He served time in prison for his involvement in a robbery...heard Johnny Cash who did a concert at the prison and that got him interested in pursuing music. Years later the California gov Ronald Reagan pardoned him. He wrote many songs which is why he was called the poet of the common man.
Yep, Merle Haggard was in the audience as a prisoner in San Quentin when Johnny Cash did his famous concert there. He wound up in San Quentin because he kept escaping from every other prison that they put him in.
Ruby Texas Wow! I did not know that. That album from San Quintin was one of my dad’s favorite albums of Johnny Cash. We used to listen to it together all the time.
Merle Haggard is one of the greatest storytellers of country music of all time. He's know as the Poet of the Common Man. Seen him live and put on one of the best concerts . He will be missed .
Merle was one of the prisoners watching Johnny Cash perform live at San Quentin State prison. Johnny also performed at Folsom prison. In 1960, the governor of California, Ronald Reagan, partoned his sentence and released Mettle from prison.
Anytime I hear ANY of Merle's songs, I can't help but miss my beloved late dad so much. His heart and soul was Country music all the way since he was a kid. Late dad was a career naval man who serve over seas during the vietnam war. He was an attache' to the US Embassy in Thailand, and that's how he met our mom. He adopted all us 6 little Thai kids. He retired in fall of 78. Sadly he passed away in May of 86 after turning 49 a month before. I miss him so much...Thanks for doing a Merle's song. It brings back so much fond memories of years past.. Much appreciated..
OMG thank you for reacting to this song and thanks for the shout out! I wish we could have heard what you said before the video, but there was no sound.
No sound for the first 58 seconds of the video. Really hope you can do Nelly & Tim McGraw's song "Over & Over". A rapper & country singer singing a song together. God bless & hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas season.
shirley carr others who have reacted to that song, got their videos blocked for copyright issues. Rediculous because you figure it would let people hear the song that's never heard it before & could actually boost sales of the older songs. Great song. That's my stepfathers song to my mom. He passed away 25 years ago & to this day I cru when I hear that song.
My grandparents moved out to California (Bakersfield I think) for work when my mother was in her late teens, she had a car and she drove around these two broke guys who lived in a shack down the road. The two guys names? Merle Haggard & Buck Owens.. Oh btw ...Mom was the Jitterbug Champion of (Caliveris ?) County at that time.. this reminded me of those stories from her life.. Thanks for that
Great song. Great singer. Great message. Please let us know how your "kids" react to this. Hey! Maybe you could do a reaction video of THEM reacting! 😀
Merl Haggard wrote that song about a guy he served time with. Another great song about someone he served time with is "Sing me back home" That one might floor you.
Merle is still my favorite singer of any genre and this is one my favorites of his. You mentioned that George Strait was the voice of country, to me Merle is that voice, but others will say George Jones or Conway. Thanks for reacting to Merle
Love Merle Haggard! Many happy memories of listening to Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, The Eagles and many more on road trips with my dad and sisters! Dad told me as a child that a well rounded person enjoys music, books, Movies, etc of all genres! I took it to heart! You should listen to Silver Wings with Jewel! It’s a duet with Merle Haggard and Jewell that he did live on an anniversary celebration for him! She did a couple other songs with him too but Silver Wings is one of my favorites! He had recorded it alone previously! He has so many awesome songs!
This song brings back fun times with my best friend, as she sang along with Merle on the radio, while driving through the Rocky Mountains. She is no longer with us, but whenever I hear certain country songs, it always brings a great memory of heading up a mountain trail in her bright red Jeep. Rest In Peace little buddy.
My grandpa used to play with a singer in Glenwood AZ that goes by Marty Robins and he does allot of western story songs. One id I think youd like is El Paso. Like I said he did allot of them that were great stories and this song is like 5:16 seconds. I know you'd like The Masters Call The Cowboy in the Continental Suit The Ballad of the Alamo Billy the kid Just to name a few.
I could listen to Merle Haggard all day. So many great songs. You should try "The Fighting side of me"-"The Way I Am" or "My Favorite Memory " you cant go wrong with any Haggard song.
Hag’s songs were more poetry than written lyrics. If I Make It To December, Kern River, The Way I Am, Chill Factor, A Man From Another Time, plus thousands more. His vocals/guitar off the chart. Keith Richards’ gave an interview to RS. He related meeting Hag during a benefit. Both were on stage jamming when he noticed an “old man” keep up with him lick for lick. Richards couldn’t lose him. After the jam Haggard introduced himself and told Keith “friends call me Hag.” Lodie.
Met him when I was 22 waiting tables in a truck stop in 1989, so humble and kind. I think he was caught off guard when I didn't ask for his autograph which I never did any singer, actor that came through. I treated everyone the same no matter their status. Still treat everyone I meet today like that. Live by the Golden Rule!!
I used to sing with my dad in his band he played for 56 years with his brother till my uncle passed dad hasn’t played since live to hear silver wings or Today I Started Loving You Again thank you for everything you do Ty
Six more hours! Dang it, I'll be asleep by then. Guess I'll just have to wait till tomorrow. Good choice by the way, this man is truely a country legend.
Just an FYI. Merle was far and away the greatest in Country music. No one comes close. He had the smoothest voice and relayed a message as perfectly and with the strongest feelings and best harmony than anyone before or after him.
There’s is asong by a guy named Jamey Johnson called “the dollar” I’m a truck driver and heard this song for the first time about a year ago and it hit home with me.
Great song by him is California Cottonfields, about a family going to call to escape the Great Depression. Reminds me of my own grandparents, who lost their farm and were homeless at that time. Good message for kids who don't know how desperate those days were...
My fav by Merle is "If We Make It Through December". It really hits home because it always seemed like the auto factories in Detroit did their laying off announcements at Christmastime, just like GM with their plant closing announcement recently.
listen to Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash, the one where Johnny came to Folsom with his band singing. Merle Haggard was in prison and actually heard and saw him and it gave him inspiration. He made his mind up if he could get out he would never loose his freedom again. He was pardoned, I believe , by Reagan. I know it was a president. He became one of the greatest writers and singers of country music that has ever lived.
The Prison was San Quentin. Merle was in and out of Lock-ups mainly brought on by the Passing of his Dad when Merle was 9 Years old. Interesting Life Story on this Man. Check it out.
I grew up in Texas. I played harmonica, guitar, banjo, trumpet, and sang. The culture said you did country. Merle mirrored his music off the great ones. Jimmy Rodgers, Buck Owens, the Possum George Jones, etc. and I learned to play a lot of different styles. However, I loved Merle the best. Thank God President Regan pardoned him as Governor of California. Where would we be without our dear Merle?
Merle was one of the best country music singer-songwriter he wrote most of his song's and a lot of other people song's.I knew Merle personally and he was a great person.
I’m very happy you’ll use Hag’s song to help the youth. Hag lost his father at a young age which had a huge impact on his life...mostly his marriages. He had a fear of being left; what people most fear make that fear happen. And Merle lost 3 wives until the last one stuck. Lodie
My Daddy was a hard man. Except to his baby girl ...me😁😍🥰... he was in prison with Merle Haggard. San Quentin. Daddy loved his music. Because he knew he was the real deal. I grew up on Merle. And I'm grateful for it.
When you get right down to it, Hip-Hop and Country are musical styles that have similar roots, but which evolved in different directions because of their respective environments (urban vs rural). However, they remain fundamentally the same, in that they are the way that people who have been kicked in the teeth by poverty and society in general tell their stories.
He started his music career after serving time in Prison and seeing Johnny Cash perform at the prison h was in Johnny Helped him and was Great friends with him thick and thin until the end
Please do nose on the grindstone by Tyler Childers it’s an amazing song with a message I believe most people need to hear love your channel and can’t wait to see more videos

Yay thanks for doing this song :) if you end up wanting to do more songs about moms, Oakridge Boys Mama's Table is a gorgeous song that talks about memories you make with your parents. Also, Food on the table by Alabama For a song that's just sweet and fun, Mama, He's Crazy by The Judds or Mama's Never Seen Those Eyes by The Forester Sisters. Forgive me if you did do them, I have watched a LOT of your reactions and so far did not see either one. The back three of them are pre 1990, the oakridges' didn't make it all that big that I know of.
Merle Haggard was in prison. I don't know what his sentence was or what the crime was for which he was convicted. He met Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash at one of their prison shows, I think it was San Quentin. He credited Johnny as the reason he turned his life around. Merle had reached commercial success but was worried about his past times in prison. He sought advice from Johnny. Johnny told him to tell the truth to the people before tabloids grabbed the story. He said, people are very forgiving if they know you aren't lying to them and he was correct.
Merle really did turn 21 in prison for robbery and an escape attempt after that in san Quentin, later then-California governor Ronald Reagan granted Haggard a full and unconditional pardon for his past crimes.
Merle Haggard is the greatest singer songwriter that ever lived. His music is about his life. He is known as the poet of the common man. Listen to ramblin fever
He was in prison and met Johnny Cash when Johnny Cash was performing there. Johñny Cash like his singing and when meryl got out of prison Johnny helped Meryl launch his career
This song was big fun. When I was a kid I remember it well and he's got another real good one, Kentucky Gambler Kentucky Gambler is as is a masterpiece of a song The Words the meanings the lyrics
Maybe try Willie Nelson's touching tribute to Merle: 'He Won't Ever Be Gone.' Or an upbeat song that was one of Merle and Willie's last duets: 'It's All Going To Pot.'
I'm still here, alive but not quite living...existing. thank you for asking, I really do appreciate it. I hope all is well with you and your lovely family, did you get to enjoy the holidays with them? Your channel has really grown and rightfully so with all the effort you put into it,I'm excited for you but hope it's not making you too busy to really enjoy yourself and what you've created
I think you miss the point of this song. It is about how he takes responsibility for what he has done. He isn't blaming anybody but himself. He just realizes it too late.
I would love your reaction to his song Mama's Hungry Eyes. It's a song he wrote that really happened. He grew up in a train car made into a house that sat on a railroad track. Most of Merle's song were written by him and it was about his life.
I saw him perform live 25 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday! Just don't ask me what I did yesterday... because I can't remember. Ha Ha
My son was troubled but I loved him with all my heart and this was our song and I played it at his funeral as my AJ forever 19 was murdered in April in front of me.
Just saw this song in the recommended been out awhile and it's pretty funny. Had to watch it again. Think you will like it. "It's hard to kiss the lips at night..." by The Notorious Cherry Bombs. Yes it is a legit song and group. It's an ensemble of a few really good county singers/musicians.
He served time in prison for his involvement in a robbery...heard Johnny Cash who did a concert at the prison and that got him interested in pursuing music. Years later the California gov Ronald Reagan pardoned him. He wrote many songs which is why he was called the poet of the common man.

Wearing my " Mama Tried" shirt now! Love Merle Haggard. True outlaw Country❤
YOU PLAYED THE HAG! MY HUSBAND WAS IN THE KITCHEN WHEN I TURNED THIS ON AND HE SANG ALONG, EVERY WORD. HE LOVES MERLE. RIP MERLE.
Merle was one of the prisoners watching Johnny Cash perform live at San Quentin State prison. Johnny also performed at Folsom prison. In 1960, the governor of California, Ronald Reagan, partoned his sentence and released Mettle from prison.
I think you'd really like "Pancho and Lefty" by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.
Priceless song! I just heard for the first time a few days ago. My respects to guys.
Townes Van Zandt originally sang it. A lot of people don't know that. TVZ was a very good artist and storyteller.
Pancho and Lefty is great by anyone. Steve Earle is my personal favorite version but Van Zandt's version is excellent too
Was Willie's song, but Merle's one verse made the song what it is.
My husband is sitting here singing all the words 😆😆 I've never heard this song.
Sounds like you have a man of high culture!
Grew up with this song. Love it, brought back some good memories.
Anytime I hear ANY of Merle's songs, I can't help but miss my beloved late dad so much. His heart and soul was Country music all the way since he was a kid. Merle and George jones are the voices of country music for sure!

He was in the audience as an inmate when Johnny Cash played at Folsom Prison. Inspired, " he cleaned up good."
My Mama tried to get me to stop playing over and over. I was a little kid back then. Still one of my favorites.
If you liked that, you'll love "Mama" by BJ Thomas... it's enough to make a biker cry!!!
He really WAS an inmate in Folsom Prison when Johnny Cash did a live concert for the inmates.
My Daddy was a hard man. Except to his baby girl ...me😁😍🥰... he was in prison with Merle Haggard. San Quentin. Daddy loved his music. Because he knew he was the real deal. I grew up on Merle. And I'm grateful for it.

My favorite Merle Haggard song is "Silver Wings"
I was a fan of Merle's from the age of 3 because of the theme song of the TV show "Moving On" which he sang.

Good one! This song is one of my "go to" songs when I sing karaoke. The main go-to for me is "Streets of Bakersfield." Love that song. Keep it up sir.
Back in the day when this song came out the AM radio stations would not play a song much longer than this one .
Merle Haggard was in prison. I don't know what his sentence was or what the crime was for which he was convicted. He met Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash at one of their prison shows, I think it was San Quentin. He credited Johnny as the reason he turned his life around. Ur a solid guy! Thanks for being u, merry Christmas
Got love the working man." Okie from muskogie" and "the fightin side of me" are 2 other great ones from hag
A lot of older songs were under three min. Radio stations usually wouldn't play anything over a certain length.
He was in prison but not doing life without parole. He heard Johnny Cash perform.
Many of these older songs were written to go into a juke box venue as singles and were intentionally time limited.
Can't go wrong with the Legend. R.I.P Marle.
One of the songs I taught myself to play guitar by.I learned on several Merle songs and Loretta Lynn.
Miss Merle Haggard. You should play If We make it through December. A true story. It's the Christmas season. God Bless you and Merry Christmas.
LOL I was thinking of suggesting that song :0)
Merle really did turn 21 in prison for robbery and an escape attempt after that in san Quentin, later then-California governor Ronald Reagan granted Haggard a full and unconditional pardon for his past crimes.

I think you miss the point of this song. It is about how he takes responsibility for what he has done. He isn't blaming anybody but himself. He just realizes it too late.
That leaves me to blame cuz Mama Tried.
I would love your reaction to his song Mama's Hungry Eyes. It's a song he wrote that really happened.
He grew up in a train car made into a house that sat on a railroad track.
Most of Merle's song were written by him and it was about his life.
A lot of those old country songs are short. Maybe because it easier to get airplay?
He didn't get life without parole, but he was in San Quentin a few years. His Dad did die whule he was 6?? years old.
I saw him perform live 25 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday! Just don't ask me what I did yesterday... because I can't remember. Ha Ha

Nice to see you not just writing this song off as some country bumpkin tune. Props!
Merle Haggard has been a favorite of mine since the 60's (I was a teenager then). If you likes this one, try "Hungry Eyes". One of my favorites.
Back in the day all radio songs were limited to 3 minutes. The Disc Jokey and Comercials had to have their time also
Merles dad passed in real life when he was about 9 years old.
My uncle was a big fan of Merle Haggard. Looks like I missed the live feed.
Great a true song by a great classic country singer. He's in Heaven w ELVIS a George Jones a Johnny cash. a etc,,,,,all the good ones are gone.
You should check out the only hell my mama ever raised By the great Mr. Johnny paycheck
The Hag is a country legend. You should check out his sons sing. They sing good as well. Marty, Noel and Ben. I really like the way Ben sings.
Merlo haggard did live this. He was in sanquinton prison. He was a escape artist
Please let us know what your students thought of the song.
