I've often wondered about programs like Ozzie & Harriet, Different Strokes, Family Ties, etc. and how for many kids coming from troubled families (drunk parents or worse) these TV programs represent the "perfect" that they are missing.

I remember seeing this program on tv and it was well received. Ozzie was not over bearing dad, the kids all got careers out of this tv show, and the parents had a close relationship with the two boys. So no need to feed they rumors on this or drama. All families have problems, not all are perfect.

But it has been proven by many child actors that are now adults who have said being an actor as a child made them different because they didn't get to do the things that other kids did.
Many have said they lost out on their childhood by working and it makes sense.

I recently took a trip back to the beginning of the fifties - 1950-1960, and have been binge watching the Ozzie and Harriette shows. I was born in 1950, and was feeling a bit sad from today’s changes. Between the kind of life the Waltons had, and some of the Nelson family brought me back to my growing up - I was the oldest sibling of eight children, and we lived in a small bungalow with two bedrooms and a small “box room”, that was just under 1000 square feet. We all grew up with a lot of love, and nothing we didn’t need. It was a wonderful time ! We lived in a small home, on the Mississippi River, at just about the right time. People cared about others and tried to help. Our town was fairly small, given today’s standards. It was a nice visit back in time - thank you for all these episodes. I think we were very fortunate , and we learned responsibilities from that period of time, and tried to help others - the Golden Rule. Thank you so much ! 🙏❤

This completely overlooks OZZIE'S GIRLS -- the sequel series during the 1973 to 1974 season, which was the last acting Ozzie Nelson did. Harriet was on board for that show too.

I have watched some of that on youtube, it’s great! Too bad cancer cut it short. There are other clips from around this time - an Andy Williams show with Ozzie and Harriet, Karen Carpenter and Jonathan Winters that is hilarious. Ozzie would have kept going for sure. So sad even though I wasn’t born by this time! Love watching.

Ozzie was nothing like the TV persona he represented. I am glad you referenced Halberstam’s book because I have made reference to that on all my posts about Ozzie. I would add how jealous Ozzie was of Ricky’s success and did what he could to undermine him. Ozzie was not a good natured goofball dad, but a petty tyrant. A grubby and unpleasant man

  • @dennisrediske6338

Ozzie had a Rolltop Desk at the beach house. I was dropped off and watched TV and home movies. He raised African Violets on the left side of the living room and it was a very nice lighted setup.
There was a tree in the backyard and Ozzie had the Carpenters build the deck around it. I played on the swing set with Tracy when she was little.
Cool of you to share stories too!

Ozzie was a non-smoker, but Harriet provided plenty of second hand smoke for Ozzie to breathe in. In that era, about 75% of men smoked. A lot of people die prematurely, even the rich & famous, because they don't keep up with having blood tests. Blood testing provides information that something is going haywire within the body, and to catch that in the early stage makes treatment easier and more successful.

I saw Ricky Nelson perform about a year before his death. It was very striking to me that his performance was wooden and joyless. He was performing, but not even trying to engage the audience or have a good time himself. I felt bad for him. I guess when you are already a huge success at 17, getting better as you get older is pretty tough.

I am not sure putting their lives in a box provides the best view. To suggest the 1950s were an unreality of what life was, too, is a simple point of view. What is clear, if they lived what they protrayed, perhaps the outcomes would have been better. It is with little doubt, the pressure on Ozzie to put out a weekly TV show took its toll on his outcome, not to mention watching Ricky ruin his life. Just as a thought, perhaps saying hey mom what's for dinner is a better reailty rather than hey mom and dad, I need money, I have a drug problem and my life is not good. Today, we are dealing with folks that are not quite sure what gender they are. Hey Mom what's for dinner seems to be a better reality.

The heroin abuse and meth sales, coupled with producing pornography, surprised me a little bit, but they were only human. I'm glad Harriet left her former profession behind her forever and never looked back. They are all dead now, and I suppose we should stop digging them up to expose their faults. They aren't here to answer those condemning stories of debauchery. It is a bit sad that they were such awful people though.
