Cus lived with Tyson's manager, Jim Jacobs, in a discreet apartment for years. Both were bachelors the entire time. Both men attracted rumours of being gay (Jim) or bisexual (Cus) for years. Cus and Jacobs both died of pneumonia, a common symptom of terminal AIDS patients. Cus drew attention for his actions around Floyd Patterson, the shy, lisping, intelligent, soft spoken kid he coached to winning the Heavyweight belt, including:
• Spending his share of the winnings from the title fight ($35K) on a jewel-encrusted golden crown for Patterson (WTF?!)
• Sleeping on a cot near Floyd's, in front of the door to his room, ostensibly due to concerns (paranoia?) about Floyd being poisoned.
• Apparently being witnessed sleeping in the same bed as Floyd, which seems to be corroborated by Floyd himself, who commented on an incident where Cus seemingly rubbed his feet with his own (possibly in his sleep).
• Also, it's worth pointing out that Floyd once made a bit of a weird comment about Cus: _"He makes mistakes, but the more they try to turn me against him, the more his quality comes out. _*_Lucky he isn't a woman. I might have married him."_*
Cus spent sev. years in a "civil union' with a woman; they never married, and never slept in the same bed, or even the same room, apparently due to Cus's thunderous snoring, caused by a post-nasal drip. I guess his snoring hadn't begun or become so heinous in the 50s?
Tyson says he thought Cus was a ph*ggot when he first met him, due to him being an old white guy who took such a shine to him (a 12 or 13YO black kid in juvie), seemingly for no reason.
