All about ripple trimming in Adobe Premiere Pro

  • Sometimes what we think is the best way to work, isn't, and that's why video editors around the world use ripple trimming to speed up editing. If you've been manually trimming your clips, then deleting gaps and moving clips around, you're going to love how Premiere Pro can make all that an automatic function.

    I've gone too long without using Q and W to trim. Always known it was quicker, but after years of doing it the way you initially learn when you start out, it becomes a difficult habit to fix.
    Watching this and going through the 'Cool Stuff in Premiere Pro' book recently, (all in a new enthusiasm to improve my editing speed in 2019), have both sold me on this, and the Trim window, really being the best ways to go from here. Thanks!

    Great video well explained. One thing I haven't found yet which I could do in flash was to insert frames and all the rows would be extended at the playhead. So the effect is to lengthen the footage. This only works now I think about it with still images. So maybe that's why I am having difficulty finding a way to do this. But finally I can ripple edit. But for my logic the Q and W are the wrong way around :)

      @@VideoRevealed Just got a challenge I can't seem to find an answer to here. I have finished a music video in 16:9, and want to create short teasers from the same video in 4:5 or 9:16. I have created a custom sequence in both these formats (they are mainly for Instagram stories, but the 4:5 also works on Facebook). Is there a way to convert the finished video to a new format? • @AdventuresinFabrication

    Good video, however as someone coming from Powerdirector, I would suggest that in video's like this you may want to mention handles, many editing programs don't use them, they do destructive editing. I am now going through the editing learning curve and watching video's a second time after learning the hard way that handle exist.

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  6 лет назад

      I've honestly never heard of any video editing program that was destructive. Even iMove and Movie Maker both work the same as Premiere Pro. As does Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer and literally dozens of other programs. That's also the same for every single audio editing/music composition program I've ever seen since working on computers in the 1980's.
      It may be that PowerDirector is the only program that works destructively.
      I'm happy your now in a much better editing environment!

    • @AdventuresinFabrication
      @AdventuresinFabrication 6 лет назад

      They don't delete the clips, but there are no handles, just the razor tool. There is no ripple or rolling cuts. So once you make a cut if you don't like it you need delete the clip and then put it back in and start your edit on it over again or use the undo tool..

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  6 лет назад

      Not having handles *is* destructive editing. I think that limitation is only with Powerdirector.
      CyberLink isn't really thought of as a company that makes video editing software (that's why there's no ripple/roll) as their history is DVD playback software.

    Ok here is a question for you (and everyone else reading this):
    Q: is there a way to do what you are doing @2:34... but with keyboard shortcuts to move the edit shorter/longer frame-by-frame? (The Avid equivalent of: Selecting the trim tool > choosing which side of the edit you want to effect (or both sides) > and then you would hit "roll 1 frame" (or 10 frames) keyboard shortcut to move the edit, and ripple trim everything behind it. I cannot figure out how to do the frame-by-frame part on Premiere without using the mouse to click and drag the edit once selected. HELP!

    That was very helpful, thanks!!! May I ask: if I have two clips synched on the timeline and one starts a little earlier, using Q for ripple trim, will produce a piece that is left over. Is there a way or setting that would automatically remove that too?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  3 года назад +1

      If you lock the other track, it won't be affected. If you don't have Track Targeting on (the blue V1,2), the it will leave a bit of the clip but you'll be left with an edit point at the left edge of the other clip. There's no easy way to do what you want in one step.

    So, I want to have a ripple speed duration tool. Does that exist? For example, if my previous edit is 10 seconds, if I use W then it ripple trims to 8 seconds and moves the next clip to that point in my edit. However, The 2 seconds that were trimmed I want to keep. I just want the duration of the previous 10 seconds to actually be only 8 seconds. And, I want the next clip to start after the previous clip completed its 8 seconds. Is there such a tool in Premiere? (I know about speed/duration).

      Sorry, I don't understand your question.
      The clips in the Timeline show the duration of the clip as a rectangular block on a track. The head and tail are where the clip begins and ends. Trimming and Ripple Trimming changes the duration and you see the same color as the rectangle while you're dragging it.

    • @jrmatlanta736

      @@VideoRevealed Thanks, but what I was asking, is, only a small portion of the clip on the timeline shows a preview, the rest of the clip is a solid color. Is that a setting? I thought the whole clip is a displayed as a preview. So in other words, if the clip on the timeline is 3 inches long, only an inch is shown as a preview of the clip, the other 2 inches is a solid color as displayed on the timeline. Not when played obviously.

    • @VideoRevealed

      +Anthony Congiano - Usually this is caused by linked video. Premiere Pro likes to keep everything synced so when you try certain edits, the result will put some audio tracks out of sync. You can override this by turning off global link. See screenshot and tell me if that works:

    How to link 2 clips or 2 trims together?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  5 лет назад

      You can't link clips together, you can only group them. Select clips Right-click and choose Group.
      Not sure if I'm missing your question though?

    Thanks again. I recently edited my second Premiere clip ever and I went to some trouble to edit a sequence to music with a lot of still images changing on a fast beat. Later on I would of like to swap out a clip WITHOUT rippling and upsetting the sequence. Still looking on how to do this 'quickly'. Any ideas anyone? I'm guessing it's easy but finding the solution is taking some time.

      You can easily replace any media in the Timeline by Right-clicking and choosing Replace with Clip. Here's a tutorial for ya: ruclips.net/video/jYHY15d4-QA/видео.html

    Genius!
    BUT... Can you please explain the easiest way to make it so that a video file, that has audio attached, when imported to the editor is able to be edited as one?
    I have literally spent far more time researching how to do this than all the little 3 step clicks I'm trying to save myself from.
    Ripple tool is awesome. But not when it leaves your audio track in its original position.
    I've tried linking them, grouping them, so on and so forth. It shouldn't be that hard! They should import as one attached file that edits when the other one does by default, then there should be an option somewhere to disconnect them should you want to.
    Thanks!

      You most likely have Track Targeting set incorrectly. Check that V1 and A1 are both blue before you edit on the Timeline. Also, you can check if importing brings in both the audio and the video if you see an icon that looks like a video with an audio waveform. You can also Double-click the file and play it back in the Source monitor. If you see video and hear audio, then both came in correctly. If they didn't, please check my tutorial on Troubleshooting a Project.

      Wow, thanks for the quick reply.
      The video and audio always import correctly together, if so selected to import both. They move around the timeline together when I first choose where to drop them.
      I've ensured that both V1 V1 and A1 A1 blocks are blue once dropped there as well, before I attempt any editing.
      If I try to place the ripple tool on the head, centered on both V and A tracks, then slide it, I get the message of "trim blocked on A1 or V1". Does that tell you anything?
      I'm then left with only the option to slide one or the other, thereby making it so a one click solution (as presented in this awesome video tutorial, as it should be) still takes 3 moves and deleting the leftover gap. Which basically defeats the purpose of ripple.
      Thanks again.
      If you think your troubleshooting tutorial would have the answer I'll look into it.

      Are you sure you're looking at Track Targeting and not Source Selection? Both Track Targeting and Linked Selection buttons need to be engaged. See this screenshot: imgur.com/a/gYHKf
      I'm going to play come VR games right now so I won't be available for a bit.

      EUREKA!!
      You solved it! The Linked Selection button above V1,2,3 wasn't blue! And this totally explains why sometimes it would work, and other times it wouldn't. I knew it was something tiny and dead simple. But yeah, almost 2 hours trying different things for a couple days now.
      That picture was a huge help. Subbed for sure.
      Great work on the channel and good day!

      @@VideoRevealed It works fine except that when I place my playhead on a frame and then hit "Q", it cuts out the part of the clip WITH that frame altogether. I expect it to cut things out BEFORE the frame I'm on. Am I asking too much?

    Hey Colin, thanks for the great video as always. I've been using Q & W for a while, and by default the playhead always snaps to wherever the ripple trim starts/ends. For some reason now when I hit Q or W, the playhead remains in the same place in the timeline that it was, instead of snapping to where the ripple trim starts/ends. Any idea how to fix this?

      @@VideoRevealed I want to split a video (such as 4 min 30 seconds length video) into 26 seconds interval. So each video clip should be 26 seconds in length. And last clip may not 26 seconds in length, it can be less than 26 seconds but it's doesn't matter. But except the last one other should be 26 seconds in length.

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  5 лет назад +1

      There is no automatic way to do this. You need to manually set IN and OUT points in the Timeline that are 26 seconds in duration then export. Manually move the IN and OUT points for each segment and export.
