So familiar. Like many other countries. I'm from Australia. The same broad narrative. And it should not be seen as a bad thing. Basically, for most people, life is far more comfortable in cities and towns. The decline in the birth rate globally is an issue that is far more important.

As someone who grew up southwest Manitoba, I believe every town has a souris street because of the souris river. Souris itself is a small town in Manitoba a bit outside of Brandon MB. But the river itself travels down to the states through minot and back up near Regina sk.

Here in south west Manitoba we still have a ton of little towns with a good amount people still around with stores and gas stations still running from the 60s/70s. There’s still mainly small family farms and a lot, and I am a lot of wooden grain elevators, functional and none. My area is basically frozen in time from the 60s still. I love it. I’m still waiting for the day of the first evidence of change into the ghost towns of Saskatchewan though.

I did pilot training in Moose Jaw SK, and most of the town we're supposed to navigate to just... don't exist anymore!

The towns have done nothing to innovate or attract people. They appeal to an older crowd that gets smaller every year.

The picker in me was watching this going OHhhhh I'd grab this or that ... but once you said it made eastern Montana look busy I was impressed scared lol😅😅😅 driving the flats northern Montana heading east makes your brain fall into a near coma level which is oddly uncomfortable. I drove through in the Winter of 2023, stopped by Bladworth, which is supposedly the first place that "Tin Lid Golf" or "Disc Golf" was invented. Like all these places, there was an old Grain Elevator, A few houses, and a stone carin. It's a beautiful place, but I can see how "Prairie Madness" existed before the time when you could easily escape to the mountains.

Be careful with deer mice as they carry hanta virus which is 50% fatal. Mice droppings, urine and saliva and carry virus weeks later. Symptoms resemble flu with large muscle group pain followed by respiratory issues. Can incubate for a month with no major symptoms then your are ill.... test takes a while to come back.

well there is only 3 towns in Canada Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal Canada is only 1 state compared to USA 100 years from now i doubt Canada will exist, how do you complete with 50 other states working against you?

I grew up in Esterhazy in the early 2000’s and had family all over the southern prairies, mainly in Estevan and Pangman. It’s sad to see the decline of these old towns I frequented for hockey games, family trips and drive ins. My family in Esterhazy are becoming victims of the potash mines closing up and poisoning the watershed. When big farming and mining corporations come then go, decline in the local community follows. I’ll never forget those crisp prairie mornings or incredible storm displays even as I’m out here on Vancouver Island.

Great video! Makes me want to drive highway 18 and experience everything you did. I’m from Vancouver so I never got to experience small town Canadian lifestyle. Now that I’m almost 70, I like the idea of quiet, no hustle and bustle lifestyle. And solo travel is the best.

Those horses are absolutely stunning!! My own horse could be related...she was born in Saskatchewan and was a black and white paint. I have traveled through the province many times during many moves across this vast country but never as far south as this. There is an eerie yet alluring beauty to it all.....gotta love those old trucks!!

Why are these towns dying? One reason is that a large number of SK's population has moved to Alberta since the founding of both provinces in 1905. I remember asking my dad one time if there were also a lot of SK people in Calgary when he moved there from B.C. in 1950 and he told me that about half the licence plates were from SK. Nowadays a lot of SK people drive to Calgary for shopping on a weekend, but I'm sure that back then those were folks looking for better opportunities in Alberta, something that still happens in large numbers today.

Saskatchewan seems neglected in general. Ive now seen both Sask and Mexico and Mexico looked more prosperous. Nobody ever talks about it though just how much of "Canada" can outdo the third world for visible poverty. The people in Sask are very very nice way happier people than Albertans who supposedly have it all with endless oil wealth. If tax money is going to be taken from me and not spent in my local area in the name of "aid" id much rather have it go to Saskatchewan than Quebec, Israel or Ukraine.

You know most people have never had real maple syrup. I had always gotten you know the typical store- bought kind. The stuff you get is mostly sugar and artificial flavoring, fake if you will. To eat a good pancake with real maple syrup is like a piece of haven. All this is a metaphor for the lovely lady Layton she is real maple syrup of the sweetest kind. thank you Rockhopper

My mom was born in rabbit lake. I watched this whole province of small towns die on The Vines through the 70s 80s and 90s. Great big Mega Farm Corp takeover everything and just spit us back the overpriced green that this whole country worked hard to build up into something worth having
