    My main problem with most of my project-based clients are "utilizing the spaces" or "don't leave blank spaces" kind of mindset. No matter how I explain to them that "less is more", they just want their design to be crowded which is something I don't like. So I am forced to design something that is not really good BUT, unimaginably, great for their eyes. LOL.. I don't share them in my portfolio though.. My style for crowded design is to choose colors that has great contrast between the subject and the background or graphics that are less important.

    • @giordanographics
      @giordanographics Год назад +3

      Yeah, in the end we just accept the fact that the client is paying our bills either we like what was designed or not. Those kind of "messy" designs don't deserve a place on anyone portfolio.

    Hi Satori! Can you make a video about what students (like high schoolers/undergraduates) can do if they wish to get into graphic design? I really like your videos and I believe they might have reached more younger people than you expected!

    • @Optable
      @Optable 2 года назад +46

      My first tips I encourage my students to do:
      - Find designs you like, save them, and try to copy them from start to finish as close as possible to the finished product. This will both test and improve your skills in your software of choice!
      - Learn Gestalt theory and find examples of it in the real world/web
      - Full up your workspace until there’s nothing left! (Negative space can come next after you understand back the dories/principles of design
      -Study the top designers based on your taste

    1. How you can add value to a potential client and how can you solve their problems
    2. What are some of the things we can do to sho wor demonstrate we can solve problems to potential clients
    - In each project you should outline the problems that the client had so that might be the brands logo
    - Like how you solved those problems how you used your skills and your experience to overcome those hurdles
    3. Hook the attention of the audience or the viewer
    then deliver the message once you've got their attention the graphic design portfolio is
    then sell your skills services and any other design project
    -ask yourself what kind of clients are you looking for?
    - What kind of people are you looking to attract
    - non graphics design then go to people whos knows nothing then get reviewed
    4. Small amount of work without introducing too many project
    do use mockups to design your portfolio

    "Less is more" is the most important advice when speaking with a Designer (imo). Of course, very important who your audience are. Personally, too often I see designers showing their skills with animations (a lot of animations) and it only manages to confuse our eyes. "Where do I go from here?".
    I remember back when Flash was introduced. It was a big leap and people went completely overboard. Don't get me wrong, they made some amazing stuff but confused people when it came to navigation. Prioritise Navigation! Make it look good without overdoing it.

    I'm subscribed for a reason - great videos! 👍
    Now that AI can be our 'partner' if chosen, creating a portfolio has become testing. The main reason is that AI-generated art, or _work_ , can now be more diverse than ever. The answer to the following might be an obvious 'pick your niche'. Double-edged sword to now direct a team as opposed to having hands-on experience. I haven't had my hands on the actual software eg. Illustrator, PS, After Effects, Audition, etc. for a while. I'm finding myself creating with the help of AI and discovering other things I can create, almost better than the ones I used to manage with the team. I was just directing it before. As AI is allowing us to diversify further, the target audience covers a _lot_ of demographics. So I'm branching out on my own, and looking at my work is like owning albums by Nine Inch Nails, Britney Spears, Avicii, Tupac and Updog, all at the same time!
    How would you showcase a portfolio with a wide variety of work? This is the gist. It's been a year since you posted this, and I think your opinion about how to create a portfolio _now_ with the advent of AI versus a year ago would be interesting, insightful and very helpful. 👍

    There is no such thing as a top 5% portfolio. The industry is too divided and too complex. A portfolio that works for one company isn't going to work for another company. A trendy, cool portfolio isn't going to work for a boring, old school agency. A European portfolio isn't going to work for an agency in nowheresville, Iowa. An In-house portfolio doesn't work for agencies. A fashion portfolio doesn't work for tech companies. On and on and on. Yes there will be some crossover but you can't please everyone, that is the fundamental challenge of creating a portfolio. You have to accept your specific portfolio will only apply to 20% of possible business out there.

    • @marcol.9125
      @marcol.9125 Год назад +1

      I would say: Yes, it‘s necessary. It builds trust because potential clients get to see a real face behind your brand for example.
      Maybe a short video introducing yourself and your work would gain people‘s trust even more.
      I mean, how do you feel visiting a website with and without a portrait of the business owner? Or how you feel watching a video of the person?
      On the other side, who are the people that would never reveal their real face? That are scammers for example. And if you show who you are, people tend to trust you more.
      That‘s how I see it.

And I felt drawn to graphic design because of designs and logos that every company or brand has. For example, Nike has logo for their sneakers, the Apple logo for the Apple products, and Microsoft logo for their products and applications everyone uses. I am still new to graphic design and I’m hoping to learn more.

    Hey Satori, quick question:
    What's the value of having a website portfolio in comparison to having Behance with awards/features, or an Instagram account with lots of engagement?

      More creative control, and it looks more professional

      I think having a personal website these days is very dated. Everybody uses Behance and Instagram, having a website looks old

      Social proof? People are engaging with you in comments/likes/following.
      Credibility? You have awards/features on Behance. More views, more comments, more followers.

    Hello Satori, I have a question. Does the background color of a product needs to be the color of a logo ? Is it a rule?

    • @SatoriGraphics
      @SatoriGraphics  Год назад

      No it does not. It's often wise to use the brand identity colour scheme, but it isn't always the correct decision. It depends on the brief, the target audience, and a lot of other things

    Great video. Gotta be honest though.... I considered clicking away within the first 5 seconds because your camera quality is below average. Not making fun here, just being objective... it's a credibility issue.

      No it's a fair point. The camera quality pre editing is actually good. However, the quality worsens post shooting for some reason. It's really annoying.

    Satori I know this question may sound silly but is their a difference between a graphic designer portfolio besides someone who does only illustration. Please answer

    • @SatoriGraphics
      @SatoriGraphics  2 года назад +1

      digital illustration is graphic design, just it isn't that 'corporate'. However for the portfolio, the same rules apply. You want to show value to your potential clients. That means showing projects you worked on, your skills and how you added value to past clients
