  • This DIY backyard makeover is all about how to pour a concrete patio and install a pergola from start to finish. This modern concrete patio busted out of these concrete forms after a week of curing and this pergola from Sunjoy was a perfect way to add beauty to this backyard oasis. Bring Your Own Tools (#BYOTools 191).

It's also a good idea to go around your forms and tap them with a hammer while the cement is wet. It makes the cement flow down and fills in all the spaces.

Should have shown how you secure the four posts of the pergola to your cement pavers unless it's just free standing which I wouldn't recommend.

Great suggestion Gary and its freestanding for now. Would have bolted them down with some wedge anchors or tapcon screws but there was discussion of them slightly moving it one direction so I'll let them figure that one out first and then i can produce a YT Short for it if people are interested. Thanks so much for watching.

I appreciate this post and the product. I think what's being highlighted here is showing you products and methods that could easily be done yourself solo. The man and his brother-in-law dragged so much concrete and rock on their own to this backyard, imagine a heavy all wood pergola by yourself or with maybe one other person. I'm also certain the pergola was bolted down later, have you seen his mailbox video 😂 that thing was going nowhere. Awesome job in true BYOT fashion.

Another great project Brent. I don’t usually go for the prefab units but this one is very nice looking and seems very easy for an intermediate DIY’re to do. You are always finding these innovative products. Very much like View Rail which I hope to be able to use soon. Thanks.

I would love the ideas of leaving the forms in between if possible? I think it’s beatiful and a good barrier again weeds between the blocks.

I don't know how tall you are Brent, but that pergola doesn't look like you've got much clearance.

nice work. would u recommend 5/8 minus rock or 1/4 minus rock as a base for applying artificial grass ?

Did you screw the base on all 4 sides to the concrete base? Do I need to? Or any reason to avoid it?

Which pergola is it? I did not see from the website, it gave me a general list. the only type of pergola I want is one without a roof because I have 3 grape vines that's going on top

At the 9:30 mark, crack in concrete. Maybe rebar/ reinforcement not a bad idea?

I would have bolted those to the ground.
Those looks cheaper then build one from wood.

I'll probably build one in the future out of wood but for now these preassembled units are sooooo easy to install, which is nice sometimes haha. Thanks for watching Saul.

The author does like to from scratch, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.

I agree the original video should be edited to provide an update (and preferably a link to this video) about the issue. But I appreciate him showing us live how he is going about things. What works and what didn't.
If you are going to follow his instruction without see the full outcome that's on you.
