In this clip, Teddy Atlas discussed rumors about Cus D'Amato's personal life. Teddy dismissed speculation about D'Amato's sexuality, noting: "He was a man's man" and saying he had no knowledge of any truth to rumors that he was gay. One thing I can take away from Cus’s legacy is that both Teddy and Mike loved him unconditionally. They may not have been related by blood but they were FAMILY💯

If Mike would have stayed 100% disciplined and dedicated to the art of boxing, he could have possibly retired undefeated. Instead, Teddy went all street on Mike like if Mike was a full grown man. I can understand if Teddy didn't already know Mike and found out what happened. But Teddy knew and jumped the gun. So he to was in the wrong for NOT acting like an adult. He was wrong for not having control of his emotions. He was wrong for NOT going to Cus first. Cus if Teddy would of went to Cus first, Cus wouldn't have been forced to choose between Mike who he took in as his own kid and Teddy who Cus also took in but was already an adult. Teddy wanted Cus to get rid of Tyson after Cus already took him under his wing. Want kind of father, guardian and or man would that make Cus if he just gave up on Mike like that?? It would of made Cus a piece of shit to do something like that.

I never got the 'rumors' thing with absolutely anyone that isn't bothered about marriage/kids. Some people are just fine on their own. They don't need their backside wiping all the time like seemingly 'real men' do. Nobody seems to mention how insecure people are jumping in and out of relationships because they don't love themselves so they have to put pressure on others to do it for them.

Teddy is admitting that Tyson is the greatest HW talent there has ever been but what he’s also saying is that what ended up happening to him was always there ready to be unravelled. Mike needed Cus to impress, he needed Teddy to tell him straight, he needed someone he respected the opinion of in order to continue to excel. He didn’t respect Rooney enough because Rooney tried to get too involved and was a little forceful with it so Mike severed that relationship. Had he not have groped Teddy’s niece, Teddy would’ve kept Mike together. That Mike Tyson, had things been different would’ve been undefeated and The greatest prizefighter ever but at 20 and with a rapidly dissolving support network, he fell apart. He made bad decisions, had a bad social attitude and yes men and women everywhere trying to get a piece of him. He couldn’t control his ego and it fell spectacularly apart. Mike was just a kid when all of this was happening. He didn’t have the mental and emotional tools to handle fame. Tysons fame was as big as any fame gets, like Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Elvis, its way too powerful and you expect a 20 year old kid from Brooklyn whos father was a pimp and mother a prostitute to handle that?
My thoughts are that if Teddy had’ve been with Mike for longer, the story would’ve been different. It wasn’t so it isn’t but if you look at any great champion, Ali, Holyfield, Lennox, Big George, the common thread is that they had great supportive and honest people around them, mentors that kept them on track. Once givens Roper and King got him, he was flesh in piranha infested waters, he didn’t stand a chance. The homies got him, the leeches got him, every piece of garbage imaginable got to him.
