@@jfoster8624atleast I can compliment her writing by saying that despite being so afraid and confused she puts herself together and fights but for kiri it’s like skipping to the end of a series and the mc is just annoying now
I think the worse part of Kiriko's skins is that Tracer got about 30 in the span entire 6 year span of OW1. And Kiriko got two thirds of that in the span of 2 years.
@@dirt_dert_durt No it doesn't. She got TWO THIRDS of Tracer's skins in ONE THIRD of the time. Someone counted the additional skin she got post launch with events (abandoned before Sigma got released), and Tracer from Summer Games 2016 to Year of the Pig 2018, she got 8 skins from events. This is missing the Slipstream and 2018 Pacific skins, plus the launch skins, but that's still 16. In the same amount of time(-ish), Kiriko's beating Tracer with almost 50% more skins than her
i also think the one where she argues w genji about bowlcuts is kinda cute, albeit very lacking in substance. other than those, i can't think of a single line that makes me feel anything but disdain for her at worst, or apathy towards her at best.
Another that comes to mind is Kirikos small talk with Sombra about buying info about the Hashimotos. Its one of the very few that show her cinematic character but even then shes kinda cold
Same happened to junkerqueen in her cinematic. In the cinematic she is this honorable, clever leader and warrior. In the game she is a dimwitted brute with an annoyingly hostile attitude
Even her voice acting in the cinematic is different. I had not really played her til recently and hadn't seen it in so long. When u watched it again I was so confused. But I actually think in game she is funny as hell. I dunno her VA really nails it 😂 but it's weird it is the same character issue. The personalities of Queen and Kiriko are so different.
Junker Queen is wasteland-smart, but in terms of normal intellect, not so much. It makes sense that she's a clever fighter, but not so knowledgable on things like eating vegetables (they're in the wasteland, vegetables would be a luxury, let's be real).
I got called crazy for saying Kiriko wasn't the same character from cinematic to in game. It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one who noticed 🤣 Blizzard saw the quirky and upbeat characteristic and interpretted that as being bratty and snarky. Thats just me tho
@angrynerd4178 I think she's smart like Mauga. Absolutely calculating, but acting way dumber than they are. My evidence is the vast number of times a big brain Queen managed to outplay me
I still genuinely believe. Blizzard employees are held at gunpoint by Kiriko and Mercy mains if another character is suggested to get something new for a season Edit: thanks for the likes and please know I'm not trying to start a war or hate. This is simply a joke
mercy kiri player here. we want a mercy buff and we don’t really care about skins. most mercy mains want skins back (eg the pink situation) anyways summary: blizzard gives these heroes the most skins because they earn the most money 😭
what made me dislike Kiriko's personality was her interaction with Phara, the moment when Phara asks what she is willing to lose, only for her to go: oh Phara-chan, i never lose. its such a cringeworthy line that shows of how little she thinks of others while placing herself on a pedestal, Kiriko comes across as the kind of person i would evade in real life, the kind that fells like they always have to be better then everyone else, when all you want to do is just have a fun and chill moment.
Dude I am in the same boat. I hate Kiriko from a gameplay point, personality point, and lore point. I actually do enjoy the overwatch lore and hers just makes no sense whatsoever. It’s irritating
She is another "magic" character as well. Abandoning the idea of high science Ow was built on even more. Sure you had hanzo and genji's dragons that had no real explanation, but kiriko just flat out says mystical fox god powers. Which just turns the world from sci fi to fantasy.
@@JustaGuy_Gaming even with genji and hanzo you could maje like a head canon saying the dragons are holograms of something like that, but with kiriko you literally can not make anything to try to explain it scientifically
@@marcoricci3936 To a degree, though even with holograms that some how pass through solid objects but still damage people is a bit odd. But yes Kirko is a million times worse. It's a strange turn because before that every thing done in OW was basically science, mostly blamed on Nano machines and the like. Now it's just strait up magical stuff.
I play mostly Pharah, and hearing Kiriko call her _"Pharah-chan"_ and that she _"Never loses"_ at playing basketball always gives me an eye roll. Why does Kiriko play basketball? Why does she care? Why does she consider herself good at it? I don't imagine Hanzo or Genji to care about basketball. And _"Pharah-chan"_ is some anime dub BS.
So let me get this straight. One even when kiriko is nice to one of ya, you still complain. And Two she's not allowed to have a hobby or do you just think that there's zero Japanese people that enjoy basketball?
@@mysteriesmercenary615 Not really, you kind of just got it twisted. When writing a character, especially in a preestablished setting or world, every little detail counts, since they are the things that determine if a character is strong and iconic, or weak and convoluted. Lucio is a great comparison for this, he loves hockey and football. Why? Hockey plays into his skillset in game, and football represents his love for community and his country, shown both in a skin and a whole game mode. Why does Kiriko like basketball, and why is she good at it? Are there any skins indicating that she loves basketball or anything that indicates it other than the one line? In writing, when that happens, it becomes a 'but also' cycle that ruins a character, or worse, the plot. I'll give an example, "Kiriko is a 21 year old living in japan and is a part of a biker gang that fights corruption and criminals as a vigilante. But also she knew the Shimada brothers when they were young. But also she knows spiritual magic. But also despite her good motivation she is snarky to everyone around her. But also she likes basketball and is really really good at it." See what I mean?
They should make it a cleanse/heal only. It could do a burst heal, same area of effect as baps grenades, but no invulnerability or boop. Keeps bap's immortality unique, can still be used like ana self grenade in emergencies and works like an anti-anti. I'd even be ok with it providing a 2sec status protection, without the invulnerability.
100% they knew what they were doing when they tried to make Juno, but thankfully they made Juno really young so degenerates who make goon stuff about her, get dragged by the general Fandom.
The part where he mentioned lore I instantly went to rammatra. Like this man needs more skins, more lore, and more voice lines cause he is a work of art.
He is actually the single best character in OW2 and it's not even close. Kiriko is insufferable, Queen is dumb, Sojourn, Illari, Mauga, and Juno are one-note and boring, and Lifeweaver and Venture are checkbox heroes. No comparison.
@@tau-5794honestly I find Venture, Mauga, and Junkerqueen to be fun characters personality wise. The other ones though… not so much Lifeweaver I feel like he doesn’t have anything going for him. While I hate the term “checkbox hero” as characters like Venture aren’t completely defined by being nonbinary and do not think this fits here because if anything Lifeweaver feels more like an outright gay stereotype than being defined by being pansexual nor does he go around and constantly talk about it to receive brownie points from the community… that doesn’t change the fact he is boring as sin and life grip feels awful to play with or against. He is disconnected from the lore and lacks any real wow factor like Venture’s silliness to make me care about him Illari is so boring that despite NUKING HER PEOPLE I feel nothing about the character. Like, how dya make walking nuke uninteresting??? This character should have soooo much trauma and yet none of it is shown. Like “I slaughtered my entire people by going nuclear via sun magic” feels like a side note and it really shouldn’t. And Sojourn is the most cliche military character to ever exist. She is so boring I cannot even stretch this out any further I stopped playing before Juno dropped, so I have no opinion on Juno Rammy boy is a work of art tho
@beywheelzhater8930 Juno's character is just: She's anxious, and is from Mars. That's it, the only relation she has to any other character is being Mei's friend's daughter and being from a colony made by the same company that sponsored Ball and Winston's genetic modification. If she has an interaction it's either about being clueless about Earth cultures or having anxiety. And let's not even talk about how the personalities of the heroes are so drastically different from their cinematics, Kiriko is supposed to be cheerful and bubbly but instead she acts like a sarcastic and rude teenager, and Queen is supposed to be an effective leader and cunning strategist, but is dumbed down to into a thrillseeking meathead.
As kiriko main I still do agree with most of the complaints about her. Especially with her lore. 1. A large majority of the inconsistencies in her lore could be fixed by just adjusting her age from 21 to like maybe 30 something 2. Instead of her training with hanzo and genji, maybe her mother told her stories of them and she was seeking them out for answers about the hashimoto? (Still full of inconsistencies but could work if you really wanted it too)
I think that aging the Shimadas down 10 years actually works better. Genji and Hanzo had their fight 9 years ago, when they were both of age to possibly take over the clan. That would make Hanzo 31 and Genji 28 at the time, but I think that's a little old for both of them to only then have a feud. 18 would make Genji just become of age yet still be a young and impatient man when he joins Overwatch, with Hanzo also young instead of in his thirties. It also fits just fine with their ages in relation to Kiriko.
man the Cinematic Kiriko vs ingame Kiriko just reminded me of Dva in her short where shes serious meanwhile in the game of 1 she treated life like a video game she was a main character of to an almost delusional degree and barely had a serious bone in her body. I completely understand this guys frustration. edited cause i misspelled cinematic!
god don't remind me. I really hate how blizzard is releasing more racially diverse women but they HAVE to be 20 or under they HAVE to be coomer bait. that isn't a trade off they should make.
Never understood the constant push for her being the Next Overwatch 2 Poster girl. Like Overwatch 1 Tracer made so much sense. She is from overwatch, her colors are themed arround the overwatch logo. Kiriko has nothing to do with Overwatch as of right now. She is not affiliated or a new recruit. She is just Kiriko the ninja girl. Juno could be perfect overwatch 2 poster girl. She is cute, adorkable and funny in her own scared way. She is kinda like new tracer but with opposite personality. She is very unexperienced in life and her adventure to become next Overwatch agent feels like very inspirational continuation of overwatch to the newer generation. Her colors also work well with overwatch logo.
IDK why they didn't just make her older, OW has a lot of Heroes who aged like wine, (Mercy is pushing 40) So it's nothing new for a hero to look much younger than they actually are just make Kiri like 30 or smthing that would drop the age gap between her and the bros by 9 which makes it much more believable
@@courirnorte8137 mercy. why is everyone acting like gooners care about ages and that 30 is unfuckable? literally don't even change her model and just say she's 30.
they forced kiriko into the Shimada brothers lore, the ages between the 3 of them DOESNT MAKE ANY SENSE, it makes her feel like she's someone's OC that they inserted into OW. They gave her accurate hitboxes close to her character model, meanwhile everyone else gets an oversized hitbox. She has cleanse, teleport, self heal, wall climb, fast/high damage and healing with an ult that BUFFS all of that. she gets skins every season, i think she only had ONE season where she didn't receive a single skin( poor kiriko mains were probably starving). and she also gets a BUNCH of concept art for future skins... man i know its not that serious but its annoying seeing this fictional ass character get sooo spoiled lol EDIT: i made this comment before watching the video and holy shit i basically repeated the exact same thing because its so OBVIOUS that blizzard is doing this 💀💀💀💀 however her projectile being as big as bowling balls was new and made me hate this character more lol
They literally could've been like ''oh they are Genji and Hanzos younger cousin'' or like just make her older and say ''the Kitsune slows her physical appearance'', speaking of the Kitsune they never explained how it worked. The devs confirmed before (this was back in OW1) that there's no magic so I'm just gonna assume she stole some sort of teleportation device from the Hashimoto similar to how Sombra stole her translocator. But then again she teleported as a tiny child back in her cinematic so..... she's just built different? i can MAYBE understand her Ofudas, like they just have Biotic healing infused with them and the kitsune is just a holographic pet that she controls idk man
I think the "no magic" rule has kinda been abandoned by now. Even with Hanzo and Genji, it would be kind of dumb to say that the dragons are strictly tech, since "only a Shimada can control the dragons" and how would Genji even still be able to do it? Hanzo's at least come out of his tattoo, so maybe there's some sort of proprietary Shimada subdermal hard light construct that explains it, but Genji is completely covered with metal, not to mention missing limbs with probably a majority of his skin burned off, he should (by the tech explanation at least) not be able to use the dragons and yet he does. So far, only the Shimadas and Kiriko appear to have any affinity with magic, though Zenyatta is possible depending on how supernatural the Iris and omnic souls really are.
I assumed that the shimada blades contained hard light projections that could only be released by a shimadas DNA, which would make sense as to why only shimadas can use them
They could've explained her slower aging and teleportation as the result of an experimental implantation given to her as a child due to a disease. The implantation works like the opposite to Tracer's Chronal Accelerator. Rather than anchoring her at a solid moment in time, the machine uses a quantum algorithm to forcefully shunt her through time to ensure her survival. When she grew up, she's given some kind of device to let her control it and live a normal life, but the way it works is by locking her own time at that exact moment.
@@tau-5794 i like to believe the dragons and fox are hardlight constructs with the conciousness of the ancestors uploaded to it so they can watch after their descendants. Like the green and blue dragons were some great ancestor/uncle of the family who, as soon as the tech became available decided they will watch over the the future generations. Problem is ow isnt that far in the future supposedly so they aint even that old. so it takes away from my theory's mistique
@@tau-5794 the Iris is probably a bona fide deity for the sole reason that Sigma, a non-Omnic, states in voicelines that he has not only seen the Iris but interacted with them.

oh you nearly killed your brother with a sword so you swore to never use it out of hate for yourself and regret? heh i dont care cuz im a little shithead
besides the ideas of kiri literally being an oc, i feel she was made in mind of having a cute sugoi japanese girl who can kick butt who just happens to be of age so people could goon and her marketability. she kinda reminds me of the whole yandere sim development nightmare in that way but idk. no hate towards kiri players i just don’t like how she feels like she overshadows the other og female characters (especially tracer 😔)
A headcanon I came across that not only fits the lore but also her personality and attitude is that Kiriko lies about her age and refuses to admit she’s older than 21
Kiriko in the cinematic: "Kanezaka is under MY protection" - chills, gets me emotional every time, genuine peak OW cinematic Kiriko in the game: "The spring flows anew" - a personality blank space, nothing burger, at best acts like how an 80s sitcom writer would portray a snarky teenager. Its irritating because her visual design is kind of incredible imo, and there seems to be a lot of story meat between the implied tension between different sides of her family (again, her whole fox spirit comes from her dads mom, where the Shimada stuff is from her mother's side) and could be a GREAT counterbalance to the gloomy angst of hanzo-genji stuff. That whole Shimada lore is kind of an Overwatch sidebar from the main action which could allow for a lot of fun stories that don't smash into the main lore as well. But noooo, she is cute and smol and perpetually meta resistant so she gets to be tattooed on the ass of every marketing exec employed by Blizzard/Microsoft.
You guys spent energy being a hater but couldn't spend the energy to understand the quality of the short has nothing to do with my comment. that was genuinely super cruel for them to do, esp bc that was people were upset about the anubis skin fiasco. genuinely felt like a slap in the face to the fans.
Well see the problem is you're using your bear hands. You should be using your bare hands. Though I'm not one to complain since at least here in America we get the right to bear arms.
I'd like to point out that said story she was forced into was then butchered almost entirely for the sake of her. The power of the Shimada Clan was retconned for the sake of her and her family. The Clan, Hanamura, Genji and Hanzo's lore and achievements were discredited for the sake of her and her family. Hanzo, especially, in his recent short story. For example, Hanzo was called a "coward and weak" for leaving a manipulative and abusive criminal family that outright forced him to attack his brother, and then afterwards self-isolating for years to while possibly battling su*c*dal thoughts and severe depression, the constant thought of "I can never forgive myself for letting myself be abused and not trying to stop it until it was too late", and all the while being hunted by assassins. When the Dragons cinematic came around, you'd think Hanzo would improve mentality and start distancing himself from the clan that used him and Hanamura in general, right? Apparently not... Cuz Hanzo's character development was shoehorned entirely, and he basically relapsed into the abusive environment and he's basically stuck doing whatever the clan would've wanted despite them being abusive and treating Hanzo like and object, and his mental health and trauma is made out to be a joke... Why? Well, obviously it's because the writers think being abused, manipulated, and suffering from serious mental health issues apparently doesn't matter if you're a male....
Probably good to remember that Blizzard had a bunch of layoffs and such. A good chance the people who worked on the cinematic character and in-game character *were* actually different people
It's also funny that they 100% made suzu so that wouldn't have to change anti nade from being so damn oppressive making it so now two characters have extremely oppressive abilities
Suzu is not exactly a oppressive skill, given that is a defensive ability with really low offensive capabilities. It still a boring ability to use and face. It's so automatic to use, and gives a lot of free value with a boring ass cooldown.
@@aeni13I think it’s oppressive in the sense that SO many characters have to wait to ult till she uses it, , it’s an ever present looming threat for the opposite team, you can’t just go in and attack and try and make a play if she has it, cuz oops she pressed e, guess you lose, shouldn’t have tried to do anything while she has suzu
@@SamWhite-pg7bj Yes, you are right. It's like waiting a massive cooldown for the entire team. They really should change the immortality to something else.
@@SamWhite-pg7bjThe skill floor and ceiling for overwatch has gotten so low over time that we're ACTUALLY complaining about not mindlessly being able to walk in to "make a play" without considering consequences or repercussions. Junker Queen players, for example, should apparently just be able to press a single button and hit people 50 feet to her left and her right even though she dashes forward with an axe that isn't even that long. It'll hit you from no where near her anyway and be rewarded with massive healing for that while the opposing team can't be healed.
fun fact this video came out 13 days ago from when im seeing it and yesterday they released a trailer for a my hero collab... you were right shes got a new skin
she also walks backwards faster than everyone except tracer and genji. I think they originally gave her the slight speedboost that those 2 have but it got removed but they forgot to adjust the backward speed
overwatch 1 had more marketable characters like genji hanzo mercy widowmaker tracer soldier 76 reaper zombra mei, those characters were the most beloved by fans
I feel like the difference between Kiriko in her cinematic and Kiriko in game is that in the cinematic Kiriko is interacting with people she cares about and in game she's interacting with mostly strangers she barely knows anything about and let's not forget she's a gang member in charge of protecting Kanezaka and gang members are generally distrusting and rude to people they don't care about. The only person she's nice to is Genji because she knows him, Hanzo on the other hand she has a bitter distate to because he abandoned the Shimada empire which led to the Hashimoto taking over Kanezaka. One voice line I like about Kiriko is the one where she says "Look mom, I'm a (overwatch or talon) agent" because it shows her factionally grey side, she'll join whatever team that'll help get rid of the Hashimoto from Kanezaka and from the people she cares about
6:55 I think they should give Hanzo and Genji like a mentorial role to Kiriko, kinda like uncles to some extent (Genji acts kinda like Gojo, Hanzo like Nanami, with Kiriko being Yuji; to put it for the weebs out there). That would be cool I think.
One is a HEADSHOT from a projectile which is easier to react to and dodge than hit-scan. The other is a melee attack with a huge hitbox that you can hit someone across the street with. The amount of times I've accidentally killed someone with blade who wasn't even on my screen is genuinely hilarious. You can't miss a swing. :3
man i really wish overwatch put as much care into the lore of characters as they used to :( i remember being so into the cinematics and the stories in ow1, connecting the lore with the easter eggs in game (voicelines, trinkets in the map, small details in skins, etc) was literally SO MUCH FUN also UR SO RIGHT ON THE VENTURE PART I LOVE VENTURE SO MUCH THE NEGLECT TOWARDS THEM FRM BLIZZARD MAKES ME SO SAD
Likewise. I remember when each new hero or map would have some level of speculation and narrative reasoning. Nowadays, with most of the narrative team laid off, we can only expect a 6-8 page comic discretely posted on their website as anything outside of the expected bio and cinematic.
I think what is most insulting about kirikos skins is the way shes being treated compared to the other new characters, and even some overwatch ogs. Kiriko has more legendary skins than zarya. Who has been in the game since launch. Venture hasnt even gotten a legendary skin yet, and their only non-basic skins are one rare twitch drop and one paid epic skin. Yet kiriko keeps piling on new skins along with mercy and dva because those are the money makers. Other characters are lucky if they get a themed skin in a season, kiriko is unlucky if she only gets one.
Asking blizzard to care about it's characters, story, gamplay balance or... anything they promised during overwatch1 to 2 transition is like asking a leprechaun for his pot of gold.
i hate kiriko so much, shes just an OC inserted into the great lore of overwatch, shes annoying, her design sucks, her skins suck, and she just keeps getting more and more skins. look at roadhog, an og character of course which puts him above basically all new heroes but his lore is so interesting and it has about a quarter of kiriko's guff. and putting kiriko in the ring with the new heroes, shes another lame character to add to the bunch like discount Maui, olive green drill person, or that support with the sun thing. seriously if rammatra wasnt so peak overwatch 2 would be 0 for all on good characters. lore wise and gameplay wise.
Kiriko honestly has to be one of the poorly written characters ever. It’s obvious there was a personality shift but it seems like that was only to copy off more well written characters that were already popular?
They basically copied Diva and Tracer for personality with their snarkiness but literally nothing else after that. There is literally zero personality description for Kiriko other than saying something backhanded
Not only does Suzu make you invincible, it also makes you intangible, which matters for collision based abilities like doomfist’s rocket punch or Reinhardt’s charge. I’ve had multiple times with doom fist where I have an empowered punch and can hit the whole team with the punch but I sail through them when kirko makes then intangible, if they were only invincible at the very least i wouldn’t be out of position and I would move the team back
They should make a Kiriko skin thats called "Matured", where its basically Kiriko in an older state, and have her current skin be how she used to look at that age, kinda like the Ana and her younger skin, i feel like this could decently fix that age gap, by adding an older skin of her that would basically be her present self
They could have had Kiriko be *inspired* by the Shimada. Like, her mother talk to her about then and their story, and Kiri wanted to be like them. Is that easy. But no, she has to be a 5 year old training with dudes in their twenties (the shimada ain't beating the allegations 😢)
As someone with over 100 hours on the character, all these points are true. I do like seeing kiri skins but jesus christ its bad that she gets like 2-3 per season. Also i do wish that her lore made sense instead of being nonesensical bullcrap, cause it's kinda sad knowing a character i like is not given proper care in her lore and voice lines.
I wish OW still cared about its storyline. If the people who worked on the story and the team that worked on the game actually worked together on voicelines and skins and stuff I feel like the game would be at least a little more likeable.
Same thing applies for current dva she’s been extremely over powered for almost 2 seasons yet they barely address it and she gets a lot of skins and collabs like for an example why did dva get a car skin isn’t bastion the beast candidate?, this all ties into your point that cute girls are extremely marketable and make a lot of money, I blame the down bad community for this sad state of affairs
Kiri's age makes no sense at all and ruins the Shimada lore that had been established. I can see if she was a kid that was babysat by the bros but not raised along with them. She should be 31 at least if they're going that route. But having an Asian woman in her 30s would have been seen as 'untouchable' because she would be 'too old'. I wish Kiri being a bitch would be as funny as Sombra's quips, but none of her voice lines come off as less than harmful. Even when asking Genji if remembers when he had a bowl cut had some underlining of trying to embarrass him as she denies she ever had one.
She's fucking Japanese-American what more do you want for her? You want her to talk in broken English? Want her to sound like a generic anime girl from (insert anime name here)?
The cinematic team was likely written by the old guard of Overwatch. Kanezaka came out in 2020, 2 years before the release of OW2 and Kiriko. We got the first teases for this character back when the map came out and the cinematic was likely already in development. In the intervening 2 years, MANY of the original team members left due to poor management from Acti-Blizzard, the horrible scandal that was committed in its c-suit and the slow removal of the lore keepers at blizzard. No one is paying attention to story and Acti-Blizzard, and now Microsoft don’t care as much about keeping story intact as much as building profits and keeping the content mill turning.
The best part is that if you rewatch the old cinematics you actually hear herosounds. Legit either a deathsound, a ability sound or legit voicelines or pre-game story interactions. Also every single world in those cinematics are legit maps. (Hanamura by genji, eichenwald by reinhardt, volskaya by sombra, dorado by soldier etc ) Legit accurate maps. Kirikos dosnt have that. The old cinematics legit made a perfect collab between movie and lore, and gameplay. They surely made not the most money with those but that is standart i miss. Sad what happend
while i agree with all the things you mentioned, i belive the ana and kiri interaction is wholesome, as Kiri is happy that ana (a legend) is telling Kiri that she remind her of herself when she was younger. which is a complement. not in a sassy way
Kiriko should reserve her snarkiness for Genji and Hanzo since it would make sense for her to tease them with them being childhood friends and all (if ofc they fixed the ages) Or they could keep Kiriko younger if they throw away the whole growing up together thing. Maybe she really admires Genji and/or Hanzo since she grew up hearing their stories. Or maybe she has beef with Hanzo for "killing" Genji, we need more conflict amongst characters on the same team.
kiriko frustrates me so much at this point i just wish other characters were allowed a little bit of the spotlight lol...like the most recent short story on the site is supposed to be about hanzo, but because kiriko is in it the entire layout of the story is kiriko's branding - her headband is the image above the start of the story, the accent colour of the pages is her pink. despite the fact the story is about hanzo, and told from his perspective. the official overwatch account hasn't even posted the link to the story despite it being available to read since last month. it was the same for the hammond short story too, so i'm not surprised, but it feels really bad to see them not care this much about their characters while posting constantly about what skins are in the store.
Honestly that's lowkey a valid theory and an idea that I myself pondered about ever since Blizz explained the inconsistency issue with Kiriko's age as "It's normal but I won't tell you why"

The only Kiriko line that doesn't make want to off myself is the one in Eichenwalden, where she show respect to the fallen soldiers. That's it.
The one time where she isnt a snarky prick for no given reason
i also think the one where she argues w genji about bowlcuts is kinda cute, albeit very lacking in substance. other than those, i can't think of a single line that makes me feel anything but disdain for her at worst, or apathy towards her at best.
Another that comes to mind is Kirikos small talk with Sombra about buying info about the Hashimotos. Its one of the very few that show her cinematic character but even then shes kinda cold
The widow one is fun
Widow "Did you do anything fun this weekend?"
Kiri "not much, just sunk a hasemoto boat"
Widow "so another boring weekend"
Same happened to junkerqueen in her cinematic.
In the cinematic she is this honorable, clever leader and warrior.
In the game she is a dimwitted brute with an annoyingly hostile attitude
I know right, it feel soo odd. like the teams that made the cinematics and people writing the dialogue didn't communicate
Literally the few JQ voicelines we got on the Junkertown map in OW1 had better characterisation than the OW2 JQ
Broooo I've been saying the same
Junker Queen is wasteland-smart, but in terms of normal intellect, not so much. It makes sense that she's a clever fighter, but not so knowledgable on things like eating vegetables (they're in the wasteland, vegetables would be a luxury, let's be real).
I got called crazy for saying Kiriko wasn't the same character from cinematic to in game. It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one who noticed 🤣
Blizzard saw the quirky and upbeat characteristic and interpretted that as being bratty and snarky. Thats just me tho
I've noticed it too. Same with Junker Queen. In the trailer she's smart and merciful. In the game she's borderline dumb and just feels like a brute
@angrynerd4178 I think she's smart like Mauga. Absolutely calculating, but acting way dumber than they are. My evidence is the vast number of times a big brain Queen managed to outplay me
Sombra is snarky too but in a fun way, Kiri is snarky in the asshole way which isn't funny
Yes, thank you someone had to say it, her ego is bigger than a five stack of roadhogs and nobody ever checks her on it
In her trailer, her ego is glaring, but at least she was sweet. Her personality in game is just fckn annoying
yeah sombra is playful/sly snarky, kiriko on the other hand is harsh, and thats putting it lightly lol
No one likes sombra
You just can't separate character from playing into her, as a character she's interesting. Playing into her can suck but Kiri is neither of them

We get it you want overwatch to shut down
what made me dislike Kiriko's personality was her interaction with Phara, the moment when Phara asks what she is willing to lose, only for her to go: oh Phara-chan, i never lose.
its such a cringeworthy line that shows of how little she thinks of others while placing herself on a pedestal, Kiriko comes across as the kind of person i would evade in real life, the kind that fells like they always have to be better then everyone else, when all you want to do is just have a fun and chill moment.
You forgot to mention her arm that blocks headshots. That added with he paper thin frame makes her insanely hard to hit when she strafe.
Dude I am in the same boat. I hate Kiriko from a gameplay point, personality point, and lore point. I actually do enjoy the overwatch lore and hers just makes no sense whatsoever. It’s irritating
forgot skins point
Man you should give up, the lore of this game is dead. I hate it too but it's over.
I find that odd because basketball isn't popular in Japan
Cuz she has them big steppers on

The part where he mentioned lore I instantly went to rammatra. Like this man needs more skins, more lore, and more voice lines cause he is a work of art.
He is actually the single best character in OW2 and it's not even close. Kiriko is insufferable, Queen is dumb, Sojourn, Illari, Mauga, and Juno are one-note and boring, and Lifeweaver and Venture are checkbox heroes. No comparison.
ram ignited my interest in the lore again. i wish they never canceled pve so we could see more of what happened after he left shambali
@@tau-5794honestly I find Venture, Mauga, and Junkerqueen to be fun characters personality wise. The other ones though… not so much
Lifeweaver I feel like he doesn’t have anything going for him. He is disconnected from the lore and lacks any real wow factor like Venture’s silliness to make me care about him
Illari is so boring that despite NUKING HER PEOPLE I feel nothing about the character.
She is so boring I cannot even stretch this out any further
I stopped playing before Juno dropped, so I have no opinion on Juno
Rammy boy is a work of art tho
RAMATTRA WE STAN TILL THE END
As kiriko main I still do agree with most of the complaints about her. Especially with her lore.
1. A large majority of the inconsistencies in her lore could be fixed by just adjusting her age from 21 to like maybe 30 something
2. Instead of her training with hanzo and genji, maybe her mother told her stories of them and she was seeking them out for answers about the hashimoto? (Still full of inconsistencies but could work if you really wanted it too)
The real problem I have with it, is the fact that it could be fixed so easily. These are just unnecessary inconsistencies that are so avoidable.
I would understand an adopted uncle aspect for the brothers, but that would be too difficult.
WOW, you just fixed her entire lore within 2 sentences
@@nabongobong9155 not fully but damn.
Kiriko's ingame personality really fits the "brat" architype, which is really popular on some "other sites".
:( stuff like that makes me so sad
god don't remind me.

IDK why they didn't just make her older, OW has a lot of Heroes who aged like wine, (Mercy is pushing 40) So it's nothing new for a hero to look much younger than they actually are just make Kiri like 30 or smthing that would drop the age gap between her and the bros by 9 which makes it much more believable
because if shes old then they loose younger audience with kiriko, who are more likely to buy skins with no hesitation

why is everyone acting like gooners care about ages and that 30 is unfuckable? literally don't even change her model and just say she's 30.
they forced kiriko into the Shimada brothers lore, the ages between the 3 of them DOESNT MAKE ANY SENSE, it makes her feel like she's someone's OC that they inserted into OW. They gave her accurate hitboxes close to her character model, meanwhile everyone else gets an oversized hitbox. She has cleanse, teleport, self heal, wall climb, fast/high damage and healing with an ult that BUFFS all of that. she gets skins every season, i think she only had ONE season where she didn't receive a single skin( poor kiriko mains were probably starving). and she also gets a BUNCH of concept art for future skins... man i know its not that serious but its annoying seeing this fictional ass character get sooo spoiled lol
EDIT: i made this comment before watching the video and holy shit i basically repeated the exact same thing because its so OBVIOUS that blizzard is doing this 💀💀💀💀 however her projectile being as big as bowling balls was new and made me hate this character more lol
Problem is ow isnt that far in the future supposedly so they aint even that old. so it takes away from my theory's mistique

oh you nearly killed your brother with a sword so you swore to never use it out of hate for yourself and regret? heh i dont care cuz im a little shithead
besides the ideas of kiri literally being an oc, i feel she was made in mind of having a cute sugoi japanese girl who can kick butt who just happens to be of age so people could goon and her marketability. she kinda reminds me of the whole yandere sim development nightmare in that way but idk. no hate towards kiri players i just don’t like how she feels like she overshadows the other og female characters (especially tracer 😔)
A headcanon I came across that not only fits the lore but also her personality and attitude is that Kiriko lies about her age and refuses to admit she’s older than 21
Honestly, given how much of an obnoxious brat she acts, that makes far too much sense
Kiriko in the cinematic: "Kanezaka is under MY protection" - chills, gets me emotional every time, genuine peak OW cinematic
Kiriko in the game: "The spring flows anew" - a personality blank space, nothing burger, at best acts like how an 80s sitcom writer would portray a snarky teenager.

For such a popular character you dont see nearly as much fan-content for her as the other popular figures.
Everyone in my friend group thought I was crazy when I called Kiriko a self-insert OC.
Cat came in, looked at cam, cleaned itself and then left
I feel like the difference between Kiriko in her cinematic and Kiriko in game is that in the cinematic Kiriko is interacting with people she cares about and in game she's interacting with mostly strangers she barely knows anything about and let's not forget she's a gang member in charge of protecting Kanezaka and gang members are generally distrusting and rude to people they don't care about. The only person she's nice to is Genji because she knows him, Hanzo on the other hand she has a bitter distate to because he abandoned the Shimada empire which led to the Hashimoto taking over Kanezaka. One voice line I like about Kiriko is the one where she says "Look mom, I'm a (overwatch or talon) agent" because it shows her factionally grey side, she'll join whatever team that'll help get rid of the Hashimoto from Kanezaka and from the people she cares about

also UR SO RIGHT ON THE VENTURE PART I LOVE VENTURE SO MUCH THE NEGLECT TOWARDS THEM FRM BLIZZARD MAKES ME SO SAD
Love how this 21 year old grew up with a 40 year old man and a 37 year old man.
Venture not even getting a skin for the Egypt map is just such a kick in the teeth two, they're getting the middle child treatment from OW
Venture even teased the new Anubis, it's so unfortunate
So basically she's the Yone/Lux of Overwatch, glad to see you guys also have those
Kiriko honestly has to be one of the poorly written characters ever. It’s obvious there was a personality shift but it seems like that was only to copy off more well written characters that were already popular?
They basically copied Diva and Tracer for personality with their snarkiness but literally nothing else after that. There is literally zero personality description for Kiriko other than saying something backhanded
The same goes for Juno she literally looks like a Dva skin
Venture sitting at 0 legendary skins crying in the corner lol
They're so goofy silly I want them to have something
Not only does Suzu make you invincible, it also makes you intangible, which matters for collision based abilities like doomfist’s rocket punch or Reinhardt’s charge. I’ve had multiple times with doom fist where I have an empowered punch and can hit the whole team with the punch but I sail through them when kirko makes then intangible, if they were only invincible at the very least i wouldn’t be out of position and I would move the team back
I heard that Kiriko was a self-insert by 2 different devs and (since they're literally the devs) they can pamper their pet project OC self insert
and now she has a mha collab skin 💀💀💀
They should make a Kiriko skin thats called "Matured", where its basically Kiriko in an older state, and have her current skin be how she used to look at that age, kinda like the Ana and her younger skin, i feel like this could decently fix that age gap, by adding an older skin of her that would basically be her present self
They could have had Kiriko be *inspired* by the Shimada. Like, her mother talk to her about then and their story, and Kiri wanted to be like them. Is that easy. But no, she has to be a 5 year old training with dudes in their twenties (the shimada ain't beating the allegations 😢)
11:21 thank you for exposing the lack of skins for my them
2:08 Kiriko does more damage with head shots now, not less. 60 * 2 = 120, before balance changes it was 45 * 2,5 = 112,5.
Thank you, sorry I’m bad at math
I was disappointed when a child was released on launch. From the lore, I was expecting a 35 year old Japanese woman, not a tiny brat.
As a venture main I feel your pain
She has such potential for cool skins but it's like the devs forgot about her
@@dirt_dert_durtshe's not coomer bait, they dont care
@@sol9059have you seen Venture's thighs?
@@robotictoast65 Are those actually her thighs, or just baggy pants?
As someone with over 100 hours on the character, all these points are true. I do like seeing kiri skins but jesus christ its bad that she gets like 2-3 per season. Also i do wish that her lore made sense instead of being nonesensical bullcrap, cause it's kinda sad knowing a character i like is not given proper care in her lore and voice lines.
Her only good interaction is the one with roadhog and only because of what it does for roadhog's character and not kiriko 💀
The mask one?
She got another 4 skins this season 😭😭😭
10:55 CAT SPOTTED
yes. she has 3 legendary skins this season you are right
the Aldo Tshirt goes hard as f***
This guy gets it
This vid has been recommended at least 10 times in my feed. After watching the vid, I think you deserve more subscribers, man, keep up the good work!
Thank you!
I wish OW still cared about its storyline. If the people who worked on the story and the team that worked on the game actually worked together on voicelines and skins and stuff I feel like the game would be at least a little more likeable.
because most support player think they relate to her by being quirky
Nobody else talks about this but I don’t like the voice actor they chose. It’s not the actors fault but she doesn’t even sound Japanese at all.
She's fucking Japanese-American what more do you want for her? You want her to talk in broken English? Want her to sound like a generic anime girl from (insert anime name here)?
The skins part is just so simple and easy, shes a cute girl, girls love cute girls, men love cute girls. just sells more
The cinematic team was likely written by the old guard of Overwatch.
10:55 Suprise cameo?
The best part is that if you rewatch the old cinematics you actually hear herosounds. Legit either a deathsound, a ability sound or legit voicelines or pre-game story interactions. Also every single world in those cinematics are legit maps. (Hanamura by genji, eichenwald by reinhardt, volskaya by sombra, dorado by soldier etc ) Legit accurate maps. Kirikos dosnt have that. The old cinematics legit made a perfect collab between movie and lore, and gameplay. They surely made not the most money with those but that is standart i miss. Sad what happend
I’m still a proud Kiriko main
Absolutely nothing wrong with that❤️
while i agree with all the things you mentioned, i belive the ana and kiri interaction is wholesome, as Kiri is happy that ana (a legend) is telling Kiri that she remind her of herself when she was younger. which is a complement. not in a sassy way
I really hate her ultimate voice line “LeT tHe KitSunE GuiDe yeww 🤪🤪”
Kiriko should reserve her snarkiness for Genji and Hanzo since it would make sense for her to tease them with them being childhood friends and all (if ofc they fixed the ages)
Or they could keep Kiriko younger if they throw away the whole growing up together thing. Maybe she really admires Genji and/or Hanzo since she grew up hearing their stories. Or maybe she has beef with Hanzo for "killing" Genji, we need more conflict amongst characters on the same team.
They literally buffed her damage Old: 45*2.5=112.5 New: 60*2= 120
3:21 Kiriko is literally mewing in her pfp lol
I FOUND THE PERSON TO WATCH WHILE I EAT AGAIN
kiriko frustrates me so much at this point i just wish other characters were allowed a little bit of the spotlight lol...like the most recent short story on the site is supposed to be about hanzo, but because kiriko is in it the entire layout of the story is kiriko's branding - her headband is the image above the start of the story, the accent colour of the pages is her pink. despite the fact the story is about hanzo, and told from his perspective. the official overwatch account hasn't even posted the link to the story despite it being available to read since last month. it was the same for the hammond short story too, so i'm not surprised, but it feels really bad to see them not care this much about their characters while posting constantly about what skins are in the store.
I have a theory she came from a parallel universe or something else, this is why Blizzard write her completely out of context. (YES I'M DELUSIONAL)
Honestly that's lowkey a valid theory and an idea that I myself pondered about ever since Blizz explained the inconsistency issue with Kiriko's age as "It's normal but I won't tell you why"
First time watcher. Love the editing and the jokes aren't cringe. Good shit, earned a sub.
Thank you, glad u enjoyed
