  • Here it is, at long last...the secret origin of the dreaded Bat Nipple! The video that absolutely no one asked for but, for some strange reason, demanded to be made. For years, I've blamed director Joel Schumacher for the introduction of Bat Nipples in the 1997 feature film, "Batman and Robin". It turns out, however, that Bat Nipples have been around for a much longer period of time that I could have ever imagined. Watch this video to find out more!

Cesar Romero did look like a real Joker from the Comic book. The other Jokers Heath Ledger looked more like Beetle Juice and Jared Leto looked more like a Zombie. Tim Burton was ahead of his time . Tim gave us a deft mixture of fantasy, realism, and darkness with his Batman movies. Thirteen years after the release of “Batman Returns “ Christopher Nolan goes much farther than Tim Burton does. Nolan turns down fantasy, turns up realism and darkness, and gets widespread acclaim and financial success.

It would seem that the “Surf’s up, Joker’s Under” episode may have actually been the first on television to jump the shark, in a sense.
Btw, the recently departed William Smith portrayed a henchman named Adonis in the final episode of Batman”. Would adding this along with appearances on “Bonanza”, “Kung Fu”, “I Dream of Jeanie” and a starring role in the last season of the original “Hawaii 5-0” to those I mentioned in a reply to a viewer’s comment on your recent Charlie Robinson upload get you to reconsider a tribute to Smith?

I wonder if “Surf’s Up. Joker’s Under “ was influenced creatively by the popularity of The Beach Boys’ music during the 1960’s.

The Batman TV series was, obviously, a parody. But a parody of what? Not the "Dark Knight," that's for sure.
By the 1960s, the comic book Batman had evolved from an on-the-edge, borderline psychotic into a simple crimefighter and detective. And criminals like the Joker went from being dangerous--and homicidal--to being, well, silly. Silly criminals in silly suits pulling off silly crimes for no apparent reason.
This was all due to the Comics Code Authority, a self-policing set of principles adopted by the comic book industry under pressure from Congress. Similar to the Hayes Commission in films, the CCA served to dampen the excitement of the comics--and the gore--turning them into something 8-year-olds could understand and enjoy. THAT's the Batman parodied by Adam West.
By the beginning of the 1970s, the CCA was being ignored and the Batman we know--the Dark Knight--began his comeback. This guy is reflected in the movies by Batman versions done by Michael Keaton (still my favorite), Christian Bale, and (though not as effective) Ben Affleck.
Why the third and fourth installments of the Batman movies drifted from the excellent standard set by Tim Burton and the Dark Knight example from the comics, I'll never know. But it did. Val Kilmer's version was tolerable, and Clooney's was just awful. (Even Clooney acknowledges this, blaming himself for taking the role without really examining the script--he wasn't yet Clooney the movie star.)
The nipples? It doesn't matter where they come from. They're just part of the same silly package. Thank goodness Christopher Nolan came along to save us all.

Minor correction, the infamous molded bat-nipples were in Batman Forever with Val Kilmer vs Adam's natural through the spandex which made several appearances depending on California weather conditions during filming. I enjoyed Surf's Up, Joker's Under because of the lovely Yvonne Craig in a bathing suit, seeing Commissioner Gordon and Chief O'Hara as beach combers and the overall fun of the story.

I consider the late Joel Schumacher's Falling Down to be a perfect movie. It's got great characterization and a hell of a twist. And I think that in a way his Batman films were attempts to capture the different eras of the Batman comics. The first two were dark and moody like the first 15 years of Batman. Then the third one was slightly over the top like the Dick Sprang designed props of the era. The fourth one was pure 60's, with Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey invoking the over-the-top villains of the era. Then the Nolan movies invoked the 1970's through to the 90's.
