He needed more time and more fights to get back in shape. It’s a miracle he ever cans back at all after three and a half year layoff. But he was one of a kind.
In their first fight, Joe had Ali against the ropes just like the Mexican champion ...but Ali was was a tough guy and recovered quickly when he got hurt. Plus he underestimated Joe and paid the price
Yes, he did underestimate joe by playing with him too much, waving to the crowd, and not being aggressive. The 15th round knockdown really won it for Joe.
Ali had a relationship with D'Amato that went all the way back to when he was a youth who traveled to Catskill to watch Floyd Patterson spar. D'Amato acted as a consultant to Ali throughout his career and was originally earmarked to train Ali when he turned pro. Cus was the first to spot this wasn't the same Ali who fought Zora Folley in 1967. The foot speed had diminished noticeably and Ali was getting caught much more than ever before. But one thing the man never lacked was sheer toughness. He realised he could take a beating and keep coming. Ali's analysis in the beginning was actually spot on. If he were as fast as he used to be, Joe would have had a lot of trouble keeping up with him and timing that magnificent left hook. Only he didn't realise he couldn't keep that up for long anymore. Hi, love you uploads. From the now gone Las Vegas boxing hall of fame channel on RUclips run by the now late Steve Lott using Jim Jacobs and Bill Cayton’s footage from their vaults, a few years ago there were two 1 hour uploads of all the footage recorded of Ali and Cus debating over how Ali would get on with past greats for this documentary. I have also seen footage from the same time of Ali asking Cus what he thought of Sugar Ray Robinson. I can’t seem to find it now, do you have it? Cus gave an excellent explanation as to why he doesn’t class Robinson as pound for pound the best boxer ever, and it’s because he wasn’t really a boxer as he got hit often and was offensive minded. He was determined and a fighter but not a boxer. Do you know where this footage was included? Thanks very much.
Unfortunaly we dont have it ...thank u for nice comments...stay tuned...we have problem with monetization ,big reason why we stop with uploads...hope in near future that we'll be up with old new content..
The footage with Cus is gold. Joe Frazier was born to win the Fight of the Century against the Fighter of the Century, and not much more. Ali needed Joe as he needed Norton to develop into a fighter who could defeat a new breed of heavyweight athlete, like George Foreman and Lyle. Frankly Ali's story is too big to tell because of his effect on us as individuals during that time, and since.
Ali would win the early rounds but by the middle Cus would be warmed up and by round 15 would eventually completely dismantle and brutally knock out Ali in glorious fashion
It would have been interesting to have seen how Ali would have turned out if he would have been with Cus D'Amato instead of Angelo Dundee. Angelo gave Ali a LOT of leeway that he would never have gotten from Cus. Ali even says that HE ran the show, not Angelo. That would not have happened with Cus.
I saw this and even had a fight VHS I made out of this and other fight video clips. The mutual sparring should have predicted a tough night. Like Cus said, he was an old man and--if he could do it--so could Joe... I don't think you beat the prime Joe with speed and athleticism, but you needed wisdom and toughness or power to jump on him early to do it. That's why AIi won the last 2. It wasn't his speed and athleticism. Frazier had so much determination and energy! I do feel that AIi really won a close decision or it was a draw as far as what happened*, but you do have to factor in holding. I think NY penalized the fighter for excessive holding, so Joe may have won all of or drew in the close or semi-close rounds... *But, there was no 2 point rounds.
That right hook that landed on joe fraizer should have knocked him out. Idk how the older heavyweights took such a beating. No wonder their brains were so damaged. Ali lasted longer than most fighters because ali knew how to stall the clock. He also did moves that are illegal today like holding behind the head. Constant holding and backhand jab. On another note they did let ali get rabid punched on the back of his head constantly. I guess they just didn’t care back then.
The gap between rounds one and two was exactly one minute. The gap between rounds two and three was, again, exactly one minute. Same again for rounds three and four. But the gap between rounds four and five - the moment of the torn glove incident - was, precisely, one minute and six seconds. In other words, only six seconds more than all the other intervals. But as it was, a myth was born that Dundee had bought Ali minutes of extra time to recover. - BBC
Cus must've valued himself real high, he wouldn't agree to take any money ali's willing to pay a week if he was his trainer lol i wondered what type of money cus would accept..

OOOOOOOH, i didn’t know he had to cut 30 fucking pounds in that short time span!!!! Being a former fighter, studying cutting weight, etc., that takes a HUGE toll on your body!!!!
Wish I could do something like that today.
@@yusufrahman6341 You can.
@@bryonwatkins1432 Thanks for the encouragement I'm trying.
@@yusufrahman6341 If you get into a boxing 🥊 workout routine, that includes, four times a week, jogging 3-4 miles. That will drop off within 8-12 weeks.
@@bryonwatkins1432 Thinks for the advice boxing is out of the question for me, however, some lite jogging might do the trick.
Ali degrading of Fraser showed he had no respect for him. He learnt quite quickly after the first body blow he felt in the clinches.
At the end of the day you clowns hating on Muhammad ,Cus said Ali was and believed he was the greatest heavyweight of all time and he certainly wasn't wrong about that
Yea, but cus also said Marciano would've knocked Ali out 😉
@@John-pc2yr fantasy, and Zora Folley said he wouldn't have got past the jab ,true, and Manny Steward said Ali would have been too big and too fast ,and that's from a guy with a poster of RM prominently displayed in his gym .. Marciano from Liston on would have been another strong contender ie quarry ,Chuvalo ,Lyle etc
@@John-pc2yre also said Joe Louis would ko
him , and he was right about that
Down maybe I'm not so sure about out.
Anyone who knew amato was witnessed a real man and leader
Thats Jim Jacobs who is Mike Tysons future manager, doing the interview with Angelo Dundee.
It was pretty clear in the first fight that if Ali had a couple of more tune-up fights he would have won the fight. Yes he had a couple of fights right before the first Frazier fight but Ali had been off for three and a half years and needed more time to get back into his pre-exile condition
That was Ali mistake, his arrogance & pride combined together forced him to fight Frazier way too early then he should. People need to remember that when your conditioning is down, it takes time, hard work & consistency to get back there. When you have been out of the ring for 3 & 1/2 years show some humility, your not going to be same fighter. Ali thought he could still beat Frazier even when he was forced out, what a mistake. He had to learn the hard way.
Ali wouldn’t won that fight if he had 10 more fights
@@jayedwards4787 I definitely disagree, Ali at his best beats Frazier all day long every fight. Ali beat Joe Frazier two out of three fights and could have won the first one if he didn't clown around for 2 or 3 rounds.
@@youtoo2233 what an absurd claim…Frazier pummeled Ali in the first fight … just took him
on straight up and beat his butt for 15 rounds…one judge had it 11-4… you weren’t around in 71 were you ?..
@@jayedwards4787 Don’t argue with Ali lovers, body punches always earn more points than a jab. Ali may have jabbed all night but when you deliver a body blow it’s equivalent of 10 jabs.
Ali was able to say anything except the word conservative. At several places in this video, Ali attempts to say the word conservative, which came out as 'con-ser-gative' lol!
True 😂😂
This the best stuff
I hope this gets an answer.
Unfortunaly we dont have it ...thank u for nice comments...stay tuned...we have problem with monetization ,big reason why we stop with uploads...hope in near future that we'll be up with old new content..
great post
The footage with Cus is gold. Joe Frazier was born to win the Fight of the Century against the Fighter of the Century, and not much more. Ali needed Joe as he needed Norton to develop into a fighter who could defeat a new breed of heavyweight athlete, like George Foreman and Lyle. Frankly Ali's story is too big to tell because of his effect on us as individuals during that time, and since.
Ali would win the early rounds but by the middle Cus would be warmed up and by round 15 would eventually completely dismantle and brutally knock out Ali in glorious fashion
Ali was weak in the loins...he wanted to send ol girl away with more than an autograph 😂
Put an Ali mask on anybody and I think Frazier's chances of winning goes up. Love Smokin Joe
19:20 If I had a lower IQ …. 😂
Cus said Ali will lose due to inactivity. Cus listen to Ali about Frazier style of boxing so he made Tyson 💙
que genio Bonavena!!
Ali should've listened to Cus
Seeing the evil government stole 3 years of his prime, cus had nothing but an opinion. Ali in his absolute prime would have destroyed Frazier.
Frazier had the greatest victory of all time by anybody
Two capricorns, born on the same day. Frazier was also a capricorn. What a fest.
Cus was low down promoting Ali. You can't do it kid. Making Ali want it more
cus d'amato was the real life micky
im a old man ! nahhhh im talking about joe frazier here XD
Dundee is lying that Ali got 4-5 mins in between round 4 and 5 against Cooper. I've seen the full footage and it was literally seconds.
Fine doku, well done.
Thank you...this two fighters = boxing epic
Was that Cutis Mayfield Ali was sparring with?
- BBC
Well, Dundee said otherwise! Regardless of how much we love and respect Ali history must be retold as it happened.
When I watched this fight I saw exactly what you saw. It was not a 3-4 minute delay by any means.
❤
Cus D`Ámato was totally right and Ali wrong.
Ali I have the same belt of John L Sullivan. Damn
Ali my man, you should have listened to Cus and not be that cocky in your first fight with Smokin Joe.
Cus must've valued himself real high, he wouldn't agree to take any money ali's willing to pay a week if he was his trainer lol i wondered what type of money cus would accept..
A percentage as he said I am not an employee I'm a partner.
@@megsmith596 meg would you work for me?
