    How can take a brand new from a showroom and claim it's more reliable without owning the vehicle for 4-5 years

    • @bsjeran7352
      @bsjeran7352 5 лет назад +11

      It's been three years since it appeared, so there has been some time to test it, it has a proven engine that is used in Jags, LR, Citroens and Pugs and that has been upgraded over the years especially in terms of reliability, it has the best 'generic' gearbox on the market... Of course, nobody can claim it will be bulletproof 10 years from now, but that stands for every car ever made.

      @@tovarisch3039 hahaha, nice. Well, even though it's not as simple as 'you're covered for 25 years' (read into it a bit and you'll see what I mean), Toyota is definitely miles ahead of Land Rover in terms of reliability. Nobody ever said otherwise. I wasn't talking about Toyota vs LR in terms of reliability, that would be stupid. I was talking about LR3/4 vs LR5.

    Excellent review, I’m torn between getting defender or discovery. But i liked the comments at the end. The price quickly adds up. But I’m pleased with the review and I will base my purchase if it’s a discovery on this review. This was one of the best review because it answered a lot of questions 👍👍

    Great review Amelia and Car Tell TV. Its good to hear from someone with previous knowledge of the past generations. The Discovery 5 that you tested has the same motor as the LR4 and LR3 other then capacity and a few other slight changes. The Lion Motor is a good motor but JLR skimped out on the quality. That's why I got the petrol LR3. When JLR's new inline 6 Inginiam motor comes out can you please test and compare this? Be interesting to see the difference.

    The 2.0 litre option was created decades back by Land Rover, for the Italian market, due to heavy taxation on larger capacity engines. It remains viable in that market and may also be attractive in other countries with harsh taxes on engines with piston displacement exceeding 2.0 litres.

    Over $130,000 no thanks! That’s where the Discovery has lost market share & customers in a nut shell!!!
    I had the last of the Discovery 4 & Landrover tried to tempt me into the Disco 5, it was going to cost over $20,000 more to get the same specs as my Disco 4 in the new one! So after owning 4 Landrover Discoveries I went to Toyota & spent less buying a dual cab 79 Series Landcruiser that included $30,000 worth of extras, fitting it out as the ultimate RELIABLE touring vehicle. Something that no Landrover will ever be unfortunately. And I can now keep the Cruiser out of warranty & know it won’t cost me the earth to maintain!

    • @PhilShenton
      @PhilShenton 5 лет назад +1

      yeah great compromise.. 80's technology for $80K entry price with bugger all safety other than traction control, ABS and a couple of airbags. Then you need to spend another $30K on suspension, correcting rear wheel track, canopy / decent tray oh and as mine does, use 16L/100K on mostly freeway use 160K's daily. Where as my twin turbo i4 Velar uses 6.3L so I can expect that the Disco with the same or V6 engine will be slightly more thirsty. The 79 is hardly comparable in any way to a Discovery. Horses for courses of course.

    • @jamesgeitz6719
      @jamesgeitz6719 5 лет назад +1

      4x4 Nut no they are not comparable at all? That’s not my point? One is a great 4x4 when everything is working, the other is a truck. I now own a truck! To compare a Discovery to a 79 Cruiser is insane? The point I make is reliability & access to parts & service. A trait that’s more difficult to achieve in a Landrover across the more remote regions of Australia. My other choice was a 200 Series, now then you could run a comparison to the Discovery but not with a 79 dual cab. I’m just saying at $130,000 Landrover have priced the Discovery out of the market? Even the basic 5 seat V6 I priced up was $107,000? Again way to expensive for a Discovery! That’s why sales will have fallen off the cliff!

      I’ve owned many if not every model of landrover
      I’ve had good ones that did 300,000 miles disco 2003 TD5
      Ps still in family
      Range rovers had a issue with 1 only.
      So overall I’ve been lucky with reliability..
      I’m no longer a Landrover owner due to there prices far to expensive..
      They do loss a lot of money also,as I purchased new ones.
      Yes most vehicles loss lots..
      I currently own a Mercedes Vito commercial dualliner absolutely fantastic..
      Loss about £4000 per year.
      Also a Porsche macan GTs for the gaffer in the house lol..
      The Porsche losses about £8000 per year
      The new discovery would loss about £12000 per year
      Based on 4 year ownership..
      I though can’t wait to see the new defender

    4x4’s aren’t meant for cities, and city vehicles should never be taken into the bush to be destroyed. 4x4’s should be cheap and easy to repair, because they will get bashed around in the bush. Fancy looking 4x4’s won’t look to fancy after a couple of rocks and trees hit the side panels. Not only have JLR destroyed the Disco, for those that live in the country, they have destroyed the most capable and tough Defender. It’s a bit ridiculous. That much tech that JLR can’t even maintain it themselves. But I guess they’ll pick up sales with the posh city dwellers that can afford the repairs and maintenance costs and the country people will continue to maintain their old rigs as they always have. Not many sales to be made when people take care of and maintain their own vehicles.

      Bohica Johnson The Discovery has a range of roughly 1,000-1,100 kms per tank. A Landcruiser Prado has roughly over 1,600 km range per tank. This matters when hoing on trips over a few days or weeks. Remember, when towing, the MPG on SUVs drops significantly.

Equally, although I have owned many German cars in the past, I would never have another because they are so boring. Nice review, but why not mention that the Discovery 5 has engine oil dilution problems due to the diesel particulate filter location. This causes reduced oil service intervals, so instead of a 16,000 mile oil change, you might need one every 5,000 miles. I was going to buy a Discovery 5, but this problem put me off. Do your own research, there's lots on the internet about it. UK dealers deny that there is a problem, but there is.

      I don't think the majority of Disco owners are going anywhere near the outback. Pretty much the same as most Cruisers too. But at least the cruiser is more reliable. I couldn't imagine somebody wandering in to LR and chosing the top spec Disco for outback travel lol.

    the sd4 is about 20k cheaper than the sd6... thats a pretty good reason to opt for the 2 litre!
