Nevada does not have an income tax. Property taxes are quite reasonable in Nevada. Other than our electric bills during the summer our energy bills are reasonable. The tourists who come here pay a ton in fees, gasoline taxes, and upcharges which eases the burdens of locals. My car is 11 years old and my registration fees are around $130 per year. Buy an older vehicle and pay less. Criminals who do not register their vehicles probably do not have insurance on them. Imagine the devastation they will cause if they kill a few people in their vehicle and no witnesses can read a license plate to find the driver.
Metro can still find you even without a license plate if they really wanted. They find people who manage to evade getting attacked/detained by casino security within minutes, so you're kidding yourself if you think they can't find hit-and-run-suspects, oh they can, they just generally don't
Lots to this. One people from California. Second rent increase 40% in one year. Third laws are not enforced. Fourth it’s cheaper to pay the fine then everything else.
This is likely why Vegas insurance is much more expensive. Paying for others who do not follow the law is highway robbery. Confiscate the vehicles if they have no insurance or proper plates and tags.

Registration in Nevada is so high now!! Forty plus years ago, my uncle lived in Los Angeles but had his car registered in Nevada because it was cheaper. Today, people live in Vegas but have California tags. Pretty much all the car rentals in Vegas have California plates today.
It doesn't matter what you pay for a car. The DMV in Nevada prices what it charges to register a vehicle based on the MSRP of the vehicle when new and deducts a little every year. (Who TF ever pays MSRP?? No one) I bought a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee off an auto auction for $750 to replace the 2005 Pontiac Grand Am I bought for $1,200 a year and a half earlier. The registration for the Pontiac was $80. The registration for the Jeep was $180 even though the Jeep was 20 years old and the Pontiac was 13 years old. A car that is over 20 years old is eligible for 'Classic Car' status and you do pay a little less. Nonetheless, registration fees in Nevada are out of control!!
People dont want to do the smog check or the $300-400 every year for a registration. Get rid of the smog and lower the yearly fees and people will register them. Insurance is high and gas prices are high what do you expect lower class people to do?
Nevada does not have an income tax. You are saving approximately 10% of your yearly income by living in Nevada. The least that you can do is suck it up and pay the tax just like the rest of the honest taxpayers in Nevada. Otherwise, go back to where you pay income tax and low registration fees. PROPERTY TAXES in Nevada are quite low. Again, that is another savings. Our weather is quite manageable 8 months out of the year. That keeps our gas bills to run our furnaces quite reasonable.
@@PaintingandExercise No, there is no income tax but the tax on car registration every year, plus smog checks more than make up for not having an income tax for lower income people. Not to mention the cost of fuel here is 3rd or 4th highest in the country. Now add on the extra high sales tax. Sorry but the income tax shouldn't mean you get to pay more in other taxes. The casino's are why this state doesn't have an income tax.
Don't blame the costs of registration and insurance, blame the losers that spend their money gambling, drugs or alcohol. So now not only do you have to pay for whatever repairs that could be hundreds or thousands to take care of, then pay again to retest the smog check, then pay for the registration, and if its late now because you had to get work done you pay more! After youve been driving the car all year with no safety issues, once registration times come around you're punished for have an older car with probems.. i would say that sounds unfair to the average casino worker here in Vegas thats making $16 an hour..the logical option for them is to just not pay all that money and keep food on the table for their family would you agree?
Same thing in CA. They laxed the laws during the pandemic and still it’s all screwed up. No plates, expired stickers or temp plates that expired ages ago. This happening in LV doesn’t surprise me either.
Cars driving around with paper tags, expired tags, and no plates isn't unusual. My car is currently registered but plate has tags from 2022. I drive past CHP, local police, and over bridges. No one stops me. If I get pulled over, I have all my paperwork paid for and current. There must be a lot of cars and drivers out there who are illegal (or the PC term is "undocumented" or "non-compliant").
I've seen cops driving behind cars with no plates, I've seen cops stopped at intersections see a car blatantly blow through a red light.....and they do nothing. Las Vegas has got to have some of the laziest, highest paid cops in the country. Seems like they go out of their way to do nothing.
The police may have orders to not increase the number of illegals arrested as that might get them deported so that they cannot vote in the next election where their vote is needed.
Exactly, but if a homeless person seeks refuge in a casino during a 120 degree heat wave, they get arrested because security hurt their fist punching the homeless guy. I kid you not either. Another thing that should alarm people are the cars registered out of state but they live here and work. I know of at least 3 houses with cars registered from California and Texas.
Some people have more than one address genius. Another reason is the over pricing of your state always overcharging insurance, yes Arizona, Utah, Chicago, California tags and insurance are possible especially if you have two addresses. You ever wonder why some shuttle buses have Utah tags? Maybe they are based in Utah. People who live in Nevada and only have one address have no choice but to pay the outrageous overpriced insurance on top of already inflated prices ~ that’s something the state needs to fix. As a Kalifornia resident, I'd say that is probably not happening for someone permanently living and working in LV! The tag fees in NV are significantly cheaper than here in Kalifornia and if you are a resident of NV, there is no reason to keep Kalifornia tags!
People say enforce the traffic laws but operating an unregistered vehicle in most places is a criminal offense and is quite serious. Unless you can prove that you just bought it or have some other legitimate documentation the vehicle would be towed and impounded on the spot. So don't understand why this is not being done. Also without registration your insurance in the unlikely event that they even have it, would probably be voided so seems totally ridiculous this os being allowed to happen.
People leave out of state plates on cars when they move to Vegas because the proof of insurance at the DMV is really expensive . LVMPD use to patrol apartment complexes on a daily basis years ago .
Most of these are uninsured motorists, if you got into a wreck with them and you have no uninsured motorists coverage, then you’re toast, full coverage insurance doesn’t cover uninsured motorists.
I bought a car at an auction back in November 2023 and I still have not received the title from the DMV to this day because the DMV is backed up on title processing from Oct. 2023. I'm currently driving with no plate because I can't register my car unless it's titled under my name which I don't know if it is because I haven't received my title yet and the reaching the DMV by phone is nearly impossible. All I have is a movement permit that expires soon. I guess I'm going to have to go to the DMV tomorrow without an appointment to get another movement permit since they don't take appointments for movement permits. Yay! probably a two hour wait. Hopefully, they'll be able to confirm that my car is actually titled under my name in their system when I see them tomorrow since that's the only way of knowing without actually physically receiving my title. Thanks Nevada DMV.
While this article only goes so far targeting cars with no plates, I feel like "Ghost Cars" as they briefly mentioned includes cars with tinted license plate covers or license plate covers that are bowed so the glare obscures the numbers. Nevada law makers say they already have a law on the books - nothing more needs to be done legislatively. We just need law officers to enforce the law. One thing I'd like to see the DMV do is to make temp placards to place on the back of the car rather than papers to stick in the front passenger side of the windshield. Or perhaps we should change the law to be like california the plates stay with the car when it is sold.
Not Vegas, but activists over a decade ago in my city complained to city council that allowing police to go into parking lots to ticket or impound cars without plates or cars whose VIN come up as stolen is discriminatory behavior. The city council stopped the police from going into any non-public-property location to patrol. So the police don't go into malls, strip malls, parking garages, hotel parking lots, or apartment parking lots/garages to look for stolen cars, stolen license plates, or missing license plates. Fighting crime creates highly disproportionate crime statistics and that must be avoided apparently.
I saw one the other day at the Walmart parking lot with the paper license plates expired in 2016. I was like it's 2024? Where is the police. If I see sh*tty cars, cars with crash marks, and cars without license plates I avoid them. I don't when want to be near them. Add to that. Yesterday, I was driving straight, and I accidentally touched the Turn Right signal. And the sh*tty car that was driving behind me immediately pulled up to my right. I just stood there staring at him like WTF!? I bet he expected me to actually turn to the right to hit him.
@user-uj5ly1eq5n you clearly don't understand what that term means and cannot use it in the right context. That's no surprise. See, now I'm actually doing it in this comment. For your education.
If there were enough officers to actually enforce traffic laws, make stops and impound these "ghost cars" they might be able to make a difference. However, LV Metro just doesn't have enough officers. So, Las Vegas mayoral candidates, how are YOU going to fix this?
There are also many cars that have fake paper plates with "NY" on them. I see them every time I go out on the road. They tend to drive very recklessly. They need to get off the road or have their cars confiscated. They don't pay registration fees or insurance. This jeopardizes public safety and costs all of us greatly.
Alot of times the people buy new cars but they can't get approved for their loans so the keep driving on TEMP plates until they have enough of a down payment that the dealer approves the loan and they can register the car
This is hilarious. They wont pull the car over with no license plate but pulled me over for my license plate light being out. I have registration, insurance and a drivers license. 😒
When you need to make household budget cuts, car insurance is one of the first things you decide to go without. Next you default on your loans and credit cards. Food is really getting too expensive, sacrifices must be made.
In WA State they issue temporary numbers that are printed out and put in the rear window until the metal plate becomes available. Maybe NV should do the same. Btw how do the people get insurance w/o a license plate #
The plates don’t come attached to the cars in NV like some other states. The dealer prints out a temporary tag that lasts for 30 days and we have to get the car registered within that time. We have our choice of many license plates to choose from. Since there are so many doggone people moving here, mostly everything is done online now.
Weird fact most people don't know. Plates are for highway use. If you're not on a highway, you're not really breaking the law without tags... Still insurance is a must. I found this out in the 70's. Here where I live, people just drive around with expired plates, and rarely get stopped.
At least rental cars come up when you run the tags. And rental cars are usually in good shape, clean (cars get washed when return/released back out), and have barcodes on the window for scanning when returned. The ones being addressed are the 💩 boxes you don’t want to get hit by or get in an accident with.
strange, here, a car without plates would be an automatic tow, if you could prove that all your papers were correct and the plate was lost or stolen then you can bail your car out once you put a plate on it.

The high cost to survive and drive created this mess. What can a state do if everyone stops paying insurance and state tags? The extortion games are long over do.
Anything dealing with a license is commercial. When licensed is when policies apply to that license holder, which includes plates and soforth if talking driving.
To hell with fines, impound the car AND stiff fines. Failure to pay and the car is gone. These people had plenty time to pay. If I can keep up with my responsibilities, they can too.
In the Netherlands you need a license plate to prove that the car is registered to someone. There's only a few firms that are allowed to make these plates. So false or "cloned" license plates hardly exist. Anyone driving around without license plates will get pulled over and their car will be seized until they have proven the legal owner and that the car is insured.
Politicians want the illegals to vote. Pulling their cars would discourage them. So the police seem to be limited in the number of cars they do pull over for driving without license plates, driving with stolen plates, driving with false paper plates, etc. Their votes are needed for 2024.
Any car without plates should be immediately towed away and impounded. The owner can't have it back until they pay all outstanding fees and a nice big fine. No plates, no driving. Ever.
It’s absolutely frustrating that they aren’t getting their vehicles impounded on the spot, and not released until properly licensed, insured, and registered. The whole ball of wax, first offense. Stop with the warnings. This is BS!!
Even car from other states has no valid car license plates you will notice some car here in Nevada their stickers still green that means they don’t renew their registration
Something similar here in New Jersey- New Jersey requires plates both front and rear. Over the past several years I've been noticing a lot of New Jersey cars with no front plate. I see them nearly every day, and usually more than one. One story I was told was that a lot of used cars have been coming from out of state, states that don't require a front plate, and these cars don't have a plate mount on the front bumper. In recent years I've also been noticing cars driving around with smoked plastic covers over the plates. The only reason I can see for getting those is to make it more difficult for the police to read your plate number while going down the road. Whether that is the reason, I don't know.

It doesn't matter what you pay for a car. The DMV in Nevada prices what it charges to register a vehicle based on the MSRP of the vehicle when new and deducts a little every year. (Who TF ever pays MSRP?? No one)
I bought a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee off an auto auction for $750 to replace the 2005 Pontiac Grand Am I bought for $1,200 a year and a half earlier. The registration for the Pontiac was $80. The registration for the Jeep was $180 even though the Jeep was 20 years old and the Pontiac was 13 years old.
A car that is over 20 years old is eligible for 'Classic Car' status and you do pay a little less.

People dont want to do the smog check or the $300-400 every year for a registration. Get rid of the smog and lower the yearly fees and people will register them. Insurance is high and gas prices are high what do you expect lower class people to do?
Right on. Where I come from, there's no smog test and registration for an older car is around 40 bucks.

People say enforce the traffic laws but operating an unregistered vehicle in most places is a criminal offense and is quite serious. Unless you can prove that you just bought it or have some other legitimate documentation the vehicle would be towed and impounded on the spot. So don't understand why this is not being done. Also without registration your insurance in the unlikely event that they even have it, would probably be voided so seems totally ridiculous this os being allowed to happen.

Maybe police officers are dealing with more serious crimes.

Another issue is fake temporary tags. They are easy to produce. Many cities have reported major issues with such.
Weird fact most people don't know. Plates are for highway use. If you're not on a highway, you're not really breaking the law without tags... Still insurance is a must. I found this out in the 70's. Here where I live, people just drive around with expired plates, and rarely get stopped.

In the Netherlands you need a license plate to prove that the car is registered to someone. There's only a few firms that are allowed to make these plates.
