Actually this song is at least somewhat autobiographical. Merle’s father died when he was 12 and he was constantly getting in trouble after that. He did turn 21 in prison. He pursued country music as a career after he was released from prison.

Johnny Cash did performances at prisons. Merle was one of the prisoners at the time and that experience changed his life.

Loved your reaction to this. I grew up, listening to Merle Haggard. My late father, God bless him, was a big fan. Our favorite song of Merle was “tonight the bottle let me down.” Give that one a try, my dear!

I love The Hag! All of his stuff his great & I think he did some of the best prison songs in music. Sing me back home, Branded Man, The Fugitive (or I’m a Lonesome Fugitive), Huntsville, I Wonder if They Ever Think of Me. He was in San Quentin in the ‘50s & saw Johnny Cash perform there. He was pardoned by Ronald Reagan in ‘72 (he was the governor of California at the time). I think you’d enjoy digging into his catalog in general, he made some great music over the years.

My brother bought a Merle Haggard CD box set one time. It is chocked full of great songs. I listen to them all the time. I highly recommend “I’m Bringing Home Good News” or “Living With the Shades Pulled Down”.

Merle is a great singer. I'll add my suggestions to more of his music. "Daddy Frank" and "I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink" they both give a different perspective on his music. So many great songs in his catalog. Yes the person in the song admits it was their decisions that led to the end result.

Watching all these reaction videos have made me realize how lucky I was growing up that I was introduced to so many types of music as a kid. My great grandma had me listening to things like B.B. King, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra, ect. My Dad had me listening to Z.Z. Top, Queen, AC/DC, ect. My mom had me listening to Randy Travis, Travis Tritt, Brooks and Dunn, ect., My cousins had me listening to Vanilla Ice, New Kids On The Block, Whitney Houston, ect. And once the 90's hit my friends in middle school had me listening to k-pop. 😆
Although my recommendation list on Amazon is a mess. I doubt Sammy Davis Jr., Halestorm, and Lonestar get recommended together very often. 😂

The scriptures teach that fathers should be involved in the raising of their children. There must be a reason for that which God knows and maybe we don’t. I submit that the Lord knows better than me.

Some women can do better than some men, but I'd never cut a loving dad out of the picture, just because there's a great mom.
