Why Is This Off-Grid Desert Homestead Abandoned?

There's mystery out in the California desert near the Arizona border. It was suggested I have a look at this place, as it was considered to be quite nice as desert dwellings go, and there was a ton of effort put into it: rock walls and foot paths, water and plumbing system, heating and cooking, and more. Maybe I could find clues to who once lived here and when, and try to decipher what happened to them. What clues did I find? I later learned the rest of the story.
