Like Toy Story, I loved following these really relatable characters in a setting that felt so unique and creative. The message of following your gut and never giving up on yourself was also very inspiring. Enjoy :)

Fun fact: Pixar would through Easter eggs into their movies, particularly ones from their own movies. So yes, the trailer in which Randall was thrown in is the same one. And the truck parked right next to it is a Pizza Planet
And thus The Pixar Theory was born
You should do Finding Nemo next... you're comments about Pixar made me remember the first time I saw Finding Nemo. I was already an adult and I cried like a baby 😅 it's still one of my favorite Pixar
I think he's already seen it, but if not I would also love a reaction!
Kevin Spacey does such a stellar job as Hopper 👍🏽
As soon as he said "Whose idea was this?!" I got chills and cringed 😮
I had a random flashback while watching this to one of my earliest core memories. I was 3 and went to Disneyland for the first time, and I was so terrified of the grasshopper animatronic in the 3D/4D show based on this movie that my mom had to take me outside after he showed up. I just found a video of that attraction and I can definitely see why I was so scared of that animatronic! It's probably for the best we left then, since it actually got much scarier after that. I wonder now if that explains my aversion to animatronics, mannequins, and masks throughout my child and teen years....
🐛 Another really good Disney film that involves a group of cute talking (and singing) insects is "James & The Giant Peach" (1996). 🍑 Like the "Toy Story" franchise, it also features a lot of catchy tunes by Randy Newman. I think you would especially enjoy it because most of the vocal talent is British. 😎👍
It is sad how fast they change their minds. People can be very fickle too. Reminds of a the japanese drama "class 3a all of you are hostages from now on" you should react to it.
Yes! One of my all-time favorite movies❤
John Ratzenburger is the voice of Hamm (the pig) in Toy Story. After Toy Story came out, he was asked to also voice PT Flea here in Bug's Life. Both were huge hits and he became Pixar's 'lucky charm'. He has voiced a character in every single pixar film to date
Mr Pigs names is Hamm?! 😂
Didn't Andy call him Evil Dr. Pork Chop 🤣
Everybody knows his name 😉😂😂😂😂
@@reysgotplans5005 Yes but Andy has names for the villianous (of his imagination) characters like Potato Head being 'One Eyed Bart' as well as initially calling Jessie 'Bazooka Jane' at the end of Toy Story 2.
At the beginning of Toy Story 2 as Buster finds Woody, he calls out "How did he do Hamm?" and the piggy bank reads off the SpeakEasy the recorded time.
On top of that I do believe at the end of Toy Story 3 when Andy is giving the toys to Bonnie he does call him 'Hamm', noting that he will keep your money safe as well as the fact he is also aliased as "The Evil Doctor Porkchop".
In fact, PIXAR was finalizing post-production of The Incredibles when they realized that John Ratzenberger was missing. They wrote, recorded, animated, and added the final scene with The Underminer in a mad rush to avoid releasing a film without him in it.
5:04 although Flick seriously messed up by breaking the altar and loosing the food. I wonder why the heck would they keep the offering so damn close to a cliff😂
To be fair, it is pretty much the highest point on the island barring the tree itself (or at least the highest point not covered in grass)
This film is loosely based on one of Aesop’s Fables, The Ant and the Grasshopper, where the hardworking ant has stored up food for the winter while the grasshopper spent the summer singing and dancing, and so has no food come winter.
This only just occurred to me watching this reaction. Classic Pixar with some hidden deeper meaning or inspiration to their works!
It’s also based on a Japanese movie The Seven Samurai about a group mistaken for warriors.
@@huntersherwood4845And by extension, the Western remake, The Magnificent Seven. Especially when it comes to the epic Western-style tracks of the score, like the fanfare motif when Flick leaves the island and when they’re lifting the fake bird.
Hard to believe this was only Pixar’s second movie. You can tell they were still developing their style, but still being ahead of the curve, even then.
Plus, say what you will about Kevin Spacey, but he does a great job as the villain.
Kevin Spacey is an amazing actor. I love everything that I've seen him in. A shame he's a questionable person irl
Oh yeah, I don't think anyone denies that he's a *phenomenal* actor, especially when playing a villain. Shame it just seems that he has some villainous tendencies himself.
The complete hault and panic at the smallest obstacle is not at all exclusive to ants. Anyone who has managed a team of people has had to gently suggest we “go around the leaf.” 😅
Man this is an underrated gem! Not many people knows this movie, but it's really one of my childhood fav
Same! I wore out my video tape as a kid, I played it so much
Right?? Also hopper is an incredible antagonist
Same
Same... I loved this so much when it came out
Me too
gotta love pixar. I've heard it described as Disney does "Once Upon a Time..." and Pixar does "what if...."
Fun fact:
When grasshoppers swarm it creates a lot of heat. Under the right conditions the increase in temperature alters there genetic makeup and turns a grasshopper into a locust. Thumper, the really animalistic grasshopper that scares Dot, is actually a locust.
No way? I low key thought the leader was one bc he was a different color n bigger.
Him n the crazy 0ne r like more brown grey while everyone else is green.
Idk if it’s to differentiate them from the background characters or not but thanks for the info.
👍🏽
*Their. Also untrue
That.. That can't be true, I need some citation on that fact-
Partially true. It isn't an alteration of genes, its a rise in serotonin levels in the grasshoppers due to overcrowding due to a large number of eggs hatching at once and creating a large swarm of babies together. Locusts and grasshoppers are two different phases / forms of the same kind of creature. Has nothing to do with heat or genetics, but rather the right optimal environmental conditions conducive to leading the eggs to hatch. They won't hatch if the environment isn't survivable enough, and can remain dormant for years until it becomes suitable enough, which leads to a bunch of eggs hatching all at once.
@@eternyti That is quite interesting. Sure it sounds less interesting than "Grasshopper swarms generating so much heat that it alters their genes and turns 'em into locusts." But ya gotta respect reality instead of a fictious misunderstanding of how it works. Reality might be "disappointing" at times, but it's our reality non-the less, and we can study it and learn interesting facts from it regardless. Though I didn't know Grasshoppers and Locusts were two different phases or forms of the same kind of creature, that's cool.
I heard somewhere that Toy Story, A Bug's Life, and Finding Nemo were all thought up by Pixar at the same time, sitting in a café, on a single sheet of paper.
The idea that would eventually become Wall-E apparently was thought up during that lunch as well.
This movie holds a special place in my heart. I'll never forget to pretend I'm just a seed.
But it's a rock.
@rachelthompson7430 I KNOW ITS A ROCK just just just pretend it's a seed for a second
Hmph. Must be a circus thing.
for some reason I was majorly obsessed with this movie as a kid. watched multiple times a week, I could quote the whole movie, and often did. Hopper was sooooo cool.
“A Bug’s Life” is one of my favorite Pixar films. It might not be quite as hard hitting or nostalgic (for others) as some others, but I have fond memories of it. I always have fun watching it, and we used to have a computer game on it, which definitely was a factor in why I enjoy it.
Also, Hopper is an amazing antagonist.
This movie is such a good comedy, I quote it often.
my favorite: "No Harry No! Don't look into the light! I can't heeeelp it, it's so beauuutiful - aaaaaaa"
Another fun fact: This basic plot (small community is oppressed and seeks outsiders to help defend them) seems to really be loved by Hollywood as it's been used in a ton of movies. It originates from an old black and white Japanese movie called "Seven Samurai." To name a few movies that follow this plot: Magnificent Seven, The Three Amigos, Galaxy Quest , Tropic Thunder, and of course A Bug's Life. I think a lot of the comedies were inspired by "The Three Amigos" because the outsiders are usually actors.
Galaxy Quest is great, would love to see his reaction to it
@@RedneckPrinceoftacticoolnesssame.
Also the B movie Battle Beyond The Stars, which is almost a direct remake of The Magnificent Seven IN SPACE!
I must have seen a different tropic Thunder than you
Hoppers “They out number us 100 to 1.” Speech is still accurate af
This movie has a special place in my heart. When I was little, for some reason we had this movie on VHS at home in Mexico in its original language. I loved it so much that I watched it at least once a day until I learned the dialogues even if I didn’t know a single word in English. Let’s say this movie was my introduction into my second language 😅 Amazing reaction by the way
It's rather unfortunate this movie tends to be forgotten by a lot of folks as it still holds up quite well. But from what I can recall this movie, although still recognized as good back in the day, never caught on the way Toy Story did so there wasn't really much demand for a sequel. Which is a shame since it's relatively equal to the first Toy Story in regards to quality, likeable characters, and interesting story elements. Though I suppose an argument could be made A Bug's Life doesn't necessarily need a sequel as realistically, the ant colony really shouldn't have future issues in dealing with other insects. And the circus bugs were able to regain joy and purpose in their work as performers.
this movie's so good, my movie direction professor used it as an example when we were learning how the different arcs in a movie are split, and how the character's decisions basically mark when the next arc begins. Flik is such a rounded character because at the end of the movie, when he's confronting Hopper, it is ACTUALLY the same scene and nearly the same setting as in the beginning, when he stops Hopper from bullying Dot. except that in the end he doesn't back down!
love ur reactions as always!!
I don't know how this movie gets so overlooked! I've always thought it was a wonderful gem with a great message!
In the beginning with the situation with the leaf references the fact ants navigate through primarily scent trails, which when scout ants branch out and manage to find food or something of interest, they drag their abdomen along the ground back to the colony which makes other ants follow their previous trail and thus make a line back and forth. When you drag your finger across an ant 'line' it disrupts that scent trail, so they get visibly confused and try to find the trail again and 'get lost' until they detect the same trail.
The most extreme cases make an ant 'Death Spiral', in where a bunch of ants follow a straggler and the straggler winds around in a circle where the scent trail meets with a previous one, and they constantly revolve following each other's scent in a huge revolving circle of hundreds of ants until they die from exhaustion or they manage to dissipate and reform back to the colony trail.
So the guy's panic in being lost is silly but warranted lol
I rewatched this childhood beloved movie a few months ago and still loved it so much!! the amount of details I lost as a kid (specially watching a dubbed version) is incredible! the praying mantis being with a butterfly to avoid being killed by a female praying mantis is a personal favorite
Title "I like bugs now?"
Me wanting him to get into Starkid and watch Starship 👉👈
I feel like he needs to watch all disney and pixar before watching starkid/lh
Its always a sweet movie. I remember collecting books when i was little that continued with mini stories after the movie took place. Fun Fact: This movie happened to be part of a little war with DreamWorks, to which they had created the movie Antz to rival against this film.
The innovation of this film was the first home video release to be created entirely using a digital transfer, converting each frame of animation from the film's computer data instead of using the standard analog process. The movie also used a larger footage rendering server, more animators, and more shots than Toy Story. 😊
You mentioned those hoppers' creepy legs and then talked about your greatest fear. And I was first like 'Your greatest fear is having long legs?' ^^;
Underrated childhood classic. Glad you watched it.
Two movies and a short were the inspiration for this movie: The Seven Samurai, Three Amigos (which composer Randy Newman worked on) and The Ants and the Grasshopper (the Disney Silly Symphony based on the Aesop fable of the same name), with the last having the twist of what if the grasshopper demanded food from the ants rather than asking for it.
Me: What? How can he not have seen A Bug’s Life as a child? It’s a classic!
Also me: *Remembering I’m actually old now and this young guy probably wasn’t even born until the year 2000 or something* 😮 🤦♀️
Ehh I was born in 2000 and this movie was one of my favorites that I would watch at 5 years old on our DVD player. I would legit watch it multiple times in a day, lol.
I assume this guy just never liked watching TV or movies as a kid or something.
Denis Leary as the Ladybug- priceless!!
"OH YEAH? WELL I OUTTA -- Hey, you know what, you're right." 😂
"Have you been playing all summer? You think this is a game?! Well guess what... you. Just. Lost!" Is the game over screen to the original Playstation game of a bugs life
Okay but why is this movie funnier as an adult 😂😂😂
it is a forgoten Pixar classic among the new generations because of everything that came after like The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Wall-E.
For me personaly I grew up with this movie in the 90s as a kid, and I loved it as it was Pixar's second movie. Not only did I liked the movie as a kid, I remember it had a cool videogame too for the PC.
I'd forgot how many big name actors voiced these characters. Phyllis Diller. Roddy McDowell. Etc.
RIP:
Phyllis Diller (the Queen)
Joe Ranft (Heimlich the caterpillar)
Jonathan Harris (Manny the praying mantis)
Madelyn Kahn (Gypsy the moth)
Roddy McDowell (Mr Soil the supervisor ant)
... and finally, Kevin Spacey (Hopper)'s Hollywood career. 💀
Really clever move for Pixar's early films to choose their stories in order to work within the limitations of CGI technology. They could only achieve so much at the time, in terms of lighting and geometry, so the resulting renders would make the 3D objects appear glossy and flat like plastic. To avoid the uncanny valley and keep a sense of immersion, they based their stories on plastic toy characters in Toy Story and insect characters in A Bug's Life that have hard, shiny exoskeletons. With the massive success of Toy Story, the technology advanced exponentially with each film; Bug's Life, for example, has more complex lighting in the environment. CGI history is super fascinating!
This is the most underrated of Pixar films. I love it, my kids love it, and it never gets dated like some other films. The message is fantastic too. Too bad all of us ants don't stand up as well.
Weird time to request but here goes, I would love to request The Last Starfighter. It's an 80's film that I caught on tv the other day and I think you'll love it and the message even though it's dated, the message is universal.
Thanks again for another lovely Cocoa Couch episode!
Edit: Watching this movie as an adult is like watching it for the first time. I didn't know how much sarcasm and jokes were in this movie.
I was just thinking about this movie the other day. Mostly about Hopper being the most evil Pixar villain. Idk why haha.
This was Roddy McDowell's last film.
This is definitely one of my favorite Pixar movies. Flik's speech to Hopper near the end is one of my favorite monologue's in film and gives me goosebumps everytime.
Surpassingly underrated. I remember seeing this in the theater as an almost-30yo and I've loved it ever since. I cannot understand why people think this is the weakest of Pixar's output. To this day, I still regularly use Hopper's flat monotone delivery of "now that's... funny" in my everyday speech.
People think it's weak? I've always loved this one!
People probably think this is the "weakest" of Pixar's work because it's the weakest one they've heard of.
Also, the second movie the studio made being its weakest? I think that's a good thing. 😊 Means they've only gotten better!
Kevin Spacey can always be terrifying. Seven… this… 21 (sort of). He just has a mastery of intimidation.
This movie made grasshoppers, rain, and birds terrifying as a kid😅
Please watch Goodnight Mr Tom!! As far as I know nobody has reacted to it yet. It's one of my favourite films ❤❤
I love Radiator Springs Racers at Disney's California Adventure, but I will always remember when Heimlich's Chew Chew Train was there.
I haven’t seen this one since I was a kid, but I STILL think about the final confrontation between Flik and Hopper all the time! It’s so relevant to OUR experience as humans, even in the 21st century. There will always be a small handful of elites who think it’s their right to make us do whatever they want. But we CAN stop them! It’s one of the most timeless tales there is.
This one has always been one of my favorites. I hope you eventually get to James and the Giant Peach!!!! It's perfect in every way.
I was sooooo terrified of these grasshoppers as a child💀 the “they come, they eat, they leave” part scared the shit out of me lol
41:54 - 42:12 Honestly thank you for bringing that up. I think film communities as a whole, pretty much say, "Yeah, the liar-reveal trope is a pretty bad and annoying storytelling device." And yeah i agree, but I honestly thinks it works enough here. I've never fully described why it works here, (Aside from Flik's anxiety panic, because for as brilliant and inventive as he is, he isn't delusional and does recognize his faults and mistakes. From the moment he talks with Dot we can already see self-doubt and disappointment seeping through. And when he realizes he royally screwed up, he fears that he'll never make a difference if they find out he messed up again. Of course we all know "One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it," and it does come true. Sorry for that long analysis, but I honestly am Flik. Just a geek how loves gushing about I things I'm passionate about and just wants to help in anyway I can.) but what you said in your review perfectly sums it up, "It is annoying but it's good." Your analysis between Flik and Atta and combined with the misunderstandings the film presents and how it does work is the perfect fair analysis. Yeah it is annoying, but honestly it's through hardships that we learn the most crucial lessons ever. (I would know.) And honestly that is life sometimes the truth can throw you for a loop and ruin your confidence. That honestly bring me back to this quote; "Society is like a cloth, and the lies are the thread which are holding it together. Pull thread, civilization unravels."
33:43 You know, I always remembered knowing that Hopper was particularly afraid of birds because of his previous attack. But until this moment it didn’t even occur to me that the fake eye injury was also designed to extra freak him out, not just making him think the threat is actually real, but a bird was the one who damaged Hopper’s eye. So it’s a bird attack and then “omg my eye!” for double emotional damage 😂
If you like this movie, you also have to watch "Robots" (not I-Robot) but actually Robots, which was made by "Blue Sky Studios", so from a completely different studio, but also a good movie. The main character here is just a bit similar to that in Robots, but that doesn't make it a bad movie. Actually, I kinda like Robots more in comparison.
If you didn't watch it, it would be cool to see your reaction to this... (btw also, if you already watched it maybe)
I love watching your reactions! 🩵
If you don’t mind, I will you give you some movie suggestions…
TRUE STORIES :
Midway (with Ed Skrein)
Deepwater Horizon (with Mark Wahlberg)
OTHER :
Night at the Museum (with Ben Stiller)
Ready Player One (with Tye Sheridan)
Jungle Cruise (with Emily Blunt)
Brave (with the voice of Kelly Macdonald)
If there are any of these that you have not seen, if you want, you could react to them on your channel. 😁
It's easily one of the most underrated pixar films! Watched this a ton growing up. Excellent film!
Actually one of my favorite Pixar movies. I realized while watching that Hopper's brother is the same voice actor as Bing Bong in Inside Out. (Have you watched that one yet?) Also, I'm pretty sure that the really big bug is Brad Garrett.
I know Kevin Spacey did Hopper for some reason I kept thinking it was James Woods. But after watching Hercules I realize that James Woods might have been a little too comedic for Hopper because he comes off as a sociopathic killing machine and I think Kevin Spacey did a better job with that type of character
Hey I just want to say that I love your channel and your reactions and positivity! Definitely one of the best movie reaction channels on RUclips. It’s been nice having your videos to watch when I’m not feeling so good :)
The interesting thing is that a movie called Antz was being released at a similar time.
Also when looking back on this, if Hooper allowed the new queen to blame him, both their problems would've been settled without the person looking to start the revolution
If you like this one, another underrated gem is Disney’s Dinosaur. I highly recommend you check that out, if you have time :) it’s my favorite one
AHH, I'm hyped! After these, you should watch Ant Bully if you haven't watched it yet, it's SO fun.
I clicked SO FAST the moment i saw this. Its such a gem of a movie
My favorite youtuber when I think about films and series reactions
This movie was one of my favourites as a child, as I would watch it constantly. Rewatching it, I think one of the big reasons was the sound design. The water espically, or just the certain movements of the bugs, was so good! I think I enjoyed the grasshoppers a lot as well, and the antogonist was such a great problem, yet definitely has his particular personality. The scene with the seeds, where he made a point to his crew was always haunting and a great scene.
I definitely don't want to jinx it, but I glad they never tried remaking or doing a sequel to this movie. It ended the best way it could.
You are the best movie reactor on YT. Your emotional intelligence and personality make you stand out from the rest. Never change 😊
The reaction was very funny
Is it possible to make a reaction to “Monster in Paris” someday? As far as I know, there hasn’t been a reaction to this cartoon yet
This was my childhood "burn out the VHS tape" movie. I have a 2.5 ft Flick.
This movie holds a special place in my heart. My brothers and I say "WHERE'S THE FOOD?!" all the time.
Also, I feel like Hopper was huge inspiration for my first like real villain character.
React on movie the
mummy plz
Just found your channel yesterday and already subbed. Great work mate!
Would love to recommend 1998 film Soldier with Kurt Russell. Sci-fi action film, about a man taken from birth to become a warrior, only to be thrown away and learning throughout to become more civil.
Fun fact. The queen carrying around a pet aphid is actually kind of accurate. Some species of ant actually domesticate and breed aphids like cattle even going as far as gathering them up and taking them with them of they move the colony. They force the aphids to eat until they are full and then milk them for the sugary excretion they get from plants
Love this movie. One Pixar's best vocal castings. Julia Louie-Dreyfuss, Haden Panterrier, Madeleine Khan, Bonnie Hunt, Tony Jay and legendary Phyliss Diller.
Please do Antz , flushed away and gnomeo and juliet , lion king 1&2
React to The Haunted Mansion movie (2023) movie next ❤❤❤
Besides Toy Story 3 and Onward, A Bug's Life is hands down my favorite Pixar film. And in my opinion it's the best one.
I hadn't seen this as an adult.... its kinda sad how close to reality some of these things are lol
Based on Seven Samurai/Magnificent 7/Battle Beyond the Stars, of course.
I was a kid when Pixar started and Bug's life is actually the first movie I've ever seen in a movie theater! I was obsessed with Toy Story with my best friend and we went to see this as 7-year-olds and quickly got a new obsession lol! Good times! I'm so happy you liked this movie, it's aaaaaall nostalgia for me!
Also majority of ants are female the males are just for the queens and thats it
My Pixar favourite!! 🐛🦋🐞🦗🐜🕷️
you should check out Antz as well. its really good
12:19 That recognition while not noticing the Pizza Planet truck from Toy Story parked right outside lol.
I have always loved this movie. I remember how terrifying the grasshoppers were as a kid and they really balance them out as scary and funny.
Dude, have you seen megamind? It’s a great film
He just have the most delightful laugh - makes me wanna give him a hug and laugh along 🤗
Please react to Turning Red!
Grew up watching it and love it
The fact that this is technically an adaptation/homage to Seven Samurai/The Magnificent Seven just makes this even better for me. Even if there are two extra members of the group.

You just going through all the Pixar movies :)? Most of them are really good. 6:05 voice of Bing Bong from Inside Out. Pixar reuses a lot of actors for other movies quite often.
I KNEW I RECOGNIZED IT FROM SOMETHING!! THANK YOU!
@@incognitogirl6201 Aye, like the teacher in The Incredibles that tries to catch Dash is the voice of Linguini in Ratatouille. The beetle, Dim, is the voice of the puffer fish from Finding Nemo. Happens all the time with Pixar movies.
“I like bugs now” is probably the last thing an Australian would think he’d be saying
As an Australian it’s only like 5 types of bugs that I really don’t like in our country, generally bugs are awesome
