I suppose one of the advantages of Sega leaving the console wars in 2001 is that a lot of their games (especially from the Genesis era) are easy to find and play again. A majority of Sega compilations have tons of games on them, since a majority of them are first-party games developed by Sega themselves. Nintendo, on the other hand, seems to be giving their past games the Disney Vault treatment, re-releasing them for a limited time and then discontinuing them after a certain date.
In a way, to this day, Sega is continuing to do what Nintendon't.

This has been my #1 issue with Nintendo for years now. They will shut down rom sites without flinching and sue you into oblivion.. yet at the same time refuse to re-release or make their older games accessible in any meaningful way. It's so pointless to deprive the fans when we've been asking for new ways to play older games for years. Until they can figure this out, people will continue to pirate and emulate their games, and I totally encourage it.

Honestly, it feels a bit like why now game companies begin to remove older versiosn of the games from online stores the moment they announce a 'remake' or something. Like what happened with Gran theft auto. They don't want you to focus on the old stuff, since they can't make much profit from it, and they might have toa ctually offer support for the emulators they use on it. No, they want you to solely focus on the brand new shiny games, which they can sell at the price they want, and that they have more control over.

I think there's some shady stuff going on with them. Just look at Super Mario 3D All Stars... they made it a limited release game of some sloppy emulation so then fans would buy it without it even going on sale. They even had the digital version limited even though there would be an infinite amount of downloads if possible. Their NSO controllers and Amiibos all are usually low stock even though the demand is high. Wouldn't even surprise me if they have their own eBay accounts or 3rd party retailer that jacks the price up for those products to gain Nintendo some extra money

In LM3, if you suck something into the vacuum that "clogs" it (you usually shoot this out at something) you're just softlocked because the GC controller can't shoot. There isn't a button for it and no remapping. I'm not sure if there's anything else game breaking, but I know it's impossible to beat the game with a GC controller as a result.

A lot of the problems here seem to be made on purpose rather than out of rush and lack of testing (as opposed to many issues with playstation remakes).
After all, Nintendo has such a vast library of old amazing games that you could go a lifetime just scrolling through their classics paying 5-20 dollars for 15-35 year old games, and just not bother with new games at all. I'm not saying everyone would do this, but it seems to be a fear in Nintendo's hearts, that their new games will be compared unfavorably to their own legacy

    • @Duskool
      @Duskool Год назад +11

well, if that's a fear to them, then they should put actual effort into the new first party games they're releasing, because it seems more like they're trying to gaslight audiences into believing that the modern games are the best option, by not putting the older console versions so that they don't have to put as much stuff on them.
Examples of this that i can mention are the new mario golf, mario strikers and mario tennis compared to their past versions, Pokemon HeartGold and Soulsilver compared to the gen 4 remakes, just a lot less effort into content in the games.

    • @psxfoxhound
      @psxfoxhound Год назад +3

@@Bro3256 That is a good point! I just feel like the conversation is a bit deeper than that. First off Nintendo doesn't have to make us buy these games over and over again. They chose to make us do that because of their own incompetence. Also Locking the games behind a subscription service is objectively worse than just being able to pick and choose what you want based on your interest and the switches user base is so big, diverse, and young you have many people who own a switch who have not played Nintendos legacy titles. People often say that adding a game to NSO will introduce new people to those games. That is Very true, but it's important to recognized that not everyone who owns a switch has NSO or will ever get NSO. Only 36 million people own NSO over the 114 million switches that have been sold. 36 million is a humongous number, a number that should not be understated and will probably grow over time, but it's currently not even half of the amount of switches that have been sold. NSO just gets in the way of how accessible these games are for many people, and I'd say they are valid in not wanting to pay for NSO. There are also increased concerns with owning these games since this is a subscription service, you are inherently giving the company more power over the media you consume. Should a game get de-listed you don't have any hope of ever getting it back since it is not something you bought on your account. There is also something to be said about using these games as an incentive to subscribe to their online service, as they should probably prioritize on actually improving their online infrastructure and social features instead. The fact that they dangle these games to us instead of doing just that I think says a lot to how much Nintendo values their legacy titles, and the fact that they get away with doing that and it's very successful just validates their own mindset of hoarding their games and exploiting people with nostalgia instead of making their system up to par with modern standards. It's why there are no themes, no chat systems, their online infrastructure sucks, Basic User interface, it took years for us to get folders. So from that perspective I think you can make the argument that the way NSO is handled does more harm than good for us. but yeah. Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm thinking about getting that game again on my homebrewed 3DS. I used to have this game on my very first blue 3DS when I was young but sadly it broke and I got a 2DS which came with the Nintendo network id setup and that was about it. Yeah it was a true story, So I'm going to get four swords anniversary edition on my modded 3DS later today.

Probably the coolest port of old Nintendo Games they did in recent times were definitely the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Pokémon games getting ported to the 3DS. Not only did they let you battle and trade with friends in these games you could finally port Pokémon from those games into the newer games. They also included the Surfing Pikachu mini game in Yellow which in the original was locked off unless you did something in Pokémon Stadium.

The objectively best thing Nintendo could do to stop piracy, get money, and respect its legacy of by releasing their own Steam-like launcher on PC that they can keep updating until everything old is there for you to buy, maybe even just copypasting popular emulators instead of developing their own, but we all know something so much sense and intelligence is basically impossible to cross their minds.

I'm just so greatful to all the dedicated fans that have worked on decompilations, emulators, improvements and mods over in the "unoffical" scene, currently the way OoT is played through the Ship of Harkinian is far better than I could have even dreamed of and this thing is still less than ONE YEAR old. And there's no sign of development slowing down on this thing either, they keep adding new features constantly. Insane amount of customization, you wanna have the game be widescreen without any weird stretching of the UI or any other oddities? You can do that. Unlocked fps? Extended draw distance so objects don't pop in right infront of your face? Go ahead. Or do you maybe want the game to be like it is originally, running at 240p in 4:3 at 20fps? Sure, you play this thing however you want to. Tons of optional gameplay customization, bug fixes and restoration's of altered things that Nintendo changed with patches to the game if you want some bugs or visual changes re-added. Built in randomizer with a tracker and now for the first time an actual enemy randomizer.
I could only imagine the things Nintendo themselves could do with the source code (well this doesn't really apply to the decomp projecst since they basically are using the source code but you know what I mean) if they only gave one little damn about the games, but no, they'd rather give us half working emulators that are objectively worse than what you can get for free on your computer right now.
Like take the NSO version of Ocarina of Time as an example, even if the decomp didn't exist, this actual piece of shit doesn't let you properly rebind your controls, TO USE THE C-BUTTONS YOU HAVE TO HOLD DOWN A BUTTON AND THEN USE THEN YOU CAN USE YOUR C BUTTONS. IT'S MIND BOGGLING, HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR BASIC CONTROLS WORSE?
Nintendo has been going down the drain quickly in my mind, just look at Mario Kart 8's new DLC, they are literally copy pasting mobile assets into the game that look like babby's first copy paste map mod you'd see in some PC game...

Then, after the DS, it seemingly stopped. Like, you can play DS on a 3DS, but everything else, you needed a classic anyways.
Even now, there is no form of in-built backwards compatibility on the Switch, like there was for every other console. It is the only modern console to have no in-built backwards compatibility, and no plans to add it. As they are currently making money for making you subscribe to the emulation system. Now, with the 3DS and Wii stores going offline, we are about to lose even more of it.

Actually, the Nintendo Ambassador Program was Nintendos way of apologizing to players who paid 250 bucks for their 3DS just before Nintendo drastically lowered the price to around 170 due to low sales. So, to accomodate the early buyers that essentially paid too much, they got 10 (S)NES games (5 NES & 5 SNES games I believe) and 10 GBA games for free after registering their 3DS' serial number online with the Ambassador Program.
The (S)NES games came first while the 10 GBA games released a while later. I remember almost counting the days til the GBA games dropped 'cause I was pretty hyped about them. Didn't and still don't really care about (S)NES games, as they only manage to entertain me for about 5 minutes before getting either utterly boring or just frustrating. They just didn't age well. The GBA games on the other hand were phenomenal. Had a blast playing Metroid Fusion.

My main gripe with N64 on Switch Online is no button mapping. Props to Nintendo's attempt at controler authenticity, but the button layout doesn't feel right for all games. With Z mapped to ZR, and L to L, twisting and rolling in Star Fox 64 feels wonky; same with SM64's ground pounding. Then there's the C buttons mapped to the right stick. They're perfect for a camera, but a pain in the ass for Banjo Kazooie since I can's fire my eggs straight. Same case in Paper Mario; left and right C pull up sub-menus for items and partners, up C displays your status, and down C uses your partner's ability. This too becomes slippery with the right stick. Crap! I suddenly sense how this will be absolute hell on both Pokémon Stadiums! We can only hope the right stick serves Golden Eye better...
It's for reasons like this I use Mayflash's N64 adaptor with controllers I already own rather than Nintendo's modern pricey (and scarce) one.

This is why I run emulators on my laptop and phone (and a big reason why I stick with Android as emulators can easily be found on Google Play.

Nintendo doesn't, Sony does. They don't even have backwards compatibility for christ sake.

Bro. I totally agree. They need to bring Gamcube games to the switch. I Litterally play my GameCube more than my switch, and on top of that I own more games for the GameCube than I do the switch ( which is kinda crazy because they are usually about double the price of a used switch game)!

I was kinda hoping Mario 3D All-Stars having an emulated Super Mario Sunshine would mean that GameCube rereleases would eventually become a much quicker thing like the NES, SNES and N64 libraries have been for the past 16 years, because there would no longer be a need to always fully remake the game to rerelease it, but who knows
(Also, the Wii U couldn’t emulate GameCube games… but it really didn’t need to, Wii mode already gave the Wii U the capability to natively run them, same for GBA on 3DS, the 3DS can’t emulate GBA games? Doesn’t need to, it can natively run them through DS mode, so why wasn’t this taken advantage of for virtual console?)

I think that’s also what “technically” makes Super Mario 3D All Stars a good deal, since it’s about the same price as a stand-alone GameCube copy

I believe the Gamecube era is definitly one Nintendo devs don't like, since most of these games were rushed, unpolished and sometimes weren't even made out of passion anymore.

I was fortunate to get a Copy of the Super Mario 3D All Stars physically. It was a great compilation sure it's not a complete collection, and the fact Nintendo made it a limited time run... thing.... Is absolute mental, and I can't for the life of me understand it.
    Although, I still like it.

They don't care until it comes down to people pirating the games and then it's a huge ordeal to them. They made their money off the past. Like really Nintendo?

Let's not forget they also made the only official translation of Fire Emblem 1 a limited time offer as well, because why not, right?

It’s honestly criminal how little they try for the legacy titles. Luigi’s mansion is one of my favorite game cube games ever and the only port it ever got was for the 3DS😑. It’s fine ig but the fact it could of been in switch is baffling.

The explanation is pretty simple: Nintendo hates their customers.
Seriously, Nintendo doesn't give a shit what their fans want, or what would make them happy. They target gameplay videos with takedown notices. Someone puts up an archive of scanned issues of Nintendo Power (which Nintendo no longer sells in any form) and they immediately get it taken down. Someone making a free remake of a classic Nintendo game for a niche retro system that only a select group of people care about? Nintendo will stomp on it. Unauthorized game tournament? Not on your life!
Nintendo may occasionally make good systems and games, but as a company, they royally suck ass.

I was already so snakebitten by Nintendo that I refused to buy Skyward Sword HD, bu now to hear that one of its few new improvments is locked behind an Amiibo makes me fully glad I didn't buy it. Scummy business practices like that should not be supported. Great video!

Hope the amount of people playing these games justifies further support.

And you know what Nintendo? There's been a really strong piracy scene for DECADES, so the jokes on you, we can play whatever we want, whenever we want and you don't get a cent. Get. Wrecked.
