Thanks for the tip on hip rotation. Was doing good pop ups at home, but out on my surf board I was always dragging my back foot up with the front foot. Today after my surf - I thought about it and figured I was not rotating my hips. Your tips on hip rotation, kept my back foot where it needs to be, and with my head up and looking to the side - well... that help facilitate the hip rotation. I have looked at many surf videos and you are the first to emphasize hip rotation. With the right technical info, things become so much easier - Thanks again. PS: I also liked your instructions on paddling. Cheers

I heard you mention hip rotation earlier and focused on that in practicing - that and looking down the wave. What a huge difference! I found it even makes it easier to feel when you're in the wave earlier on the gentle waves we usually surf. Thank you for all your great help!

Will do! I plan to keep at it as long as I can. Trying to make up for the years I didn't surf.... Started in '62 (no surf schools then) but quit for 30 years. Your teaching has helped more than I can explain. I always share the latest with my daughter & her boyfriend who is just getting started. Approaching 70 and surfing & skateboarding has made a big difference health wise. Thanks again!

Jim , thats just so great to hear ..making these vids , especially for the younger set ( i'm 60 ) in the new format of around 3 - 4 mins is tough and flipping expensive .. but the meat and potatoes is in the longer vids , done on a shoe string . But comments like you just made make it all worthwhile .. also more than I can explain.. hope one day we get a chance to paddle out together.

Super helpful! This has been a sticking point for me and only through focused practice and repetition have I started to make some progress. Your recent videos have been solid. Upping the planning and production have made a big difference.

Thats good to know and you've got it there thats the 3 core elements to improvement "focus practice and repetition" Surfing is the kind of sport that demands this approach .. well done

Thanks, this is so useful and seems to get at the heart of my issues. I have been struggling in my first year and a half of surfing with not rotating enough and feeling like my front foot gets stuck getting forward and rotating enough in my popup. Looking at my GoPro video I see I am often having to adjust my front foot after popping up as my stance is too narrow. So after standing up, I'm doing a second step of my front foot to move it forward and centered on the stringer of the board which doesnt work well on steeper waves and means I lose control and balance a bit on the first part of the wave before I get properly positioned! Once Im properly positioned I feel quite comfortable but this popup positioning seems to be holding me back. Will be incorporating this in my practice. Your videos and teaching style are really top drawer, will certainly be looking up your Surf School if in Sri Lanka if I find myself there at some point.

Thanks for that and repeat the jump up as much as possible to build up the muscle memory and also making a line at 45 degrees to the nose of the board in the direction you want to rotate can really help .. dont look at the line but just think your hip want to twist that way .. and do make sure there is no rail holding going on.. hope we see you at one of our schools one day for sure.

Hello from Cape Cod, MAssachussetts. I have been practing rotation and especially "driving hard" with the hands on a floor. It feels right. Now I just have to try it on a wave., once I repair my wetsuit.
