem to think it's a drum machine. No accounting for people that don't know how to read, research, or learn, is there? Good comment you had. :)
leave the title misnamed.....I enjoy listening to it
@smrsnow i believe it's an ableton controller
Lol add Immi to the list of women Dave's hit on.
Love it but please change the title x
"worldwide leader in pants!" LOL!
@hollyandrea05 I so totally agree!!...

Last train home LOL!!!!
what is the synthesiser thing she has on her knee called?
I like the version without the tracks better but still a grate song.
By the way...the name of this song is "FIRST Train Home," not "Last Train Home." Might want to FIX that, onefm1...you'd probably get more views.
which train home ?? then, thank you for posting, brilliant directing
