      Automotive designers spends large amounts of time shaving individual grams of weight from their vehicles to help with increasingly rigid fuel economy standards and to leverage performance. Most definitely cost is a factor, it always is, but to dismiss 9000 grams so quickly is quite uninformed (especially when the weight can be removed so easily and quickly). Not to mention that a spare tire, with wheel and jack etc is often noticeably more than 20lbs.

Fortunately I had checked the air in my donut spare recently so I drove slowly (under 50 mph) home. If I had not had that spare tire then a tow truck or any other option would have been extremely expensive and time-consuming given where I was and the fact that it was Friday after business hours.

I have had a large puncture, and in that case 100% useless. Needs repair or replace. I have an older SUV so I still have a spare full size tire, thankfully. Also, got CAA. My friend had a similar slow leak issue amd we had to pump every hour to get home 3 hours away. But we did.

    If you use a can of sealant on your tire, it will damage the sensor for the Tire Pressure Monitor. It will put a sealant coating inside of the wheel which will have to be cleaned out with solvents. Expensive! Best to have a tire pump and a flat tire repair kit in your car. Pull out the nail or tack that went in to the tire, and insert the patch-string with the provided tools in the repair kit. Then re-inflate the tire with the pump. If you had nitrogen filled tires, you can go back to the garage that has the nitrogen machine and they can let out the air and fill the tire back with nitrogen.

  • @dperreno
    @dperreno 4 месяца назад +7

    I'll be the contrarian. Tires are MUCH more robust today than they were 50 years ago. Most tires can take a nail and still hold air - the TPMS will let the driver know that the pressure is low giving them time to drive to a garage or tire shop to have the tire fixed or replaced. The reality is that 98% of car drivers today would not even know how to remove the flat tire and replace it with a spare so they would be calling for help anyway. Although this used to be a BIG DEAL (100 years ago, cars used to carry 2 spare wheels/tires!), it has now become more of an edge case, something that most drivers will encounter only once every 5 or 10 years. Not worth it to provide a full-size spare tire, or even a mini-spare anymore.

      I disagree. Without at least a donut spare, this summer I would have been stranded 200 miles from home on a remote rural highway where I was probably 100 miles from the nearest tire shop. And it was Friday evening when a tire shop might not be open until Monday. Of course, the donut spare is not designed to drive 200 miles but I didn't have a choice. Pissed me off that the dead real tire would not fit in the compartment where the donut is stored. If I had had a bunch of luggage I don't know where they think I could have put the real tire that was flat.
      If a car at least has a spare that fits, then any tow truck driver or halfway mechanical person can swap on the spare. Without a spare, but with a bad flat, you have no choice but to get towed somewhere and wait for business hours.
