Opium production in Myanmar surges to nine-year high - BBC News

  • The production of opium increased sharply in Myanmar, rising by a third last year, according to the United Nations.
It touched nearly 795 metric tonnes in 2022, nearly double the production in 2021 - 423 metric tonnes - the year of the military coup.
The UN believes this is driven by economic hardship and insecurity, along with higher global prices for the opium resin that is used to make heroin.
The coup plunged much of Myanmar into a continuing civil war.

Like I said, Myanmar is an absolutely beautiful nation full of honest friendly and helpful people. Unfortunately, Myanmar people have been suffering way too long through no fault of their own.
For honest truth about Myanmar, pls read the insightful informative, multi-pages comments by "A. Grace" at,

Anglo Clans of USA, UK & Australia, etc are using next-door neighbor Thailand, which has a defense treaty with them, as a base camp since in the 1950s; from which attack against China/PRC was launched by sending Chinese Nationalist/Taiwanese Kuomintang forces into nearby Burma's eastern border closed to China in the '50s and '60s.
In the '60s and '70s, using Thailand as a base camp, attack against nearby Laos & Cambodia were launched during the Indochina war where several million innocent civilians were killed.
Like Anglo British introduced opium to China a century earlier, USA-led Anglo clans introduced opium/opium growing as a form of self-support to those Chinese Nationalist (Taiwanese Kuomintang) forces in Shan State of Burma in the '50s and '60s.
So that's how Burma became an opium producer.
'Anglo caused most of the world's problems.' - David Cameron, former British Prime Minister

In my humble opinion, Burma/Myanmar would have been much better off without Colonialism.
For instance, there's hardly any Muslim, Hindu or Christian in Myanmar up until Anglo British Colonialism.
I suppose it's fair to say that many of these tragedies of Myanmar facing today, such as racial ethnic and religious conflicts, started with Colonialism.
Do you know Burma used to be a major oil producer for British Empire up until the Middle-East oil boom in 1930? Burmah Oil Company was one of a handful of oil giants in those days.
"Anglo caused most of the world's problems" - David Cameron, former British Prime Minister
Let me rephrase it, if I may; "Anglo caused most of the world's problems, including a heck of a hell lot in Burma/Myanmar".
      - first under the long and painful Anglo British Colonial era;
      - secondly, boycotted and blacklisted by Anglo West, as an impoverished nation turned to Socialism for relief after Colonialism.
Myanmar has a sad saying that goes "A poor young girl got raped and got hurt twice", referring to their nation's double tragedies. 😔

Speaking of ethnic and religious tragedies Burma/Myanmar facing today, the fact that the world's longest Civil War which is in Myanmar, mainly between Buddhist Burmese and Christian Karen (while Buddhist Karen are largely at peace) was made it possible, prolonged and supported by Anglo Clans of USA, UK & Australia, etc while they are using next-door neighbor Thailand (which has a defense treaty with them) as a base camp since in the 1950.
In my humble opinion, ethnic Karen refugees fleeing the conflict/war in Myanmar are entitled to cross over to Thailand to stay, as well as eligibility to relocate to new places such as USA, Australia.
Like I said, the fact that the world's longest Civil War which is in Myanmar, mainly between Buddhist Burmese and Christian Karen (while Buddhist Karen are largely at peace) was made it possible, prolonged and supported by Anglo Clans of USA, UK & Australia, etc while they are using next-door neighbor Thailand (which has a defense treaty with them) as a base camp since in the 1950. True, ethnic Karen refugees fleeing the conflict/war in Myanmar are entitled to cross over to Thailand to stay, as well as eligibility to relocate to new places such as USA, Australia.

Colonialism & Colonization are evil things done and benefited by evildoers.
      - For instance, here in Singapore, a tiny island with 6 million souls lives like sardines in a can, where else in nearby vast bountiful Australia which is ten thousand times 10,000 bigger with a mere 27 million inhabitants.
      - A similar situation in tiny and packed Japan, which is running out of space and land. Do you know that their living room and bedroom are the same place, and that most Japanese people sleep in their living room. 😔
      - Here's the one solution. Why don't Burma's Muslim, Hindu & Christian population, if they wish, move to place like Anglo Colonized vast bountiful Australia/New Zealand in Asia-Pacific region?
After all, these are Asia-Pacific lands looted from Native Asians-Pacific people. 😔

Yes the Junta that runs Myanmar are deplorable, but the west has bled the country dry of its wealth for centuries, including America's own Herbert Hoover. Now it is impoverished, and should be able to sell its produce on the open market. Banning them from the pharma market will just encourage the black market.

When graphed on a supply/demand curve, addiction, even for materiels as common as cigarettes, has nearly infinite inelasticity. As prices increase for cigarettes, people will continue to buy at the same rate. This is even less flexible for Heroine and opiates.
Basic economics shows that its less of a choice, and more of an exploitation on the part of sellers.
