🚨 As I always ask: WHERE WERE YOU WHEN YOU FIRST HEARD THIS SONG? 👀
And I always think - dammit, I wish I could remember these things! No idea, it was just sort of ubiquitous, always on pub juke boxes etc back in the day. I'm just slightly too young for them, I was an 80s kid, I didn't really recognise their genius until much later. In the 80s, anything 70s was seen as wildly uncool for us kids - even Led Zep!
Playing chess in this guy’s apartment. Very seductive song…
Was finishing college after taking a few years off ! Doing the trippy hippie chick thing: hair down to my waist, smoking weed after class before I went home, and music constantly in '75. Graduated in May, '75 Associate Degree, started working for my dad. Dad said the hair had to go in a business office. Oh snap !!😊✌
@@jonnylumberjack6223 if you don’t mind me asking, which 80s bands would you recommend me reacting to? 👀👀
@@kerryknight228 very true!
What you're noticing is that the drums are in 4/4 time and the guitar and singer are both in 3/4 time....they link up every 12th bar.....insane skill and concentration
Damn that timing/time signature is crazy! Mathematically meeting up on the 12th makes perfect sense! Thanks Lambert! 🔥
Drummer is John Henry Bonham, widely regarded by his peers as the greatest rock drummer of all time. The strings were played by the bassist John Paul Jones on the Mellotron while playing the bass with his feet. Because he’s John Paul Jones. They didn’t need to bring anyone else in. Was just them 4. Oh, and they are Led Zeppelin, every song they made was fantastic. Kashmir is an iconic song, May not even be in my top 5 Zeppelin songs
Top 5 from Led Zeppelin?! 🤔🤔
This hardly stays out of the top 5, it is arguably the greatest rock song ever.
@@mviroli I love it too, and it is certainly one of the most iconic rock songs ever. But I have personal favorites that I would take over it. Also, Zeppelin has most of my top 20 songs all time, so I’d still say I have it WAY up there lol
Bonham's drums were heavily sampled back in the day (Beastie Boys among others)
@@abovetheinfluence9361I'm pretty sure he just talking about LZ.
"Is that an orchestra?"
I love this comment. It's literally one guy. On this song, John Paul Jones was responsible for playing strings, horns, organ, and bass. At the same time. He's the greatest glue guy in the history of music in my opinion. He played every instrument and every role he had to, to hold Led Zeppelin's increasingly complex sound together, and he did it perfectly. One of the finest musicians that has ever lived, full stop.
One of the most under appreciated, even by his band mates. It’s not easy living the shadow of Page and Plant.
…a four piece brass section was brought in for the recording of Kashmir. It’s something that’s not talked about that often but…you can hear the brass here. Jones obviously wrote the charts and played Mellotron…and the bass!
The organ made the horns sound He used pedals for the Bass while busy at the Hammond Organ
@@peterbartolomeo5542 …a Moroccan brass band was brought into the studio for the recording of Kashmir. In a live setting on stage, Mr. Jones played Mellotron, Hohner D-6 keyboard and bass pedals to recreate it (Kashmir) as best he could. It’s a known fact that a human brass band was recruited for its studio recording.
They are still my favorite band of all time. RIP Bonzo 😥
I can see why they would be a fav! 🙏🏾🙏🏾
That's Bonham genius. He's playing heavy and behind the beat and yet he's DRIVING the track anyway. Just sublime
These 4 men were the very best at their art and that’s what Jimmy Page wanted when he started the band! They were a Supergroup before their was such a thing! Great reaction! ❤
That's John Bonham on the drums. Was his tragic early death that ended Led Zeppelin. Best rock drummer of all time - still.
Oh THATS John Bonham! I hear Bill Burr the comedian talk about him all the time. Thanks for the info!
This song was created by Jimmy Page
The cool part is that the guitar is tuned differently and along with the bass the instruments in 3/4 time like a waltz. The drums are in 4/4 time so actually the song sounds like it is in 12/4 time.
Greatest and most versatile talented band in history!! And Jimmy Page produced all their albums!
Damn ALL of them?? That’s incredible 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Those horns you hear is John Paul Jones on keyboard & he's a genius
Phenomenal, eloquent reaction. Your note of the vocals "dragging behind the beat" shone a new light on a song I've heard a thousand times. Bravo, Sub. 👏
A lot of that nice, shaggy looseness around the beat, with most of the players, except Bonham of course, who’s the dead-on ship’s engine of the whole thing. Beautiful sense of impending cataclysms gets generated by all this.
Now you must do the live version from Celebration Day Concert. They are much older and the drummer is the original drummers Son. You will be even more impressed with Celebration Day Concert version. It was their last Concert and first since the death of their drummer back in 80s
The thing about this is LZ are always this good!! The overall magic involves all four of them. The writing is very often collaborative and they sound like a whole orchestra when they play togeather, not least because of the multi talents of John Paul Jones who plays bass keyboards organ and mandolin . Jimmy page is the genius on guitar and created the riff and the song developed later. He is also the visionary and the producer. They were recording at a large country house with a massive hall, they set the drums up and recorded them in the stairwell which gave the distinctive sound performed by the incomparible John Bonham. Robert PLant wrote the lyrics, he is influenced by the hippy movement from the sixties and is interested in spiritual jorneys - that theme recurrs in other songs - try Stairway to heaven live performance MSG 1973 and Achilles last stand. He is a savagely intelligent man - with an encyclopedic musical knowledge and many interests including US blues, british literature and and history so the catalogue of songs is wide ranging, always beautifully written and his stage presence is only exceeded by his vocal genius. You need to watch some live performances as well as recorded versions toget to understand the band. there is a live perfomance of Kashmir at Knebworth Festival and also celebration day reunion concert but sadly without john Bonham but with his son Jason on drums. You are going to love this band!!
I. LOVE. THIS. BREAKDOWN! Thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed info and background on the band. I’m excited to get more into their overall catalog! You’re the best Sue! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
@@abovetheinfluence9361 You are very welcome - it is great to see an enthusiastic and intelligent reaction to music you love yourself. I personally think that your favourites will include dazed and confused, the lemon song and When the levee breaks you, hmmmm also need to see whole lotta love , i could go on indefinitely. Also i forgot to mention that RP plays harmonica like he invented it , on the blues tracks. You keep reacting we'll keep watching!!!
That orchestra you are asking about is all John Paul Jones by himself on the Melotron and then he played the bass with his feet, like organ players do in churches, best reg from Iceland, LED ZEPPELIN, best band ever.
Robbert Plant wrote this song. And the great John Bonham on the Drums.R.I.P. Bonham
Thanks so much for the info and for watching Kimberly! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Jimmy Page wrote the music and Robert wrote the lyrics.
Page played this riff at the tail end of a tape while recording another song. He heard the turn around and knew it was something, and arranged it with JPJ and Bonham.
Multi time signatures from each member.... Crazy MASTERPIECE!!!
The GOATS …… enough said. Been a fan 50 years
Badass review of one of the Best songs ever written. !!!! Plant-vocals. Page - guitar. Jones bass/keyboard. RIP JOHN BONHAM -drums
- - - - - BONZO, baby! - - - - -
You summed it up perfectly when you said: “This is genius.”
Jimmy page is 1 of very few guitarist who don't ply it like an instrument. Its a voice. It sings and cries and talks directly to your soul!!
Great reaction! Check out the song "Since I've Been Loving You" off of the album Led Zeppelin III. And like you did with this one, check out the studio tracks of Zeppelin songs before watching any live performances of the same songs. I subscribed.
Peace
Adding “Since I’ve Been Loving You” to the list as we speak! I’ll wait for the live versions for now till I run through some more. Thanks so much for the advice and appreciate sub! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
You won't regret adding it...maybe my favorite of theirs. Find the live version
That is one of my many "favorite
This is one my many "favorites" of theirs. So much so, that Jimmy Pages' guitar opening is my ringtone.
Ramble on, The Immigrant Song, Black Dog, when The Levee Breaks, In My Time of Dying, Good Times Bad Times (their first track on their first album), Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Whole Lotta Love, Dazed and Confused....
As a person who grew up with LED Zeppelin, I really enjoyed your critique of this song. You have picked up on things that other reaction videos have not about this song.
And this is why Led Zeppelin was the greatest rock band of all time.
This song was like three years in the works. Of course Jimmy Page produced this and all of their music. That orchestra, is John Paul Jones.
Three years??? Whew! Definitely paid off for sure! Thanks Scott! 🔥
They were, are and WILL ALWAYS BE the ultimate rock band.
In my top 2 Zeppelin songs of all time (some days it's #1, some days it's #2). This song never fails to put me in a trance and take me on a journey of discovery. What amazes me most is the complex sound that comes out of such simplicity; simple riff, no guitar solo, no groovy bass line, simple keyboards, simple drums (except for a few fills in the last 90 seconds), and rather simple vocals (other than a few Astral wails).
I don't know how they did it, but by chilling out and creating a monotonous drone, they were able to transcend all that came before and all that would come after. This is beyond genius; this is catching the cosmos in a jar and releasing it as Led Zeppelin.
I was probably at home listening to this on record in the 70s. The first time I saw this live was at the Knebworth festival in 1979.It was just fantastic too see as a17 year old and Zeppelin fanatic.
Their live version of Kashmir at celebration day is a must listen. They’re much older in that performance; in their 60s or 70s, but I dare say it’s even better than the original.
There will never be another Zeppelin.
Still my #1.
Very Iconic!! This is one of my favorites 🎶
I can see why it’s a fav! 🔥🔥🔥
"When the Levee Breaks" by Zeppelin is a real good one. Also, Grand Funk Railroad's live version of "Inside Looking Out" would be fun to see you react to.
This is one of their greats 🎶🎸🎧
The greatest band ever
My favorite band since 69😅
John Bonham is on the drums, quite easily the finest rock drummer of the 20th century. Bonham played his drums like more of a musical instrument than simply a rhythm generator...he played off Plants vocals and especially Page's guitar in ways that were most melodic...and...like you said, "next level"...and the power in his drumming was paranormal. His drum intro on WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS is the most sampled drum bit IN HISTORY.
Masterpiece. Yep. There’s dozens more. The variety of musical experimentation with this immensely talented band is unmatched. It’s so great to see you guys react the same way we did when we were first blown away by in 40 years ago
That's the greatest drummer ever lived who blessed some sticks! Mr. John bonham.
Drums - John Bonham (1948 - 1980)
RIP percussion genius!! 💙✌️
Just the 4 members. Zeppelin will always be # 1
Led Zeppelin started in 1968 and ended in 1980 with the passing of drummer John Bonham. The group comprised Jimmy Page on all guitars, Jimmy created the band, and produced all their albums, John Paul Jones on bass, mandolin, and keyboards. John Paul Jones played bass and keys on this song as well as did the string arrangements with session musicians. Drummer John Bonham is considered one of the top 3 rock drummers in history (in my vote, he's #1), and vocalist Robert Plant who also played harmonica on several songs. Robert was inspired to write the lyrics while on a trip, driving through the desert in Morocco. Jimmy had a couple of riff ideas that he worked on with John Bonham and once John Paul Jones brought in the orchestral arrangement to add to the open tuned guitar, which brought out a Middle Eastern vibe, the song exploded. This is one of what I call Zeppelin's three "epics", in addition to Stairway to Heaven and Achilles' Last Stand. All three illustrate unique, inspired sections of music.
What an excellent reaction. Insightful, listening and feeling the music. The effects were a nice touch, smart and funny. I've been discovering older music and this song is definitely up there.
Thanks soooo much! I appreciate all the kind words and definitely want to give y’all the best reactions I can! 🙌🏾
Masterpiece is what ive always said. Perfect dissection!
The instruments are playing in 3/4 time and the drums are in 4/4 time.
0:54 ... vocalist Robert Plant wrote the song lyrics in 1973 which was originally going to be called "Driving to Kashmir" even though he was on a trip to Morocco and the road was seemingly endless. The band's founder and guitarist Jimmy Page came up with the iconic guitar riff which needless to say "worked"...
Plant had an interesting way of singing on the downbeat .. gave it that strange feel.
A brass section was brought in for this recording. It’s not mentioned or talked about much but I have read it somewhere. It makes sense too as you clearly can hear the section. Mr. Jones obviously wrote out the charts - and provided Mellotron accents, and electric bass. You’re not hearing a string section - you’re hearing the Mellotron being played by John Paul.
WAY TO GO MY MAN!!! Finally, someone playing the original FIRST!! Ok dogg, now you can dissect all the live versions like Knebworth, etc.
PEACE,
You have to see the live at Knebworth 1979 version if you wanna see how crazy the drums are
Hey amigo….you have a good ear (triplets etc coming from Bonham) but what you are actually hearing is a virtual masterwork in time signatures and an epic supporting performance from the immortal John Paul Jones….absolute genius, no symphony on this recording at all. These vocals are messing with your head because the drums and guitar are played in different time signatures ( the song itself 80 beats per minute 4/4 time on the drums and 3/4 time on the guitar) so the instruments are actually only locking up every 12th measure. Add to this, the fact that the phrases are actually 6 measures long with one rogue 9/8 time signature directly following the opening of the lyrics and you get an incredibly complex piece of music that could make a garage band go insane trying to cover. The talent assembled to make this music happen is just absolutely astonishing and if you listen again you’ll see that Bonham is virtually an atomic clock in the entirety of the song. He holds steady throughout and anchors the whole piece while the vocals, keyboard and guitar drift around within the phrasing and common 4/4 time signature of the drums. Truly this is one of the most intriguing and musically creative pieces ever played in my opinion. It is simply an epic masterwork.
Greatest Rock song EVER.
Now you should do the live video version from 2007 in the Celebration Day concert held in London's O2 Arena. The guys never sounded better! The late John Bonham's son, Jason, plays drums and kills it (like his father did). Enjoy!
Great to see you back.
Jimmy Page played this riff and John Bonham joined in on the drums Jimmy Page continued with writing the song with the rest of the band and Robert Plant came up with the lyrics later after the band drove through the Morocco desert through Kashmir
Love the video dude and your attention to detail. That caught my attention. :)
Great to see you! It has been a while.
Yes, we hear it!! Some of us have heard it since day one!!
JB. The goat of drummers.
The GOATS…All their stuff is great! They are their own great! Robert Plants lyrics, and Voice!
Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham are the composers.
Appreciate the info Irene!!!
John Paul Jones composed almost 1/2.
What about JPJ?/
And JPJ...he arranged all the string parts!
Robert wrote the lyrics
First time caller here, first visit here as well. Greetings from Detroit! I washighly entertained . Love those gospel come to Jesus moments. 🤣
"I Never had drum lessons,I just played the way I wanted, and got black-listed in Birmingham ....." John Bonham 6/21/1975
such a fun reaction! take my upvote, you pirate! Lol next time, try "custard pie"
Despite the title of the song, it's actually about Morocco, where they used to go a lot.
Oh wow! I gotta go back and reread the lyrics now. Super artistic and creative 🔥🔥
The horns and string were real; they were arranged by John Paul Jones. The main riffs were from Jimmy Page, and the drumming of course was from John Bonham, who unintentionally created the perfect hip-hop beat several years before hip-hop was even born. His rhythm on this song has been co-opted by hip-hop musicians for decades.
Play led zeppelin i cant quit you baby and and yoj shook me!
Volume needs to be higher.
Greatest band to ever walk the earth.
The Mighty Zep!
You should watch the live version!
literally one of my favorite songs of all time, Hey hey what can I do is my favorite... just is can't tell you why lol. But I am only 35 and this band's hay day was in my dad's youth... and is my undeniably favorite band of all time. maybe cuz i grew up on it, who knows? but the they are my favorite.
ROBERT PLANT!! Icon
schoolly d took that intro as a sample for his "signifying rapper" song
song writers are Page Bonzo and Plant
The Rain song, Ten Years Gone, Custard Pie.
John Bonham...hammer of the Gods!God's!! May he RIP
Dang, this is your fifth reaction to Zep. You should be on a first name basis with these guys!
Yeah, Bonham’s kick was second to none. Check out his live drum solo on Moby Dick.
You should listen to their live versions of this song
❤❤❤❤
😊
You should give you shook me a listen. Since I've been loving you as well, studio version.
Oh, and the song "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a song by the Beatles. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin were both big influences on Prince. You should check out their stuff as well. I would start with two songs by the Beatles, the first being the live rooftop performance of the song "Don't let me down", and the second being "Come Together" off of the Abbey Road album. It might be cool to check out the original recording of "While my Guitar Gently Weeps' off of the Beatles White Album as well. I' linked the song below.

I’ve meaning to get some reactions for The Beatles. And thanks for the background info too! Thanks!!! 🎉
John. Bonham. Rocks.
Great reaction! The guitar and strings melodic riffs may sound familiar because P Diddy sampled them for one of his tunes. Nothing beats the original, of course.
THE DRUMMER WAS JOHN BONHAM THE FANTASTIC DRUMMER... AND LED ZEPPELIN THE BEST ROCK BAND . BYE BYE AND THANKS.🥁🎸
Watch the video since they are older- Must see!!
Bro you gotta turn up the volume!! I can barley hear it on my end with my volume all the way up lol. Hey, can’t go wrong with the GOATS!!
i remember melting into my older sisters couch tripping on mesculin and seeing squiggly things cross my eyes and getting so into and lost in this song ,,man i miss the eighies
Bonzo on the drums my man.
their best and most iconic song for me, its epic. a lot of their songs are though. theres a reason zeppelin and Pink Floyd are the greatest bands, ever. all their songs are unique and epic. also on the drums? John bonham, widely regarded by all as THE greatest, of all time.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
John Henry Bonham. He’s a beast. They all are. Enjoy. There’s none better.
Yes, like sap. Though some of us hear honey.
You MUST sample the live version performed at the O2 Arena with John Bonham's son Jason on the drums. It is Epic!
You should listen to some more steely dan. Donald fagen had solo projects, Florida room by donald is soooo good I can't get it out of my head.
Check out Kashmir live with Egyptian orchestra (AMAZING)
RIP Bonzo
China Cat Sunflower-Tivoli by the Grateful Dead 👍
#Goatsofrockandroll.
speaking of yes, you would really like YES... classic YES not 80s yes.
Gotta watch live celebration day 40 years later. It’s better
John Bonham is the drummer. AKA Bonzo.
Heard Bill Burr speak about him a few times… I see why he loves him so much 🔥🔥🔥😊
If you want to hear a great drum solo by John Bonham, you need to listen to Moby Dick it's from the film "The Song Remains the Same", by Led Zepplin. It was done live in Maddison Square Garden.
Led Zeppelin on loan from Asgard!
