Michael Gerard Tyson (born June 30, 1966) is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1985 to 2005. Nicknamed "Iron Mike" and "Kid Dynamite" in his early career, and later known as "The Baddest Man on the Planet", Tyson is considered to be one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time. He reigned as the undisputed world heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990.
Constantine "Cus" D'Amato (January 17, 1908 - November 4, 1985) was an Italian-American boxing manager and trainer who handled the careers of Mike Tyson, Floyd Patterson, and José Torres, all of whom went on to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Several successful boxing trainers, including Teddy Atlas and Kevin Rooney, were tutored by D'Amato. He was a proponent of the peek-a-boo style of boxing, in which the fighter holds his gloves close to his cheeks and pulls his arms tight against his torso, which was criticized by some because it was believed that an efficient attack could not be launched from it.

I think Mike was 17 here. It's pretty amazing really. Mike seems so self-aware and open, which is a sign of maturity. When I was 17 I was as dumb as a rock. It's strange to me how I perceived Mike when I was younger (i.e., the media portrayed him as barbaric and emotionally unstable, etc). In reality, Mike is very intelligent, just from a bad neighborhood -- probably far more intelligent and self-aware than I was at the same age

I was thinking the same thing. When I was 17 I wasn’t as mature as he sounded

Well said. Great mentor great mentee. Behind every great student is a great teacher(s). It's also true that behind every great teacher is a great student. Great potential meeting great motivator(s). I think more than Mike's intellect and wisdom at such a young age was his natural drive to take action when given great teaching and motivation he made the most of the opportunity granted to him. That's the most important piece the C student with great drive and potential beats the A+ student with neither. He was born to be a champion. He was found to be a champion. He took action to be one of the 5 greatest champions of all time. Cus was Mike's angel and did his duty to lift a fellow human to their potential. Mike took the hand that God brought into his life and brought it to places he and Cus both believed was possible but it was the will the determination the tenacity the good advisors (along with the bad) that took a kid named Mike Tyson and made him Iron Mike...and it was Mike who remembered this light in his life along with devotion to his mental health that made the special human he is today. A family man. A business owner. A former world champion. But by far and away...and given all of the questioning in this interview about it... he proved from all the trauma and all negative experiences a human given the right environment and opportunity in their developmental years even after facing all of the trauma he faced is very very much worth the investment that it took to get him there. Now is Mike's daughter is a tennis player. He made his mom proud. Cus proud. Boxing proud. Humanity proud. And is an inspiration to everyone walking planet Earth. He doesn't always say the right things and has made some bad choices but the collective person is the definition of inspiration for anyone who thinks they can't... if Mike could overcome all that came against him at such a young age... with a little bit of love and direction many others can too. One of my favorite humans and journeys in my lifetime. I'm thankful to be alive in an age and a world with Mike Tyson in it. And there are many many more humans for all the Cus's of the world to discover so they can achieve great purpose and human example no matter where they start from in this life.
