    The part that always scared me was the cost of materials and not knowing if I would screw it up in the process or lose motivation and the materials/cost of mats be wasted. :(

    • @Dea_Ex_Machina
      @Dea_Ex_Machina 3 года назад +60

      It’s more of a process than a one and done, IMO. When I started cosplay I used the cheapest materials and I’d slowly replace parts of the costume over the years as my budget and skills grew. My sesshomau “tail” was 6 white feather boas tied together and my armor was duct tape and cardboard for my first con, but by the following con I upgraded to fur & foam! Step by manageable step!

    • @superturtle64
      @superturtle64 3 года назад +40

      This might not be what you want to hear but bear with me; in the process of learning and honing your techniques, you are gonna end up wasting materials, but if you tell yourself "if I mess this up and it really can't be salvaged, I can just buy more materials", and telling yourself that will make you feel so much better about everything, and you'll have so much more fun with cosplay.
      So, if anything, the more valuable thing you'd be losing over a mistake or two would be the time invested, so be sure to give yourself plenty of crafting time before a convention to allow time for mistakes.

    For tools I’d absolutely also recommend newbies to get the cheapest tools to begin with. Stuff you use more often can be invested in but there’s no reason to buy the most expensive sewing machine if all you need is 2-3 different stitches

    • @sunnydoom2726

    If I can add one tip:
    Ask people you admire, particularly people like Svetlana, Benny, Bill and Britt (Punished Props), or wherever you see that made something cool. Most cosplayers would love to tell you exactly what they used, where they got it, and how they put it together. I originally thought it would be rude to do so, but I've found that's quite the opposite and asking those questions can really help you out and give you lots of motivation!

    My 14 year old niece is going to her first con in two weeks. Shes so excited and nervous and its so amazing. She's making an anime costume but altering some simple pieces from Amazon for cheap. She is also making a foam hammer. Since I will be helping her with her costume and I'm older, I'm doing "Mother" from Neverland, which is just a simple black dress with an apron. There are so many cosplays that you can do with clothing you already own like "L" from Deathnote or Where's Waldo. After you do it once, you'll want to do it again. And don't forget that you can make a costume by using fusing tape, fabric glue, or glue gun if you dont sew.

    My very 1st costume (a suit of ODST armor made of EVA Foam), was made with A sharp kitchen knife, box blade, a heat gun, a hot glue gun, Foam Mats twice the needed thickness, and the blue print. I worked on it for 27 hours straight and wore it immediately afterwards to school.
    It was Halloween, and I passed out after returning home.

    tbh, I love the energy you have around cosplaying and encouraging new people to cosplay. I used to cosplay way back when I was in HS/Early college, but I fell out of it because of the cost but also because I just didn't feel like I was somehow good enough to cosplay. In the process of making another costume after years of not for a convention next week (still got a ways to go and extremely novice at creating my costumes/props). I think having fun is the basis of every hobby. When I started my dubbing classes, I was suffering a lot because I did all wrong, my teacher said "just have fun, in French the word "jouer" is the same for "actuar" and "jugar", so "nous jouons" " (in English is the same as French, in Spanish we have different words for play with toys as a child, jugar, and play in a theater, actuar, my teacher words were like a revelation). I started getting better when I started enjoying what I was doing and having fun making mistakes and experimenting with my voice, I'm actually quite good in acting stuff (I need some technical stuff to level up, but it's only time in class). I'm sure cosplay is the same, just craft something because you like it, not because you have to do it or because your friends do it.

    Another tip when making your cosplays: Trust the process. It won’t be smooth sailing all the way and you will get frustrated at your projects, but don’t give up. I myself am not very good at sewing but over the years I’ve sewn quite a lot of cosplays and I’ve been very happy with the results. I’ve learned through trial and error and even when something feels too difficult or annoying, just take a deep breath and keep trying. You can always fix your costumes if at first you’re not happy with the result. You can learn from it and before long you’ll be a lot more knowledgeable.

    I made Celty from Durarara for my first cosplay because 1. Had a leather jacket for bike riding, 2. Had a motorcycle helmet lying around, 3. Her real face looked like mine! And it was an easy start. Then I went too big with too little knowledge and being too scared of foam and made an entire Space Marine from pepakura... Then I did and am busy with Solaire from Dark Souls. I finished a really basic version (cardboard, papermache, spray paint, old bedsheets, one piece of felt) and now decided to try foam and it's been a blast! I wasn't afraid to scrap mistakes because I wanted it to look good to me, not trying to be perfect. Now I'm on the priming step for most of my foam parts! It was very satisfying seeing people say praise the sun seeing me ❤️

    My tip would be that, its fine if you feel like its taking too long to finish your cosplay. it means youre putting more time into making it closest to what you desire it to look like :)

    I know the work of Kinpatsu. She is awesome.
    And I probably should look into Bill Doran's guides. Foam is something I wanna learn to work with.

      Neither am I, but I get a lot of satisfaction making something cool out of nothing.

    I suppose I started Cosplay in 2010 but those were bought ones for San Diego Comic-Con. I got thrown into the lions den at 12 years old with SDCC being my first Con ever, because I used to live in San Diego so all my family is there and my cousin got in free for years via a professional badge. I made my first costume in 2012 ( the 11th Doctor from Dr Who). Since then I have done 2 cosplays, that latest one ending me doing cosplays for awhile. It was in 2017 and the Con was so bad and I judged how I looked in my costume and lost all confidence and lost the love for Cosplay. So for 5 years I have went to Cons in normal clothes. Now my wife wants to get into cosplay, and im nervous as hell but excited as well because I hope to turn my thinking around about it. I got so many purists knocking things down on social media that I became a perfectionist in my head myself, but only for me. Whenever thinking about cosplay I always think I need to be the exact height, weight, and build of the character but dont hold others to the same standards. Hoping to end that thinking soon, and thank you for the tips. I am gonna get started on some of these.

    My first piece will be Judge Dread. That big eagle shoulder pad, badge and helmet. I have lots of experience with sculpting and molds. I have to do this.

    5:53 I wish someone told me that back in 2017! I was new to the idea and jumped straight into a complicated costume like Tekkaman Blade II. Made it all out of foam, but the problem was that I could not get it ready for the next convention. So it's in a land fill somewhere for the next 200 years.

    I’m gonna go to my first convention soon and I REALLY wanna be a Jedi, but it’s intimidating even though I love it so much. (I’m not very good at seeing) So for right now, I have Ranboo cosplay that I’ve already done already, but my goal is to work up to making a Jedi costume.
