Nice review, Mike. It’s really helpful to learn about your experiences with the GF120/4. There are not a lot of actual ‘user experience’ reviews of that lens. I’m looking forward to your follow-up video.
Thanks so much, really glad you found it helpful! Stay tuned! The video will largely be studio focused. Anything you’d like me to talk about with the 120mm?
Killer review! Insane how small that medium frame body is, absolutely a consideration for people who want the benefits of medium frame and want something they don’t have to dread carrying around.
Thanks so much Joe! I had alot of fun making it. I'm spoiled in size with the X Series, i'd imagine lens wise the GFX is def a bit larger than full frame with 2.8 and large aperture lenses. But at at least the body is small!
Good review man can Dan send me a gfx100s also...🥲🥲🥲 LOL also...How's the raw files on M1 now? Adobe is fully optimized on M1 now did you see an improved performance?
Thanks so much Tung! Not sure Dan can hook you up if you are in canada! 😅 Oh yeah. BIG improvement. It's no where near as fast as X-H1 files, but substantially faster. Highly recommend. I'm thinking with a new 16" M1 with more ram and maybe an M1X chip, should be blazing fast to edit gfx100s raws.
Really interesting to hear your take on the GFX system. I've been an X series for the past 10 years and love shooting with my X-T4 and X100V. Lately I've been noticing the artefacts in the shadow recovery part of my workflow when editing and have been bracketing and merging HDRs as a get around. Conscious of the bigger lenses and bodies, how much of a step up would you say it'll be if I go about my street/landscape photography with my usual 1 body+ 3 lenses set up? I've noticed the GF line lenses come with some pretty compact options so really intrigued!
Wow - 10 years on the x-system! Pretty cool. I got the X-T2 (sold when X-H1 came out) in 2018. I love it… Short answer: Ever since I borrowed the GFX100s 3 times… I dont even want to use my X-H1 anymore. LOL Longer answer: Ive been shooting less on a regular basis, but when I borrow the GFX, I shoot non stop for 3 weeks. So its been interesting. One thign I appreciate about the X-H1 and lenses… I can EASILY walk around with 4 lenses. Even a laptop if I have to. Its not too big of a deal. I have the 50-140, 8-16, 23mm 1.4 and 80mm macro. All phenominal lenses… but the detail and dynamic range in the GFX really makes me not want to even use the X-H1. yes there is a time and a place. I was really hoping for a sale on the GFX to make the purchase… but even with the resolution being so much larger, everyone says its overrated and overkill… but man it does come in handy! With the X-H1 i need to VERY selectively crop. Helped me get pretty good at composition. Every megapixel must count. But with the GFX there is wiggle room. It's also a skillset to look at an image and make a killer composition cropping. The gfx is insanely heavier. But honestly, I would prob just take 2 lenses with me max. The 250mm is just insanely big. I did enjoy it, but didnt want to carry it. But I could see myself always carrying the 110 and the 23mm for street work. Feel free to DM me on IG. Would love to talk more.
Thank you for this review. I am considering this camera. I have a quick question on your tether setup in Lightroom. Did you have to use any special software like Aquire or a special plugin to get the camera connected to LR? I was under the impression that Fuji cameras did NOT connect automatically to LR. So how did you do this?!?
My pleasure Janis! You are correct. To connect to LR, you must unfortunately purchase a plugin from Adobe. At least thats what I did - purchased it years back to tether my XH1 to LR. But i did a quick google search to get you the link, looks like you can download for free from Fuji's site? fujifilm-x.com/en-us/support/download/software/tether-plugin-pro-for-gfx/ Either way, you need an additional plugin to do this. It's frustrating for sure. The PRO version lets you live view which is $80. The other $30 version doesn't have a live view. Depending on your setup, you might be able to skip the pro. Check out some of my other videos like the studio headshot or food studio shoot. I talk more about tethering.
Hi Mike, many thanks for the review! Question regarding AF: is it possible to focus manually and get the focus confirmation on the eyes or chosen point?
Glad you enjoyed the review! Yes absolutely! If you have experience with X series cameras like the XH1 or XT4 its the same. You can set to manual focus, and use the focus ring, to select the part in focus. Or you can also select a point and press the AF button in manual mode as well.
It wasn’t bad. I have never used the 50s or 50r before, but I would bet they are a bit better due to the larger pixel density. I was impressed with this camera, but the pixels aren’t very “large”. The amazing IQ does help substantially with low light, especially paired with the 110mm f2.
Hello! Typically I always shoot on either continious focus or manual and use the AF button to pop in the focus. I always pretty much do center priority. Does that answer your questions?
i also shoots gfx i have the 100s and 50r i have 110mm 45mm 32-64mm and 100-200mm the 100-200 on 100mm is a close up lens way better than the 110mm i can tell the 120 has less saturated colors where the 110mm has more saturated colors and contrast in my eyes
@@MikeBanom there are many things that contribute to a good lens but one of them is sharpness this is my order of the lenses I have but remember it is extremely close 1: 45mm 2: 110 3: 100-200mm-32-64mm but again its extreme close in sharpness BUT if i had to glue one lens permanent to my cameras this is my choise 50r100-200mm-100s 45mm
I like your video but there is one thing I notice. Just about everyone who does a video or a review on the camera of any of Fuji medium format camera. They complain about the focusing speed but they come back and say but after all it is a medium format which even doing the digital age are not known for fast focusing and are not meant to be a sport camera. Valid point - it's calling out the obvious, but I still felt it was necessary to be said. As you said, medium format is not known for autofocus, however the autofocus is absolutely better than the X-H1. I love that camera, its my main camera, but I wish the autofocus was better.
