This finale was not what I expected! The Giant metal suit and the huge beams were so much fun and required all the main characters to band together to stop it. Just what I want in a finale. Enjoy :)

43:30 Funfact: Kuvira actually got a redemption arc in the comics (Ruins of the Empire). Basically not everyone from Kuvira's army surrendered after Kuvira gave up. Korra temporarily took Kuvira out of prison, because Kuvira said she would help end the Earth Empire for good. She actually did help and had a change of heart, finally pleading guilty for her own crimes at the end of the comic and fully accepting her punishment.
Su saw her efforts and she decided to not only forgive her, but also change her punishment. Instead of going back into maximum-security prison, Kuvira was released into Su's custody to serve her sentence under a house arrest, on the condition that Kuvira wouldn't try to escape, because she would be thrown back there again and Kuvira agreed.
It is pretty controversial when it comes to all the terrible things that Kuvira did, but I can only understand it, because of Suyin's character, since she gave second chances to criminals and she also forgave Bataar Jr pretty quickly. After all, Su took care of Kuvira since she was a child. So I find it believable that she would forgive someone who was almost like a daughter to her.

13:38 The comics go into much more detail but essentially after the war, Zuko was prepared to return the colonies the Fire Nation had taken back to the Earth Kingdom but the oldest of the colonies were close to 100 years old at that point. There were many mixed bender families so Zuko didn't want firebenders kicked out of the area. The Earth King saw this as a betrayal and this almost sparked a new war. To make a long story short, Aang negotiated the idea of Republic City as a way to show no one nation was above another with that territory. So technically Kuvira is right that it was Aang's decision, but wrong that the lands were stolen because it was done with the approval of both the Fire Lord and the Earth King.

For me, it's the fact that both the moment to moment and the overarching writing just isn't that great. Plotlines tend to alternate between meandering and being heavily rushed, and network restrictions can't be used as an excuse for all of them. The writing just isn't great, and doesn't hold a candle to the original series. It also manages to be in this really weird position where it simultaneously relies way too much on nostalgia bait, but also doesn't answer many of the critical questions that fans wanted answered (in fact, sometimes the writers seem to enjoy teasing potential answers and then denying them for no discernable reason.) The characters aside from Korra and Tenzin (and Lin somewhat) are largely just cardboard cutouts with no discernable arcs or consistent motivations. Mako could probably be removed from the show entirely and very little would change. Bolin just... isn't funny. I wish he was, but he isn't as a consequence of the mediocre writing, and when being the comic relief is like half his character that's a really bad thing. Asami is basically the dictionary definition of wasted potential, from the beginning her character could have been insanely complex and they just threw it away. And Korra, despite being by far the strongest character in the show, seems to go through the same arc every single season. It gets grating after a while, having to be told that she's holding herself back, she's stronger than she thinks, she's her own person, etc. 8 million times throughout the show, yet she refuses to actually learn from her mistakes. Yes, it's somewhat realistic. No, that doesn't make it quality character writing. The writers reset her arc every season because they couldn't think of any more interesting directions to take her character, which is quite sad.
Tl;dr Aaron Ehasz was the heart and soul of ATLA, and his absence from Korra is REALLY noticeable. It suffers hard from not having a clear vision for its story, characters, and world, and could have benefitted from a few more passes in the writer's room.

The world har changed so much since Korra was made. Then people couldn't handle any talk about PTSD, feeling weak or that it could somehow be a sign of strength not to kill your enemy. I think younger generations are so much more accepting of Korra's inner journey as the Avatar. It even turns out all the relationshiptrouble people hated, also made for decent backstories and charactergrowth.

Korra and Asami are canonically in a relationship ^^
There've been many hints throughout the show, and though they sadly were not allowed to put in a kiss (or a relationship at all for that matter), they defied Nickelodeon and managed to implement it in a way where for a layman it looks like just friends, but if you actually pay attention to their dynamic, they are way into each other (both bisexual, somehow that's even "worse" to companies, heck, even just in society's view, than just straight up lesbians. It's a weird stigma)

    • @Undomaranel
      @Undomaranel 21 день назад

You speak like someone who has no idea about what sex does or what a relationship is. Sending letters, complimenting hair, running away and fighting alongside each other does NOT make up for the FACT that Korra kissed and stole Asami's boyfriend fir the sheer thrill of it. Women do not forget like that, let alone whatever "hetero lense" Bryke wanted to insult and gaslight fans with to prove how woke and supportive they totally were the whole time smh.
They wanted to give Nick a middle finger over how they treated the show... and what better way than rewriting everything into something taboo forever remembered (unlike Xena and Gabrielle... I lost my heroines when that happened). Korrasami is a thing because they wanted to be in the textbooks for representation, not because they were fighting the man for rights but for infamy at the LGBTQ+ community's expense. They profited off you and you defend them still...
And for your info, bisexuality is stigmatized because of what it does to the family. Kids deserve a stable upbringing raised by the mother and father who gave of themselves and invited those children into their lives. Being bi? It prioritizes sex and adulthood over what sex makes and what's best for them. I'm freaking Aroace and I can tell you that from logical thinking alone. What are you doing that you're worshipping attractions rather than seeing what it leads to and the lives ruined by selfishness? (Which is the whole reason hetero normative is the norm, it's simply the natural way babies are made and adults who can put aside their freaky desires enough to provide for a family actually contribute to society instead of making menaces for the neighbors to raise...)
If something is taboo there is a reason for it. Stop rolling your eyes and flocking like a good sheep and use that brain of yours to figure out why, then make an informed decision rather than an indoctrinated one. You're better than being part of a mob.

The deal with the Republic is after the war, Zuko originally promised to hand over the Fire Nation colonies taken from the Earth Kingdom at the start of the war. However, since they've been settled there for a long time now, many didn't want to leave and be relocated back into the Fire Nation. Thus, Aang and Zuko decided to form a new government. Republic City is the colony of Yu Dao, where this whole drama first kicked off. As such, the Earth Kingdom did kinda get cheated out of their territory. It was originally theirs, and instead of getting it back after the war, it was just siphoned off into some new nation. Details of these can be found in the graphic novels.

The story of how the united republic came to be is actually deeply complex and complicated. It’s a huge, if not even THE plot point in the comic „The Promise“ I believe.
(Spoilers if you want to read the comic)
Long story short - Aang and the gang want to dissolve the fire nation colonies within the earth kingdom. Zuko though soon realises that the people there, having lived in a fire nation/earth kingdom duality for up to three generations now, don’t actually want to „go back“ to being earth kingdom only - since in their daily lives and context, they’re NOT earth kingdom.
Aang and the others don’t realise this so soon and even fear that Zuko is losing grip on balance for the world - it almost escalates into a full blown war again, but can eventually be resolved.
The compromise they all agreed to finally was to make the fire nation colonies neither fire nation, nor earth kingdom, and make it independent instead: the united republic.
In a way, if you squint, you could understand Kuviras argument that the united republic is stolen land - because it was stolen at some point. However one cannot ignore the circumstances that the actual people have been living in after a 100 years.

Repeating what I've said elsewhere about LoK:
Korra is my favorite Avatar universe character, because of her flaws and the sincere effort she made to overcome and grow beyond the narrow constraints she was raised within.
Kuvira is, in a real sense, Korras most "real nemesis", she is the dark reflection of Korra, if she had never tried to get past her rigid, headstrong nature , and a false sense of self righteousness would have doomed her to being a dictator, justified "for the greater good". S1 Korra would never throw herself on a grenade to save her mortal enemy, S4 Korra had developed compassion and mercy. She's my Avatar.

And the music when Mako's sacrificing himself. I just love this score so much. 💕 I couldn't find any comments talking about this, but Korra and Asami were the first depiction of an LGBTQIA+ relationship in an American cartoon. Only 9 years ago, isn't that wild? It was monumental at the time, even as just a hand-holding scene. I feel like they paved the way for the representation we have in American cartoons today. 💕

    Second comment, sorry, but:
Korra is my favorite avatar. I love Aang and the gang, don't get me wrong, but Korra and her struggles hit on such a more personal level for me than Aang's did
I love Korra's arcs, I love team Avatar (Asami, Bolin and Mako), and man do I love the ever living frick out of the villains (season 2's villains were the "weakest" I guess, but even then I really didn't dislike Unalaq or Vaatu)
Zaheer stands high as the best villain in all of ATLA for me. Terrifying, smart, an actual good ideal but sadly goes too far in it, impacts Korra in the heaviest way.
I like Kuvira second, as she stands for what Korra would've been if Korra hadn't changed. I think it's really smart that the show ended with her as the villain, to contrast with Korra on how much she's changed.
Amon was awesome but I feel like he could've benefited from surviving at the end of season 1 to return later. I know why he was killed off and I loved the scene of Tarrlok killing his brother, but still, I feel he could've maybe joined up with Zaheer or something.
And lastly, the biggest villain for Korra I think are her traumas. Season 4 being all about healing, and it actually taking a lot of time to portray her struggles, and showing how there are no simple solutions like "oh there's still some poison in your body, just bend it out and it's fixed"
But even season 1 already had her traumatized. The way she was afraid of Amon and how she actually lost her bending to him
Lastly I love how they brought back the old cast. A big player every season. Katara (and Aang, Toph and Sokka in flashbacks) in season 1, Iroh in season 2, Zuko in season 3 and Toph in season 4.
Overall while LoK isn't necessarily perfect due to the studio interference, I absolutely adore it for what it is, and as said, even love it slightly more than ATLA. (again, I love ATLA too, I just think LoK gets more personal and I connected with the characters much better)

Your summation of Korra’s character arc seems very well informed. She’s a radically different person, and easily worthy of great respect. It was great to watch this series along with you and your observations, as it was with ATLA. It’s difficult to imagine a better experience for a “reaction” channel.
Of course, that also raises where to go from here. There are few series that can approach this level of depth or quality…The West Wing, Battlestar Gallactica…without resorting to really graphic violence, as in the Sopranos or (to a lesser extent) Daredevil. There’s one - Andor - that really is worth your time.
p.s. It’s too bad the Korra/Asami relationship was deemed too risky to develop earlier.
p.p.s. “Eviscerate”, meaning to disembowel, to remove the entrails, found its way into your commentary at least four times here, which isn’t necessarily a problem, but since it’s you, was a bit surprising.

About Korrasami, it's the production's fault, not the creators who wanted to do their love relationship in season 3-4. It was before the mariage equality in the USA.

the land Zuko and Aang used to create the united republic were fire nation colonies in the earth kingdom, including the very first colony Avatar roku found out about during the time of fire lord Sozin. The fire nation citizens had already integrated too heavily with the earth kingdom, so Zuko couldn't deport them back to the fire nation without tearing apart familiys, plus other were many integrated families at the time with both earth kingdom and fire nation heritage. that's when Aang, Zuko, and Earth King Kuei collaborated to make republic city and the united republic. a place where all benders and non benders can live together.

38:11 i love the entire kuvira vs korra fight but especially this little moment here! avatar has always been so amazing at fight choreography, and it's been one of my favorite pastimes to take note of how characters' fighting styles change over time as they learn and grow, and spend more time with benders of other elements to influence them. this is most apparent in season 3 of the last airbender in particular; my favorite moment is the katara vs hama fight, when we see two waterbenders redirect each other's attacks as per waterbending fighting styles until katara stands her ground and completely obliterates a huge water attack much like an earthbender would. this takes hama off guard and allows katara to gain the upper hand, since she was clearly not expecting a waterbender to use earthbending techniques and ideology in the fight. it's a very neat way of showing character development without saying anything out loud. and anyway, i love the moment at 38:11 because it shows very clearly how kuvira and korra's places of origin have influenced their fighting style. kuvira is bending the metal in a very brutal, efficient earthbender way, but korra bends the metal like it's water--which makes so much sense for someone born in the water tribes! it's just very cool to me because korra is the first avatar able to bend metal (that we've seen, unless aang learned it as an adult) and she uses her knowledge of other elements as a base.

The formation of Republic City was treated in the post-ATLA comics; As far as I know, setting up the city was difficult because the land was part of the Fire Nation colonies and there were intercultural pairs living in harmony there, iirc the original colony that Republic City was based on was called Yu Dao; The Gaang needed a lot of clout to convince the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom to rescind the claim to the land, and it ended up messy anyway; there are many reasons someone like Kuvira might consider the land stolen from the Earth Kingdom.

Your Answer to the question of Aang stealing the land, it’s the subject of a (not very good) comic. The fire Nation colonised that land in the early stages of the hundred year war, people of fire nation and earth kingdom descent live there. The war’s tensions mean The Earth King doesn’t want the fire nation living in his country and Aang can’t just kick all the Firebenders out, especially since there are several Firebenders who have started families, including with earth kingdom citizens. He eventually decides to make a new nation that accepts all people (in theory) and begins the transformation of the United Republic and the construction of Republic City

    • @keyblademasterclark
      @keyblademasterclark 21 день назад +5

  • @MalevolentFae

There is a world out there where the Legend of Korra would have been the perfect sequel to the Last Airbender. It dabbled into many of the same ideas, but it lacked the dedication to exploring them further. Some of the best aspects of the show were Korra's growth with her struggles and trauma being conquered. The step into industrial revolution was a great decision. Amon and Zaheer made for memorable villains, even though their writing could get a bit shaky. Kuvira was somewhat basic, which is a shame for the last season. The short story arc of Vaan was nice, but it would have made for a better prequel series to the franchise in my opinion. I was not too impressed with the combination of the physical and spirit world. It felt like there had to be a bigger focus regarding spirits, even another spirit villain of sorts after the world connected, but Vaatu already was the biggest strongest evil spirit of them all.
In a perfect world, Vaatu would have made for a great villain for the last arc, but doing that would require for a full rewrite of the 3 last seasons or a whole new direction for the series. And speaking of rewrites, the romance aspect is probably the most divisive or overall panned part of the show. I don't understand why writers want to inject teen drama where it drives down the rest of the show. Even if you'd dislike Aang and Katara's writing in ATLA, the romance writing of Korra and Mako was basically a punishment to the viewer by comparison. Korra stumbling unfortunately did not allow for the show to get the Earth and Fire avatar series it would have deserved, and I can only deduce that the mismanagement of Nickelodeon and even the creators lead to this. Fortunately there is a resurgence with the live action TV show and some rumors of a 3rd series? I've not been keeping up with the Avatar fandom since the end of Korra.

I love Korra as an Avatar. So many people I knew when this show was coming out hated her simply because she wasn't Aang. Korra's journey and personality reminds me a lot of myself and my journey through growth through pain and hardship.

The United Republic were former Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom. It was agreed upon by Earth King Kuei, Avatar Aang, and Fire Lord Zuko that the colonies would be turned into its own semi-independent nation as to not displace the colonists who have since married and made families with Earth Kingdom natives for the last hundred years.

Like Zuko finding his mom, visiting Azula in her new prison life, Aang trying to calm the fire nation colonies in the earth kingdom which didn’t wanted to be ether fire nation or earth kingdom and more. People understandably like AtLA more, but I have always said that I enjoyed LoK way more. Not because it has better writing, not because I like its characters more (4/5 of my faves are in AtLA), and not because it was a singular coherent story. I enjoyed the themes way more, I cared about the main character more, and the action/visuals were far more striking. I can recall twice in AtLA when I was really impressed with the visuals (Ba Sing Se for the first time, Western Air Temple) but it happened far more often in this show. I also just enjoy Korra more as a character over Aang. The more time that goes by, the less I resonate with Aang and the more I resonate with Korra. Her in Book 3/4 when she was angry never came off to me the same way as it did in Book 1/2 because it felt more deserved. Book 1/2 Korra's anger was always "I'm not getting what I want, so GIVE it to me!" whereas in Book 3/4 it was more "I believe this thing is morally right, and you're stopping that from happening!" instead. I can appreciate that much more. Aang just...... feels more childish the more I rewatch, not because he's young but because he makes decisions children think are right, and no not just Book 1 Aang. This series will always hold a more special place in my heart despite AtLA being better, and I will always hate Nickelodeon for stifling Korra the way they did; it's the one thing I can point all of my ire toward when people talk about how the show isn't as good.
On the other hand, Korra and Asami shown being together-together will remain one of my most influential life events. It would take something really big and great to dethrone. Ever since, it's helped me really solidify my identity and how I view my own feelings toward people, at least partially. I think if Asami were a guy, there wouldn't be any question at all about whether (s)he were romantically involved with Korra by the end. That acknowledgment and recognition is my litmus test for react channels: if they notice and enjoy it, they go on my "good" list, and if not then they are kicked to the curb. My reaction these days is to invoke the "roommates" joke and move on because I don't have time for that anymore.
Overall, I'm always happy when someone enjoys the current Avatar universe. Nobody I've talked to or watched has actively regretted watching both shows because the universe itself is so rich and awesome. I'm so looking forward to what they're coming out with in the future, though maybe the next show over anything else.

Season 4 humbled her a bit, yet that was relly due to Season 3.
Plus, what you've said about the Avatar was explored more in TLAB comics. Aang definitely did a lot to change the world after the 100yr War. He had to heal the world and restore balance.
