  • Charlie Plumb reveals techniques of resilience needed to overcome challenges of daily life. He draws parallels between your personal and professional trials and the major problems he faced as a prisoner of war; frustration, humiliation, loneliness, feelings of failure, etc.
More restrictive than his 8 foot cell, he says is our self-imposed 8 inch cell between our ears. Rather than PTSD, Plumb emerged from a life of torture, isolation and deprivations with PTG; Post Traumatic Growth.
    Learn how you can too.
Captain Charlie Plumb graduated from the Naval Academy and completed Navy Flight Training and became part of the development of “Top Gun” at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego. Five days before the end of his tour during Vietnam, Captain Plumb was shot down over Hanoi and became a Prisoner of War. He was held in captivity for 2,103 days and now speaks around the world with stories that parallel his P.O.W. experience with the challenges of everyday life. charlieplumb.c... This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Charlie Plumb has no clue who I am however he has made an unforgettable impact on my life. Charlie went to Shawnee Mission North and I went to Shawnee Mission South in Overland Park, KS. I also belonged to Nall Avenue Baptist Church and he attended that church as well. What I never will forget is when he first returned from Viet Nam and came and spoke to my class in the gymnasium. He talked of eating rolly polly bugs in water. He explained with his wire he communicated Morse Code with through wall with next cell. Turns out it was another soldier from KC. Lastly I remember the worst of all...so happy to come home only to learn his family had moved on without him. His wife had remarried. I cannot conceive all Charlie Plumb has been through. Like Dachau forever imprinted my heart and soul...so did Charlie Plumb. Thank you sir for serving, for changing my life forever, and for the freedom you have gifted my family and I today. May God richly bless you.

Debbie Austin Endecott It may be this is the basis for Tom Hanks' Castaway... He also had his wife remarry, etc... Going inside... The 6 inches between your ears. Growth after trauma is still important. Resiliency makes a hero.

We received a lecture from him (In his military uniform) in the cinema in Fallingbostel Germany before we were deployed to the first Gulf war. (Op Granby).
The lecture was focused on the details of his torture and interrogation to give us an idea of what to expect.

Thank you, Captain Plumb, for sharing your incredible experience and powerful messages with the world! Definitely gives me a new perspective and real tools to survive and thrive the challenges of my “mental box.” PTG is something that our world desperately needs. Keep spreading this profound wisdom!

You get two choices, every morning when you get up. Be a victim, or not. the rest of the day revolves around that choice .
