    Lol. This is actually one of the most coherent and useful tutorials on this topic. I have been surfing for nearly 50 years constantly and for the last 20 of those have really struggled at nailing it. I was a pretty useful surfer back in the day on the twin fins. I have always been of the hold the rails and pop both feet at the same time...Now all that does is brings both feet about a foot apart in the middle of the board. So have taken fins out of one of my boards and to wifes horror brought it inside to relearn how a 63 year old should do it. ha. Still ride short boards and realise if I want to keep enjoying my surfs more I will need to relearn! Fine when I'm up and on the rare occasion when feet land correctly. Cheers. Good stuff!

    There is so much visualisation in this video where the backfoot stands on its toes, and its even said 'this is fine' but I've noticed as a teacher that its rarely fine, it forces the knee down onto your board and often limits beginners getting up at all, and often makes them stand with both or atleast one foot facing forward

    Have been surfing for more than 50 years; in recent years I’ve had long breaks due to health. Your body doesn’t spring back as quickly when you’re young. I’ve had to work on the ‘pop up’. This vid is good, but I suggest building up the muscles and core before attempting the quick PU - it’s tricky on land and like me you could hurt your back. Putting the back foot down 1st if definitely the way to go bc you need to control where that front foot lands. Trying to land both in single motion is too hard unless the wave is very clean etc. Also build up to the standard PU from the chicken wing until you get good / strong / consistent..

    • @hammster8255
      @hammster8255 2 года назад +2

      Excellent video & comment Steve. Similar vintage to yourself. The standard pop up is hard on the old knees so chicken wing gets me up on the board. Alternative but not ideal on faster breaking waves is to leave back knee bent & swing front leg through then stand up so in barrel position. The younger more agile folk should be able to get to a standard pop up with practice.

    • @stevenbrennan9262
      @stevenbrennan9262 2 года назад

      @@hammster8255 I keep working on it even though I’ve found a pop that works for me. I have to watch my back. It’s basically a chicken-leg; back foot to right position as I push up with both arms next to arm pits, as I’m pushing to full extent I pull my front foot thru to pretty much where it should be. This movement works really good for me on any board. Very fast and less strain on the back.

    • @hammster8255
      @hammster8255 2 года назад

      @@stevenbrennan9262 Yes just find a way. I think we are talking the same method. The standard pop up is no good for my dodgy knee or back so what you & I use is quick and effective. In the correct position is what counts.
      It works at Bells which admittedly are fat heavy waves so we stick with it. We keep surfing until we can’t 👍

    • @joelsavell
      @joelsavell Год назад

      My biggest issue is hips aren’t flexible enough to get my front foot up far enough to get a good center of gravity while my hands are still on the board. I’m working on it, but yeah, these things get more difficult and require much more maintenance as we get older.

    • @markwilliams8533
      @markwilliams8533 11 месяцев назад

      I have the same issues as you’ve all mentioned. I totally agree about building the core for strength and stretching exercises as well just for general health, it will automatically improve your ability to pop up as your strength and flexibility improve. I’ve struggled for years with my health and have become unfit, surfing, core building and stretching has started to improve my overall health and happiness. Brilliant video. 👍

    Is this also what you teach to absolute beginners? I learnt to do this technique many years ago and eventually became a surf coach, I'm now coaching with a school which teaches front foot first and using the back knee to create space to bring the front foot up, then twisting into position. I've been reprimanded for teaching back foot first and causing confusion etc.

    Great pop-up video, but one tiny pet peeve: The major muscles of the chest are called pectorals (pek-TOR-als; layman's term) or petoralis (pek-tor-AL-is; Latin term), the latter of which is very commonly misconstrued as pek-TOR-ee-AL-is. Otherwise, the best graphic representation of pop-up mechanics I've come across. Great work.

    I use a 9’ long board so my toes are on the back of the board. I don’t have much core strength at 62 so I do push up with my toes in contact with the board. Any problem with this? I still can do as you demonstrate and bring my back foot first immediately followed by my front foot.

    I'm having a lot of trouble with my back foot landing too far forward when I switch to my longer step up. Any advice on how to pop up consistently when switching board lengths?

    • @barefoot_surf
      @barefoot_surf  2 месяца назад

      Hey, great question. This is really normal when swapping board sizes. Are you currently doing the standard pop up? How big is your longer set up? Slowing down your pop up and even re-introducing the chicken wing technique is a great idea. The chicken wing technique ensures your back foot always lands in the same spot. This technique offers a slower approach to getting to your feet, however reinforces and trains your brain to plant the back foot in the same spot every time. I would recommend re-visiting this technique to get your foot placement right every time, regardless of the size board you’re on. Check the link below to see how.

    I can do this move easily in land and will incorporate it in the water for my next surf next week. My only concern is that while practicing I can feel my knees a tiny bit sore from the pushing in order to jump and bring them both in. Is this normal? Or am I doing something wrong?

    • @barefoot_surf
      @barefoot_surf  6 месяцев назад

      Yes, your knees will touch especially if you are practicing on land as you are on solid ground and not a submerged surfboard. *Make sure to swing your knees up and forward by using only your hands and knees as spots of contact with the floor or surfboard. You can purposely lift your feet from the ground before taking off, to prevent you from using your toes.

    This doesn’t apply to the beginner push up video when you push up when you do a plank then bring your back foot forward first and keep the hands on the board (right)?? This video seems a little different..please explain!! Thank you for all the informational videos

    • @barefoot_surf
      @barefoot_surf  3 месяца назад +1

      Hey there. This video is demonstrating the “standard pop up”, a different pop up technique to the “push up” technique you are referring to. The push up technique is a slower pop up, more suited towards beginner through to intermediate surfers that ride slightly bigger boards. The standard pop up is still the same principles (back foot, then front foot), however it’s a much faster process, therefore it looks very different!

    • @barefoot_surf
      @barefoot_surf  2 года назад

      Hey Miguel,
      The standard pop- up isn't a "one size fits all" technique. There are many people that have various physical limitations and have to use one of our other variations to get up to their feet (which is totally fine, too). One thing you may benefit from is watching our full, free online course on the "Take Off', and look specifically under the "Common Mistakes" Section. Perhaps you are dragging your knees due to looking down or not twisting your hips.
