Not me crying after this episode 😭😭😭 He is my Nans favourite artist and she has so many pieces of his around her house! So I have grown up around his work and I absolutely love it 🖤
Just watched The electrical life of Louis Wain. And discovered this beautiful podcast. This is brilliant work. And it makes me nostalgic of my times in London.
Absolutely loved this episode about Louie! As a cat lover myself I appreciate all his artwork 🐈⬛🧡 Thankfully mental health is changing! Keep up the amazing work! Been following for 6months and it’s the 1st time I’ve seen you; your beautiful voice matches your beautiful face 🧡
He may have been suffering from extreme grief - he had many losses. Sensitive people may not cope well and develop severe anxiety and even violent outbursts of rage at their loss. The 'later' cats just look like experimental art rather than evidence of psychosis.
This was a fantastic follow up to the movie! I found the dynamic between him and his multiple sisters to be so fascinating, him being the only male and eldest of the family, I’m sure that put more pressure on him than was recognized at the time. I hope more will learn about the life of Louis Wain, thanks to concise work like yours. I will definitely be taking the time to subscribe and check out more of your content, you are a phenomenal story teller, with great style I would add! 🖤
Not you making me cry this monday morning 🥲 I had no idea about him not actually having Schizophrenia! Thanks for such a wonderful and enlightening episode!! ♥️♥️♥️✨🐱🐈⬛
It made me cry whilst I was writing it too!!! Poor Louis, he just loved cats 🐈 🐈⬛ 😻 Yes, me neither until I started delving into this, I just took the story at face value! Thank YOU for watching!!!! 💗💗💗
So what if he's crazy, all the best people are! And I am not saying that just because people call me and my family crazy...Very well perhaps I am. LOL. Now I need one of his prints for our parlor! This was wonderfully done as always, you are spooktacular! Bella L
hI! just wathed the movie and now very curious.please give references for your VERY interreseting exposition? love the details (and the accent - me being in France)
Hi Jessica, thanks so much for watching and for the kind words. The sources are all listed in the description box under the video. Just scroll down to the section marked "Sources". Oh French accents are so much nicer than English ones but I'll take the compliment. :)
He had some form of psychosis. My theory is that psychosis/schizophrenia is partially is due to increased DMT production in the brain, and not due to the Dopamine Hypothesis. Its not a coincidence that his art is similar to DMT art. It also explains why schizophrenics feel more connected to the spiritual world, again another side effect of DMT.
@@MacabreLondon its all a little coincidental since cats like to trip, and when you trip, cats trip with you. cats are infamous with psychedelics. He must of used mushrooms. If he didn't then in my mind its even more coincidental that his art work is similar to psychedelic art. DMT is the only factor here, at this point I'd like to think the dopamine hypothesis was made to cover up from people learning about DMT.
I don't understand why people don't think he didn't have schizophrenia now. I have schizoaffective disorder and his symptoms sounded like mine. You don't always become completely incoherent in severe psychosis. My personality never changed either. A lot of us can actually work normal jobs and be more psychotic depending on stress levels. I'm not even medicated, but I keep communication with my doctor and he supports my decision. It is also possible to have autism and schizophrenia too. The more psychotic I was I was still able to do things like play piano well and write coherently. The doctors thought I couldn't read, but I couldnt articulate that the words that I was reading was talking to me. So my hallucinations were distracting me from doing some things, but not others. I could drive too, but it wasn't safe. It's like your split between reality and psychosis which is why it's called "split mind." There are artists I know, and artists like xoadmagical who are symptomatic, but can still draw. There just wasn't a lot of understanding of psychotic orders like there are today. They say now that those of us with schizophrenia and a mood disorder like schizoaffective disorder have a better prognosis than schizophrenia alone. The mood disorder grounds you a bit apparently. Maybe thats why.
I think there’s a big difference between the two for sure but looking at it with historical eyes, they didn’t have the same understanding we do nowadays…
Great .. more videos like this one spreading misinformation re: Mr. Wain. I'm afraid the movie did much to bring about that effect, seeing that much of it was "fabricated". Keep in mind that "not much is really known about Louis Wain's life", as has often been said. Modern day psychiatrists and psychologists, looking back on his life, do seem to agree generally that he likely suffered from schizoprenia, a genetic-based disorder. Hence, why at least one of his siblings also ended up being institutionalized for similar reasons. And, although it is true that the "schizo-kitty" series is "undated", the fact he produced a SINGLE "normal" drawing of a cat near his end (not "several", as claimed in this video) is not proof that he did not suffer from mental illness. Mental patients often have moments of "lucidity" in the course of their disease(s). It is likely during one such period that he sketched his final "happy cat" drawing, IMHO.
It’s not my intention to spread misinformation and history is sometimes anecdotal at best and not all 100% confirmed fact because there is no way it can be. I never claim to be an expert in any of the stories I tell, I’m not a certified historian, just a hobbyist and I do my best to present the most commonly presented version of the story which is in the public domain using historical and both modern day sources. I’m just trying my best 🤷♀️ I look forward to your expert video on the topic 😊 as the only way to counter “misinformation” is to put the version out there you believe to be right. FYI, this video was released before the movie came out and I still haven’t seen it. Have a good day!

Ooh yeah I have a few in my hall don’t I 😂 thank you for the comment 💗💗💗
Fabulous insight into Louis Wain - thank you! I've just seen the film and it's nice he is receiving the acclaim he deserved.

The Neofolk group Current 93 introduced me to Wain’s works, and I’m so glad they did
Fantastic episode! As a cat lover myself, it was great to hear his story and learn more about the cartoony cats!
Thanks for watching Kim! Glad you enjoyed 💗💗💗
David Tibet from current 93 was a big fan of wain’s work and used it for art on some of his albums !!!
ooh, I've never heard of them, I'll take a look, thanks for watching :)
This is my second episode to hear and I am here to stay.
Welcome to the ghoul gang! Love the username!!!!

Yes, i'm not sure when it was discovered...
I read number of articles that claimed he was schizophrenic. But thanks for clarifying.

Thanks Helena 🖤👻🖤
Just my 2 cents: the description of Louis in his 50s and later sounds a lot like early onset dementia.

These people are not insane but just different from being isolated from everyone, they all just misdiagnose eccentricity as being mentally ill.
